Hi guys, there's been a lot of comments about climbing gear on this one so we thought we'd answer all in one comment! As some of you may know, we have a full set of both climbing and arborist rope kit back at the centre but, when we were called to this rescue, we were told that the branch was easily within reach of a ladder and did not bring it with us. With time being a major factor in how badly the animal is hurt in cases like this, we decided that the time needed to collect the kit was too much of a risk. Lawrie is a very experienced climbing instructor and knows what he can do safely. Don't worry. We now have a small rope set in the car for such a scenario next time :)
It's easy to underestimate the height of a branch imo. It happened to me before too when I was maybe 14 or 15. My cat was sitting in a tree and I thought he could be easily grabbed by my dad, but in the end we needed a ladder because it was much higher than what I remembered.
Lawrie, my nerves are shot watching you on that high branch! Fantastic job! The way you just casually sat up there inspecting that bird's injury, removing fishing line and giving commentary as if you were safely on the ground!
What a wonderful man going up that tree and risking his life for that bird. Very brave indeed. Not everyone would be able to do that with such confidence.
Really really nicely done. Very lucky that the jay was fit for release. A real testament to Lawrie's no nonsense bravery and the kindness and vigilance of the ladies. Nice job!
4.21: "DON'T LISTEN TO HIM!!" and a few frames later... "PLEASE don't drop me!!!" 4.27: "Don't do it - I beg you" - Poor jay; They picked the best time to start squawking again!
Lawrie is quickly becoming the Jim Fowler of Wildlife Aid...fantastic job young man...you bring an outstanding "can do," positive attitude to your job...something you definitely learned from Simon . It's a joy to watch the both of you. Thank you...
I think the people who down voted this video are fishermen who have had their line caught up in a tree before. Kudos to all involved in rescuing this lovely bird 👍
Just a little tip from my own experience at a wildlife rescue centres. With Jays (and magpies and jackdaws) if they are snipping at your fingers while examining them, put a small stick in their beak. They will usually hold on and bite the stick for a bit in stead of biting your fingers. Also helps them calm down a bit.
My little parrots don't usually react to things I am watching, but they did NOT like that jay screaming, even tho it is a totally different bird from a totally different country they still understood it's distress calls
Sure, I watched Laurie with my heart in my throat. But what a great catch Simon did! And let us not forget the brave ladies holding the ladder with great skill and dedication. Great job, everybody!
Oh, I remember this noise ... these birds can be *very* loud. A few months ago I woke up early because a Jay was crying extremley loud outside. He got somehow trapped with one wing in our garden bench, while he was attacked by another bird (didn't see that one, probably a pidgeon or a magpie?). One side of his face was a little bit injured from the attack, but after I held him for a while, trying to calm him down (which actually worked somehow) he flew away - kinda hobbling in the air - and rested in a tree for while. I hope he's fine now. :)
I've seen Lawrie get in a ton of nasty predicaments but this may be the first time I've seen him perform a Cirque du Soleil balancing beam act on his bum in such a brittle tree. Still, you guys are troopers. You'd never stop trying to help and I love that.!♥️♥️♥️
I didn't think Lawrie going up a tree would ever make me nervous after he went up like 50ft at night in the rain after a swan, but this tree was really nerve-wracking! It kept breaking apart in his hands and I was screaming on the inside!
Well done those who called WAF, terrific team work Simon and Laurie... Re those who go fishing and leave such a lethal legacy ..all I can say is no way can I type my thoughts..Who ever has made complaints about climbing gear please ..save such for the fishing freaks who seem to enjoy making a great mess ...which no human could ignore . 👍👍👍👍👍 Well done Simon & Laurie
I was so scared that branch was going to break. Thank you so much for saving all these little ones, I wish there were more people like you out there! Lawrie has such a optimistic and brave attitude all the time. Great work!!
Respect for helping the poor Jay out. You are risking your life if that branch had snapped. Fishing line is such a menace to other wildlife. Years ago it used to be lead weights, but nowadays fishermen are supposed to use non toxic weights... 😊👍👍
Very well done!!! I take you have no fear of heights, as I just watching you was getting weak in the knees. Beautiful bird ... dam plastics, it’s everywhere. Thank you!!
That poor little jay was ready to beat you to a pulp, Lawrie. You're lucky you didn't catch it on a good day or you'd get the ol' one-two by the sound of it! :D
Good job Lawrie! He's such a pro, even kept narrating for a video throughout it in the most hilarious dead pan british way possible. Takes nerves of steel that. Glad he didn't go splat against the pavement, he's a gem. Can we also appreciate how that Jay totally showed off by flying through the rungs of the latter.XD
Hi guys. Just found you a couple of weeks ago . And like every one else enjoining every minute. And going back to watch al your videos . Thanks greetings from trucker AL RETIRED . CANADA .
Fabulous rescue Lawrie you are a brave man to climb so high! but what a beautiful Jay, bet he/she was pleased you came to the rescue it would have been a terrible way to die left dangling like the hanged man. x
Oh Lawrie that was a scary rescue seeing you so far from the ladder on that branch. But great rescue as always! Glad you made it safely back down on the ground 😊
I know these birds, there is one who likes to yell occasionally at my window every Tuesday. Wasn't here last Tuesday so I am scared but also thankful. edit: An I am trying to fix my grammar XD
Me gusta que Wildlife Aid dedique el mismo cuidado a los pequeños animales o a los mamíferos mayores, sean un arrendajo, una paloma, un zorro o un tejón. Incluso a una rata.
I didn't realise how far down the branch he went. I could never do that! Mind, I'm more Simon's age. lol Well done. Love Jay's. Get a few visiting my garden every now and then. Very shy birds, but loud [lol] birds.
Nice job, and what a beautiful Corvid, albeit a rather unappreciative one! By the way, the better-run angling societies require that members report the location of line breakages and fishing line entanglements/snags to the society, so that the line and tackle can be retrieved and disposed of in a safe way (the best way of disposing of nylon fishing line is to cut it up into ~1 inch lengths using a pair of scissors. That way, it no longer represents a strangulation or ensnarement risk to wildlife and pets).
Simon / Lawrie, I love when you kind of make these humorous. I particularly was amused at the previously screaming bird going instantly silent upon being dropped and letting out a huge Squawwwkkkk upon being caught. I found that funny. I was very happy you two were able to let him go. Simon may have missed the release, but he did catch the bird! :)

