  • Hey there, everyone!
    I've recently been getting a lot of questions on how to write, copy and exchange patches within the Boss GT-1.
    In this tutorial I will take you through the different options; Write, Copy and Exchange. You will be able to store your favorite patches where you like, and have them in any particular order.
    Let me know if you have any questions regarding this topic, and I'll see what I can do.
    Requests and comments are more than welcome, so just fire away.
    Thanks for watching, and thanks for the great support and comments I get everyday - it means a lot to me, and I'm always ready to help :-)
    See you all soon!
    Have a great day
    Cheers.

    Silly question but i just got my gt-1 (you and your videos were a great help to select it, thank you!!!) and i haven't yet really fiddle with it.
    I understand that it is not possible to "assign" to CTL a complete different patch (already existing in the bank). If i wanted to do that i understand i should replicate the complete patch via the 1-6 Assign buttons (re-create the patch every time).

    • @GuitarNTabs
      @GuitarNTabs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there.
      Thanks for your comment and question, I greatly appreciate it! I'm glad you found my videos helpful.
      No, that's correct, you can't assign specific patches via the CTL or Assigns. Patches can only be switched/changed using the UP and DOWN footswitches.
      You can, however, move the individual patches around, so they appear in any order you desire - that's just a matter of saving the specific patches in the desired order.
      You don't replicate a patch with the Assigns? The Assigns are there to activate/deactivate effects and control parameters.
      If you have a specific patch you like, but want to make adjustments to it, then you somply copy it, and then add the changes you want, assigns, etc.
      I hope this helps.
      Best regards.

      @@GuitarNTabs Thank you for your reply! So if i want to have a clean tone and two-three "dirty" tones (i.e a high gain/metal sound, a crunch sound and another/different distortion sound), and want to be able to go back and forth from any dirty sound to the clean, i should arrange the bank so that the clean is copied in between the dirty patches.
      Something like
      U01 Clean-1
      U02 High Gain
      U03 Clean-1
      U04 Crunch-1
      U05 Clean-1
      U06 High Gain -2
      etc

    • @GuitarNTabs
      @GuitarNTabs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kachius2408 - Hi!
      You can use the Assigns to have a clean, overdriven/distorted and lead tone within one patch. For example, you can have a clean patch, where your Assigns can activate the OD/DS block, perhaps some more, if you need that. That way you have both a clean and overdriven/distorted tone within one patch. If you then want, you can set up an assign to activate the OD/DS' Solo feature, and that way you have a lead sound as well. To that you can add delay, etc. if needed.
      You can also do it like that, as you described. It's mainly up to you, and what works best for you.
      I hope this helps.
      Cheers.

      Hey there, @Mehdy Cornwallis 😊
      Thanks for your comment, question and kind words - I appreciate it!
      Sure, you can easily add more effects to be activated by the CTL or any other footswitch.
      You would simply have to use more of the Assigns - Assign 1 through 6 - that will do it. Then make sure to set the source to CTL1 and that should do it. Then you will need to select what type of effect you want to assign to the CTL1 footswitch.
      Let me know if this help, or if you have further questions.

      @@GuitarNTabs It works perfectly after switching from distortion to clean using the CT1, but when I switch back to distortion I get the clean sound but with more gain in addition to the same amp (clean twin). Fortunately, I found a solution, adjusting the assigns using the tone central seems far more easier for me haha.
      BTW, do you have any idea how to get a good death/black metal tone using the GT-1, something like Behemoth or Cradle of Filth?

      Aah, I see what you mean now.. Sorry it took me a while..
      If you have set up the assigns, which activate the desired effects, to simply be activated as On/Off, then they should be disabled, when switching back to the clean patch... but I'm pleased to hear that you got it working.
      Yes, it can sometimes be easier to do it in ToneStudio 😊
      Hmm, I'm not playing much of that genre.. So I might not be the right person, but perhaps some of the heavier preamps, like the 5150 preamp or the BGNR UB preamp. They are quite heavy, so that might work! Depending on the sound exactly, you might need to tweak the preamp EQ knobs, to get it right, but it's doable.
      No worries, I'm not affraid of long ass texts, haha! 😉

    1. How many effects can be assigned to “A1” for example?
    2. Do I have to go to CTL1 before visiting each and every AS#”?
    3. Do all of the top console buttons have to be used up before I can start assigning the “AS” controls?
    4. If all the top six console patch buttons were tied to an effect, and you wanted to assign a T.Wah to “AS1”....how would you do it?
    Thank you for your help...I really appreciate it!

