Sad that most of the KCS SD40s were retired, but it’s nice to see how these machines helped KCS through the 70s and 90s.

I remember when the SD40s arrived on the Midsouth lines in the mid 90s. The only track they were allowed on was the mainline between Bossier City & Meridian. Any other track, at that time, was almost a guaranteed derailment waiting to happen.
My favorite was #652. The horn on it was deep toned, which made it perfect for setting a very lonely mood when coming through town at night. Now it's a remote control unit stuck working Deramus Yard.

Great Presentation Brother and the SD-40-2s were only geared for 55 MPH. So the now high speed Z Trains these would no longer be of good use, considering most of the KCS was a 40 MPH railroad with some 59 MPH trackage in the Shreveport to Greenville run.
    Food for thought 🤔😊🙏🇺🇸

Great video Bishop! That SD40 history does make me remember the good times the railroad had back then.

Great video and tutorial abt how the SD40's became such an important part of railroading for KCS! Big fan of the SD40's just like the MP15AC's. They're the main locomotive types used on our Local Short Line here with Delmarva Central Railroad. Thanks again Bishop for sharing another great video with us along with your PRICELESS time and effort! Cheers from Laurel, Delaware USA.

Great video! You touched on the SD40X near the end, does that mean we’ll get an SD50 video? I would be very interested in one especially if it talked about the interesting light packages on them.

You are correct! The "snoot" did hold extra radio equipment. It was for controlling un-maned DPU's. A new concept back then. When you do your SD50/60 video? It's would be good to note that the KCS stuck with the SD50 and worked with EMD to work out the many problems that pledged it. Most other roads wrote off the SD50 and parked them in the dead line. This is one big reason the SD60 was a success.

Right, the equipment was called "Locotrol", and each Locotrol locomotive could only be the lead locomotive or the remote locomotive. They were not interchangeable, unlike the modern locomotives equipped for Distributed Power (DPU).

The Bicentennial was painted after a KCS Officials daughter created the scheme for a school project. From what I understand, KCS didnt like the design but they were over ruled by the higher up.

I heard that various “kiddie designs” were submitted to the Kansas City Art Institute- they are the one that made the suggestion. At that time, KCS was calling itself “The Uncommon Carrier” - maybe that had something to do with the choice….

The US also has a disposable culture. Throw out stuff that works to get something new. Meanwhile European railways keep their locomotives longer

    great video man!
i got a bit of a weird unrelated question
out of curiosity based off of past videos from you, have you by chance railfanned the UP Monroe sub in between Columbia and Monroe near Hebert on 165? I used to live around that area and I would love to see if someone has video clips from there

    • @LouisianaRailProductions
      @LouisianaRailProductions  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I’ve been in the area, but I never really ventured down there for railfanning. I usually stuck with the UP north of Monroe, when I was still living in Ruston.

@@LouisianaRailProductions ah fair enough lol, last train I saw there is one I wont be able to forget.
All NS power with an EX-CR 60I on the headend and a C40-9 trailing, crispy RS3L on the 60I too.

Idk if you online but could you tell me an area in bossier Shreveport where lots of trains come through a day and I need to know asap because I’m going train spotting this afternoon thanks

Wilson’s alley and Jordan street have the most traffic I’d say. You have traffic from both CPKC and the KCS. Just kinda keep your head on a swivel for homeless. I’ve never had any issues, but this is Shreveport we’re talking about haha!