Glad to hear, gotta admit the shots of him far out on the branch were quite harrowing to see.
Maybe also a carabina for Lawie to attach the bag to a belt loop?

'If you're seeing this video, I possibly didn't die', well done Lawrie for getting that job done and stay safe
"If you're seeing this I didn't die." Mmm, it's depends how shameless Simon is for self promotion.... 😂😂😂
Laughed out loud!
I noticed he actually said 'I probably didn't die'. He had doubts I guess!
I was about to say that would be unfortunate last words to be played out in a police investigation investigation!
Lawrie is such a sweetheart.. He is the one risking a very bad fall, and all he cares about is if he hits someone with a stick :)
Thank you for your kind words :)
Right, I was thinking that too! Cheers, hope your weekend is swell 💞
...and trusting the integrity of some branches more than other experienced climbers might...
Lawrie is so unbelievably charming even in these stressful situations, and he seems so genuine about it. What a lucky find he was for this team!
Haha thank you very much!
Lawrie is a gem.
Absolutely! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
2:10 Lawrie is looking and talking so leisurely, but my heart is pounding so hard. LOL
That footage made me a little bit nauseous actually. XD
Haha same! xD And his "If you see this video I probably didnt die" when he begins to climb down....
Same thing!!!🤢
Ours too!
Well done Lawrie that was very brave of you and thank you for saving his life.

@@bennydreieiei1014 he’s a professional climbing instructor so not stupid. Still took selfless courage though.
"Just drop him Lawrie and I'll catch it"

Lawry, my heart is in my mouth watching you up there ...

4:13 rofl I love how the Jay appears to have understood the proposition of getting dropped down in a bag and decided to voice their objection =D
"I am going to drop it dont you miss" *bird starts screaming again like it understood that
Lawrie is an absolute treasure!
4:39 that lil bird squawk when he falls omggg 😭
"You might get him biting my hand if you're lucky"
Lawrie gets more like Simon everyday, and I am so here for it :D
Climbing down is much more difficult. Thankyou for the rescue.

Lawrie really went out on a limb in this episode!
Admirable the courage of Lawrie 🏆I wish you a prosperous life because people like you are worth gold 🏅 thanks for all you do for animals ❤🙏🍀
Good Lord, fishing line up a tree. My dad always made sure we brought any “spaghetti bowls” back for correct disposal in the trash, on land.
Fishing is not only harmful for fishes, but also for birds, mammals and the environment !
Such undying gratitude
that jay was lucky to get help ♥
He was indeed, it was very lucky that the two lovely ladies had heard him flapping above

Such an amazing job! It's nice to see that Lawrie didn't die and that he didn't have an embarrassing short fall from halfway down the ladder!
2:27 "Nice throw!"
See, the duckling throwing has paid off.
That put a smile on my face too.
Be cautious Lawrie.
Excellent rescue and a favourable result
