They showed years of "dedication" to him too, providing the seat they promised him. It's been a mutually beneficial relationship to both, but clearly Russell hasn't lived up to being what they expected as a valid replacement for Hamilton, and I'd be surprised if they felt he was. So far he has never won a race without strange circumstances concerning faster cars than him crashing out. He's barely able to beat a past-his-prime Hamilton under the best of circumstances and is certainly no Verstappen-killer. I can completely see why Mercedes wouldn't be enthusiastic in keeping him, but he's lived up to exactly what I thought he was before he ever got there.

Honestly if I were Russell I would've started thinking about other teams as soon as Verstappens name came out of Toto's mouth at the start of the season. Bro is a genuine reincarnation of Charles Leclerc, but from Britain (think about it they've got SO much in common it's ridiculous) and all of that just to be talked about like he's somehow a stand-in for Max and a still unproven talent

@@Ixxlostinabox very well. This is gonna be a LONG read btw. Both drivers won the F3/GP3 titles as a rookie, went into F2, won that title as a rookie as well. Both drivers went into F1 and joined a backmarker/low midfield team for their rookie year.
In their rookie year, both drivers absolutely demolished their much more experienced teammates, looking extremely impressive in the process. In their 2nd/3rd season in Formula 1, both drivers began to establish reputations as qualifying masters for their blistering one-lap pace, consistently putting their cars where they didn't really belong.
Both drivers were moved up to the works team of their respective driver academies, and in their debut season, they both beat their multiple time WDC teammates. Both drivers have only been outscored by a teammate once in their careers (I'm not counting Kubica we all know that was a fluke), and both drivers are considered future WDCs who haven't quite had the opportunity to fight for one yet.
Even the small things, such as both of them putting together spectacular performances every once in a while, but also having high profile errors every once in a while too, and both drivers sometimes being hotheaded on track just makes it even more insane. Their careers are virtually identical, with the biggest difference being that Leclerc didn't spend as much time at Sauber as George did with Williams. And Mercedes, and specifically Toto, have admitted that George's 3rd year was unnecessary.
It's almost scary how similar those two are....

drivers aren't really that important. they are all in the top 99.5 % of skill at this level. Engineers decide which driver wins titles. That's the simplest F1 explanation you'll ever get.
So when "... given a bit more thought and considering" you should take into account this fact. And really not care a single jot which driver is going where cos it don't bloody matter. Norris is a perfect example. His engineers have engineered their way into a race winning package. he didn't suddenly get 10% better... nope! the bloody engineers made the car better. simple as that. This has more legs than Verstappen to Mercedes and plays into Redbull's hands. Verstappen has a contract until 2028 and would likely need certain levers activated to manufacture an exit.
Russell at the end of the day needs a contract after 2025. He has to look across the paddock and see nothing is guaranteed (ala Sainz) and that Mercedes has openly flirted with Verstappen. It's in his interest to use RB to force Mercedes to give him a new deal past 2025 or guarantee himself a seat at RB in 2026 as we all know Perez is not coming back.

honestly it doesnt look that alarming. at least in terms of the narrative that theres unrest brewing within the team because a few people have left. but if we just look at the last 2 major people leaving, they left for promotions. Wheately was sporting director but left to become a team principal at Audi. Courtenay, the head strategist left to become the sporting director at mclaren. Both are promotions to higher positions. It be more concerning if it were people leaving for the same job or other lateral move. James V left merc as head strat to be team principal at williams and no one was saying mercedes was imploding..
As for Newey, honestly I think he just wanted to retire. He had expressed disinterest in new regs and he has a long successful career. Him going to Aston Martin shortly after has less to do with him jumping ship than Lawrence Stroll pouncing immediately on the opportunity and giving him an incredible offer. Newey basically owns a few percent of a billion dollar enterprise that will continue to increase in value. Also, he said he always wanted to work with Fernando Alonso.

rid themselves of. If he’d have stepped down after his mucky picture and young girl dallying episode
he’d have kept a few high profile employees longer. But his arrogance and lack of self control will always
be his Achilles heal. Red Bull under Horner will always be the Lord Hesketh and James Hunt team of

His number one choice would probably be Aston Martin, I think that is also Max's number 1 choice. That is the only reason I could give as to why Max hasn't left redbull yet. He clearly hasn't got any faith in redbull giving him a good car in 2026 and right now Aston is still sh*t, that's why he's waiting.