      Hey again, Mark.
      I can see that you have posted several comments here... In the future, it would be nice if you could keep them in one comment, so that I can comment one place, and not on a new one each time. It's no biggy, it just keeps things simpler. Anyway, let me explain.
      1. A1 can only have 1 effect or parameter assigned to it. That should also be indicated by the options you're left with in the A1 assign menu.
      That's why you have a total of 6 assigns, so that you can make changes on 6 individual effects or parameters.
      2. No, in each of the Assigns (A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6) you have a Source parameter, which determines what CTL or footswitches the assign is being controlled by. Take a look through the Boss GT-1 Parameter Guide - on Page 17 the assigns are mentioned and explained. You can find that document on the Boss webpage.
      3. No, you decide yourself how many of the effect blocks from the top row you wish to have on to begin with. The Assigns is set up to let you switch ON/OFF effects and parameter, and change EQ settings, etc.
      For example, let's say that you have the PREAMP block and the REVERB block ON in your patch, then you want to activate the DELAY block and the OD/DS block, the you use A1 to turn ON the DELAY block and A2 to turn ON the OD/DS block. Things like that :-)
      4. I'm not sure I understand this question? If you have all 6 effect block ON - FX1, OD/DS, PREAMP, etc.?
      No problem, I'm happy to assist and help. Just keep the questions coming - we'll get it sorted out.
      Cheers.

    So, then the six effect buttons on top of the unit are all the spaces I have to put effects in, right? I think my misunderstanding is that I thought I had the six effect slots on top and the six Assign places, giving me a total of twelve. But that’s not the case is it?

    • @GuitarNTabs
      @GuitarNTabs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the 6 effect blocks under the LCD screen is the selection of effects you have available.
      Then the Assigns will let you control parameters and other things for those effects.

    What happens to the patch we override? Like let’s say, number 42. Where will the patch that was on 42, factory, or user preset go when we save a user patch in that spot?
    Plus, can we move whatever patches we want into the top 10 positions? So we don’t have to start in the 40s or 50s, etc. We turn the unit on, and one through 10 are all patches we have customized throughout the 99 initial options?
    And I believe when I get into Tone Studio, these “write” and “exchange” options are much easier to do. ☺️
    Thanks!!!!!!!

    • @GuitarNTabs
      @GuitarNTabs  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, Parra.
      If you save a Patch to another User location, the patch on that particular location will be overwritten, and therefore lost.
      If you instead Initialize a Patch, it will erase all the current settings on that patch, and you can start from scratch, without having to save to another User location, etc.
      Yes, all User patches can be moved around, so if you'd like to have 10 patches in the first 10 user spots, then that's possible. It would be easiest to move the patches around using the PC and Boss Tone Studio, because it's drag and drop, which is easy.
      Things are easier in Tone Studio, yes, so it might make more sense there. Though, I would recommend learning these things on the unit itself, if you're not near a PC.
      I hope this helps. If not, then please let me know.
      Cheers.

      @@GuitarNTabs Thanks! But those patches will always remain in, and in the same order, as the main manufacturer presets?
      I’m getting it figured out, I found some great tones. Still having a little trouble assigning some of the effects. For example:
      I have a metal lead patch that includes the OD/DS, delay, and expression pedal set to trigger the wah… while also still working as a volume pedal.
      Is there anyway to add a phaser to this signal chain, for a few of the Van Halen songs?
      Hopefully I don’t need an external pedal already, ha ha. 👍🏻🎸
      Thanks again! Have a great weekend!!!

    • @GuitarNTabs
      @GuitarNTabs  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The patches your overwrite will be lost, until you perform a Factory Reset. If you Initialize a certain patch it will also erase all settings, but it will only Initialize the patch you're on.
      However, all the Factory Presets, found at P1 to P99 will be identical to the ones in U1 to U99, so you can always copy a Patch From there, to the User Location.
      That's great to hear! Yes, a Phaser can be added in, using the Assigns, and the onboard CTL1 footswitch. You should take a look at my Assign videos, I have it covered there. They are on my Channel.
      The external FS-7 would be a good idea to get, it will allow for further Assigns and control, trust me. It's worth the investment.
      Let me know if you need anything else.
      Thanks, you too!
      All the best.

