Thank you so much! The 5-second hold closed it, but would not let me open it again. Pulling the fuse finally did the trick. I just bought a used 2019 Ascent and was so excited. Then 5 days later, issues with the tailgate. I wanted to cry!
I'm so very thankful that I found this video. Our hatch would not open and the instructions in the book didn't work to manually move the lever. Thanks again.
Thank you! The 5 second hold of the rear gate button did the trick. This also fixed the incessant beeping while driving. This is not in the owners manual and if it’s in forums, it’s buried. Great work figuring this out!!
That's what's happening to me too on Outback 2019 although I am not a younger person therefore can't do as much as was done in this video but your comment on the incessant beeping drew my attention as that's happening to me too and I was sure it was coming from the hatch. Sadly, I have no choice but to take this into my dealer!
Same here, 2020 Ascent. Battery low, won’t start, didn’t drive it for a while. Charged battery 30 mins, it started no problem. Only issue was the back hatch. This worked wonders! Thanks!
You are a lifesaver! Turns out there was a small stick that got stuck in the mechanism the last time it was closed. Clearly some electronic thing was not happy about this and pulling power, because this somehow managed to kill the battery. Got it jumped no sweat, but the hatch would not open (just beeped) and the little manual opening lever wouldn't work either. The stick must have had it under some weird tension. But holding the button for five seconds did the trick! It made an angry sound, and then popped open. Works just fine now (without the ******* stick!). Thanks. You saved us a trip to the dealership :)
Like everyone else . . . the 5 second override. I had a back pack strap stuck that was preventing the door from opening. I was fiddling with the mechanism from the inside and that didn't work. I did you TH-cam search, found this, and thank Christ, problem solved. Now, I'll be able to sleep tonight with this fixed.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!! Just drove home last night and today my daughter to school!! Could not get it to click shut- 1st step you mentioned did the trick 🙂
Thank you!! Super helpful for Subaru Ascent that was incessantly beeping while driving and rear gate would not open, but only give 3 beeps. Pulling and reinserting fuse 14 fixed things.
Great fix. Tried the 5 sec hold but did not work. Incessant beeping while driving fixed by unplugging the connector under the hatch panel. Reattached the plug remove 10A fuse 14 for about 10 secs. Solved!!!! Thanks so much Ron Australia
THANK YOU!!! Had the tailgate shut on a towel and got jammed up pretty good. Your video enable me to manually open the tailgate, but could get it to latch properly... came back and watched the rest on pulling the fuse for the reset!!! LOL!!!! THANKS AGAIN!!! ALL FIXED!!!!
Thank you! The 5 second hold did not work but pulling the 3rd fuse from the top (The top 10A fuse) on the right DID resolve the hatch not working. A great help!
Thank you so much! I had so so much trouble opening my trunk after the battery went flat even after recharging. 5. Second hold to reset was a lifesaver!
This just saved my whole ass! My hatch got stuck shut AGAIN with the siren blaring inside, and it’s Sunday so my dealer is closed. I have read disconnecting the battery isn’t a good idea for cars that are mostly run by computers, but that’s what worked the first time. I was just about to try that myself when I found your tip about the 14th fuse and it worked instantly. Thank you so much!!
Hello , Thanks for your video. Pulling that #14 fuse worked on my friends 2019 ASCENT. Man that hatch not closing sure messed up a good half an hour ! Thanks Again for posting
Thank you so so so much for the fuse hint!! We took or vehicle across the border and the lift gate did all these things. Pulling the fuse was the last option, and it worked!
Thanks for this... I didn't know it would reset just by holding the button. we accidentally left the tailgate open and it killed the battery overnight. I was surprised this killed the battery though considering nothing else was on.
Thank you so much, I’ve finally got it open using the hold for 5 secs. Now it will only open a third of the way...more learning to do. I’m really thankful for this though.
Typically that would mean you have the "memory" button pressed. Up on the front dash there's an open button and a memory button. Try pressing the memory button to release it from memory mode and see if that fixes it.
None of your awesome tips has opened the hatch. I have an old 2008 Subaru forester and I will probably need to take it to the Dealership, thanks for sharing.
Tried this fuse trick on a 2018 Subaru Forester XT, didn't work. Also tried holding the rear hatch button down, no luck. Tried several different fuses in the panel after looking at the chart in the manual trying to identify which circuit controls the rear hatch, no luck. Had to disconnect both leads on the battery for a couple minutes (I did NOT touch the disconnected battery terminals together), and after reconnecting my rear hatch worked fine after that. If anyone knows the correct number fuse for my car, please post.

Thank you!! Popping the fuse out for a few seconds and putting it back totally worked. Saved me a trip to the dealership.
A million thanks for posting this!!!!!! That 5-second override function was a savior!!!

-20° in a Costco parking lot and it wouldn't latch. You sure saved my bacon!
Thanks for posting how to get the hatch open. The 5 second hold worked for me!
Thank you so much! That 5 second hold was a life saver for us.

Thank you. Hatch was stuck open in the White Mountains in 9 degree weather. This solution helped in a stressful situation.

Thank you so much. You’re solution fixed the problem. Well done.
pulling the fuse worked for me. thanks!
To get that # 14 fuse out I had to bend in the tip of my needle nose plyers . So I could get it to catch that slippery fuse
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO! YOU ARE A LIFE SAIVER
Thank you so much for this! Just saved my day!

Thank you for the 5 second trick!
It also occurred to my 2019 Subaru Forester. The 5 second reset works for me. Thanks!
Hi. What did you do? Where did you press?
Thanks for this... I didn't know it would reset just by holding the button. we accidentally left the tailgate open and it killed the battery overnight. I was surprised this killed the battery though considering nothing else was on.

Thank you sir, I try your trick with the fuse and that debug my latching problem, and the gate work again!!!!!
This was so amazingly helpful! Thank you!