    • @randomchicken0490
      @randomchicken0490 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

@bniceuk8207 I mean it's quite difficult to be a superstar to sponsors if you don't have a car that brings you the attention 😅. The Williams situation was a bit different, Williams was a team that was on the brink of bankruptcy, which is not a normal situation for a team, especially not nowadays when every team is profitable. Attracting sponsors as a rookie is difficult, especially when there were two other British drivers on the grid (2.5 if you include Albon), one being a 5-time world champion at the height of his career and the other being one that had already built up a strong social media following from streaming.
What makes you think that Russell is unpopular with Mercedes sponsors? I think George fits the mold for Mercedes's brand identity of luxury and class better than Max does. Even though Max is more popular, stuff like that matters. Mercedes would employ Max for his driver skills, not his attractiveness to sponsors. Which I think is unnecessary, I personally think that Russell has what it takes to be a world champion and Mercedes does not really "need" Max, of course, he is the best driver on the grid and it would be a great thing for Mercedes to have him, but it isn't necessary and it shouldn't be to the detriment of Russell.
That "mold" that Russell has also fits well with Aston's brand identity. I Honestly think that George would be more popular with sponsors than Fernando is, Fernando is at the end of his career, he is yesterday's news. Aston signing Russell would make them seem like a more serious team that is truly trying to fight for championships in the future (especially if they fired Lance, which will never happen), Aston putting all their eggs in one basket trusting that Fernando at the age of 45 will still be good enough to win championships and keeping Lance does not make them look like a serious team, regardless of them having Newey and Honda. That should make Russell more attractive to sponsors imo.
I expect Russell's popularity to increase during the coming years when Brits realize that Russell is the best chance they have at having a British world champion in the coming years. This year it has been clear that Lando isn't up for it, he doesn't have the mentality for it, which is a shame, he has the skill and talent for it, no doubt, but the mentality isn't there. He wasn't willing to sacrifice his relationship with Max earlier in the season, which means he probably never will. Things like these matter, it is often required for you to be a world champion. Hopefully, he can develop that mentality, but I doubt it. Your personality is pretty set after the age of 25 when your frontal lobe is fully developed and he turns 25 in November.

Russell is a fast qualifier who has been disappointing when it comes to races. Many of his podiums and both of his wins were inherited from Max Verstappen errors. He's bold on strategy to his detriment just as much as his benefit. It would be a huge step down for Red Bull to go after him.

I'd argue George can beat Max over a lap - the amount of times he's pulled out a worldie lap at Merc already has been very impressive.
If I had to pick any driver on the grid to do a quali lap ... it would be 1) Charles 2) George 3) Max
Those three can just pull a lap from nowhere!
But Max is more of a complete driver - which you are always going to get from an extra 3 & 4 years of experience and having an entire team / car built around you.

Russell won't be in Mercedes in '26. Even he knows it.
Toto wants to boost Russell's confidence in hopes he'll reach his full potential next year when he's being challenged by Kimi. But Toto knows its a long shot and unlikely to turn out that way. It's a head to head between Russell and Kimi next year to partner Max in '26. Except, next year, Kimi won't be getting hobbled by the team to make Russell feel good. They all know Russell will fail.

Russell would be a perfect fit at Red Bull, because they need someone who's a good driver, but not so good that they're a threat to Max, Russell ticks that box. If I was Russell, I would just stay at Mercedes, because if he moves to Red Bull and has a couple of bad seasons they will just ditch him for another driver, that could be the end of his career. That's the big downside of driving for Red Bull, they aren't affraid to f**k someone off if they're not performing well.