      @@GuitarNTabs Thanks, I don’t even remember which patch I overwrote while exchanging positions. But I’m sure they are in the factory presets in the same order. It was number three or four.
      But I’m only gonna be using a few, for now. But I will keep that foot switch in mind, for sure. I always like to start with the basics first, before getting ahead of myself.
      Yes, I watched your assign tutorial, and then advanced assigns, but still wasn’t quite sure. Sometimes it’s not clear when to press exit, or enter, or how to actually save an effect change. And unless you say, it’s sometimes hard to see when it is zoomed in on the screen. But I will watch them again, sometimes it takes a few times, and I know it’s hard to film that bright little screen too.
      So like you said, it’s important that we read the user manual. Which is easy to follow, but still seems to leave out steps. But I’m starting to figure out when to press enter, or edit, or just exit. It seems to save a preset or a change in settings by exiting, I think. Hard to know what I just did, so many settings, ha ha.
      I’m like, shoot, what did I just press. They need an undo button, ha ha.
      But it does so much, it’s incredible. Probably take a year to really get the whole thing down. I want to keep practicing more than fiddling around with it. Plus, I just got a new Jackson, so getting familiar with that.
      Luckily it has similar pick ups as my old Kramer, so both sound great, but slightly different, with the same patches. I thought I was going to have to make two slightly different patches for each guitar, which would be cool.
      So far I’m using the same ones, I like the slight difference. 👍🏻🎸🎸

      Hi again,
      Yes, that should be the case, they should be in the Factory Presets as well.
      Sure, I hear you, and that's fine, you can always see. I just know, that I was glad that I got mine. It opened up a whole other world. I needed those extra switches and assign options.
      It's up to you, when you want to save, I just like to save my patch, when I have all Assigns dialed in. So in the end it's up to you.
      Yes, the screen can be a little problematic, but let me know if you need any help, I'd be happy to assist.
      Often different guitars will require separate patches, but if they're similar, then all should be good.
      Keep rocking the pedal, and let me know if you need anything else.
      Have a great day.

      No, sadly there isn't... On the GT-1 you only have the OD/DS block. However, you can add external overdrive and distortion pedals, if you want to.
      I sometimes do that, for example a Boss OD-3 or SD-1, just make sure that you connect it before the GT-1, like this:

The way Zi am trying to understand it, is that it could be done with AS1.....but I simply cannot make this happen. Again, I really appreciate your trying to help me.

    • @GuitarNTabs
      @GuitarNTabs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Coming on when I pressed CTL1"? Are you saying that the CTL1 activates all 6 effect blocks? Or?
      That's not possible, only if you use the 6 Assigns and set them up to activate the individual effect blocks.
      If all 6 effect blocks are activated, then assigning the T-Wah to a footswitch, then you would have to switch the current effect that's active on the FX-1/Comp effect block.

    • @Lespaul23
      @Lespaul23 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok...so the six effect buttons on top of the unit are all the patches I’m allowed , correct? Now , I can make them do whatever I want of course...that is to say the first button “fx1/ comp” doesn’t mean only a compressor can go there..and I could certainly put my T Wah there...right? I think my misunderstanding is that I was thinking I had a total of twelve slots that I could program effects into...the six buttons on top and the additional six Assign places. But that’s not the case, is it.

    • @GuitarNTabs
      @GuitarNTabs  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lespaul23 - I think we need to get the different terms down correctly here..
      The six buttons on top are available on every patch. These are effects and not patches.
      Patches are the different User and Factory sounds and tones you've got in the GT-1.
      Yes, you could switch the current FX1 effect to something else, for example the T.Wah if you want.
      No, that's not the case.
      The six top button effects are the effects you can choose from, on all patches. The Assigns is what will make you change, adjust and control the different effect blocks.
      Here's an example...
      You're on a User Patch (labeled with a "U" before the number(s)) and you have the Comp/FX-1, OD/DS and FX-2 blocks on. Then you want to activate the PREAMP block as well as the REVERB block. Then you would have to use your Assigns to do those changes. For example, use A1 to activate the PREAMP and A2 to activate the REVERB. Then, by using the SOURCE parameter in the assign menu, you can select which CTL or footswitch is to control these changes.

      Yes, the effect blocks' parameters can be accessed by holding them down and waiting a few seconds.
      You can also enter the effect blocks' different menus by pressing the MEMORY-EDIT button, and scrolling through the signal chain. The place the cursor on the desired effect icon and press ENTER. That will do the same.
      It's alright, no worries at all! Still, I'm always available and ready to help out, just remember that.

    Yes, I’ve read all of them.....but for some reason, whenever I try to attach a 1-6 assign, it simply will not show up in the patch....they just go off into space. I can assign any other effects I need into CTL1 via the six patch buttons on the top of the unit, but the assign 1-6 seem useless to me and it’s quite frustrating. I seem to skipping one small but critical step in the process.

