Episode 1 in a series focusing on the jazz blues, bebop standard; Billies Bounce - by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.
In this first part we learn the changes, starting off with a basic blues and learning how to add substitutions and extra chords to make it a fully fledged “jazz blues”!
I would highly recommend downloading the lesson materials provided at the link above.. all of the topics covered in this lesson are typed up nice and neat and provided in both guitar pro and PDF formats. Having these to hand whilst following along with the video will certainly make things much easier to absorb.

Fantastic! Clear instructions, always with a practical musical basis. No slouch at performance either. Thanks Alex!

Thank you Alex. Great playing and loads of wee take aways from the lesson. "What no Louis ?" Every great channel needs a comedy element, shame cats only misbehave when it suits them 😁 😸

Thank you so much for this. I'm trying to transcribe George Benson's solo from his version but I was honestly just having a hard time keeping up with the form, which was sort of frustrating because, as a blues in F, it should be straightforward. The various stops and starts in thr head, however, were *really* throwing me off and i just couldnt find my footing. This helped so much

Great Jazz Blues 101 elaboration. Lessons are clear and concise, I particularly like your right hand technique and will be referring my students to watch your video.
Good luck and keep up the great work.

Thanks so much for this! Despite being an absolutely massive Bird fan, I'm also a lazy guitar playing bastard, and don't play through his stuff as much as I should. I forget how refreshing it can be to play his sax lines on the guitar. The way the notes fall on the fretboard forces me to think like a horn player, i.e. triads, extensions & passing tones, etc...and really makes me step away from the usual guitar-y stuff that I typically fall back on. Great lesson! Thank you!

Absolutely spot on mate!.. working on his lines breaks you out of all the guitaristic shapes we know so well and forces us to see the bigger picture. Always an eye opener! 👌🏻

Finger gymnastics , great breakdown, if only I didn’t leave guitar out of my life for 15 years.
Going like the energiser bunny now.
All fingers hitting the right fret at the right time cleanly, pleasure to watch.

Thank you from the Netherlands! It us not immediately obvious to me how the replacement chords work harmonically although my ear tells me that they do...