    • @GuitarNTabs
      @GuitarNTabs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm, if you've watched the videos I linked to, then your understanding should be quite good, regarding the Assigns...
      Well... You have a total of 6 available assigns, within the GT-1 per patch. These Assigns can be set to control effects and parameters. For example, in one patch you could have Assign 1 to activate a Compressor, and Assign 2 to activate a delay. The 6 Assigns can be found when pressing the MEMORY-EDIT button, and scrolling to the last part of the signal chain. They are labeled with A1, A2, A3, and so on. Press ENTER button to enter the Assign menu. In there you have different options and parameters to choose from, depending on what you want to achieve and control.
      When the assigns are set up, always make sure to save the adjustments - pressing both the ENTER and EXIT buttons, at the same time. This will open up the WRITE menu.
      Let me know what you think, and if this is helpful.
      Best regards.

      @@GuitarNTabs I think I follow what is being said here. I do a lot of my research while I am out and about for the day, then when I get home I try it out.
      I had a quick question for this. I think I’m OK with programming the assigns, but are those assigns able to be triggered in various ways? Or if we have two or three or four signs on one patch set to the CTL, I guess they are either all on when the CTL is engaged, or all off.
      Or maybe I’m just confusing myself while driving around, ha ha. But are there multiple ways to trigger various effects using assigns, without too much tap dancing?
      Thanks again!!! 👍🏻🎸🇺🇸

      @@heyjarrod - Hi!
      Sorry for the late reply...
      If you need certain effects, at certain points, you need to assign them to a separate footswitch. For example, if you want OD and COMP to be activated, for one part of a song, then use the CTL1 for that, then, for Delay and Chorus use CTL2, etc. I hope that makes sense.
      There are also two modes, toggle and momentary. Toggle will be either On or Off. Momentary will only activate the effect, while the footswitch is being pressed down.

    Hi, please reply me, if the factory presets can be moved. It would be very helpful, if they could be moved, as it would actually replace the pedals that store sounds that the Boss GT-1 doesn’t have so many. If yes, can they be moved by the same way, as a user patches, you have just record in this video? And please explain, how the ctl1 is working. And please explain too, for example - Boss FS6 Dual Footswitch how it is working. Or if you can, please please record a video. I would like to buy just this multi-effect, I know it's great, I'm just not sure about it because it doesn't have a lot of pedals to store presets and patches. And if the factory presets could be moved, it would replace the pedals in which the presets would be stored before the concert. Do you recommend the Boss GT-1 or do you know of any better affordable multi-effects?
    Thank you for your help. I appreciate it a lot.☺

      Hi there, Elias Kuciak.
      Thanks for watching, and thanks for your comment and question.
      The Factory Presets can be moved, yes. They can be moved to a User Patch location, so that you can edit, change and save those settings. A Factory Preset can not be saved on its default location - marked with the "P", but once you move it, and save it, to a User Patch location, marked with a "U", you can save its settings.
      Regarding the CTL1, then please go through my Channel, where I have plenty of videos on how to use the CTL1, and what it is/does.
      That should get you started.
      Also, the setting for the FS-6 and FS-7 is explained in the GT-1's Owner's Manual and/or Parameter Guide for GT-1. You can locate those on the Boss webpage.
      I would really recommend the GT-1, no doubt, I'm really pleased with mine.
      Well, you don't store presets and patches on the pedals, you store the presets and patches in the memory of the GT-1, which is plenty big, trust me!
      99 User Patches and 99 Factory Presets.
      If you have multiple patches, and you would like to store them in a specific order, then that's possible as well. So that you can easily navigate between them.
      The GT-1's Assign options will allow you to have multiple parameters and sounds within one patch, if you wish to. I have videos on that as well.
      As mentioned, I would go for the GT-1, and that's my honest opinion, really.
      It's bang for your buck, and its effects and preamp models are spot on!
      You don't have to tweak parameters for hours, to get this thing to sound great, it's really easy.
      Please let me know if you have further questions, concerns or similar, I'd be happy to assist.
      Cheers.

Is there a way to E.Q. the new patch you create without using FX1? I tried to call BOSS but their contact system is impossible. Thanks for your videos. I bought this because of its size w/pedal to put on my board to replace my RP-255. Its not bad for what it does. Ius compact with a good size foot pedal. I'm hoping that the GT-1 has betterand more adjustable sounds. If you would let me know about the E.Q. question. You seem to know this unit better tna anyone on You Tube. Aloha Jim

      Thanks for getting back to me.
      If the patch were already saved in U20, and you moved it to U25, then the "original" would still be in U20, but also in U25.
      If you swap/move patches, then it will change their location.
      The EQ is located in both FX1 and FX2, nowhere else, like in the GT-10, GT-100, etc.
      I think you'll still be able to use one of the FX blocks, and get it to work. However, think about this, I would recommend you to use the EQ controls within the different effects blocks themselves - it will give you some options.
