    Thank you for sharing this video. Seeing how this cargo box still allows the hatch to fully open drove my decision to purchase this model. On top of that, I can drive my 2017 Subaru Outback with the Thule Force XL on the roof rack into my garage with a 7' high door opening with 2"-3" to spare. Highly enjoying the versatility of this product...

      That is nice benefit in that you can load it up no matter the weather. I was trying to check the ability to drive it in my garage but my wife was a little too short to see the gap between the carrier and the top of the door. :) I need to get a step stool so we can check it further.

    I just ordered one from Amazon. I plan on adding a couple of LED light strips to the inside center of the lid. I haven’t been able to find a picture of the lid hinges yet; I need one to see what kind of pressure switch to purchase and where to install it so that the lights will go on regardless of which side of the carrier I open. Any ideas?

    What I was looking for was a tip on getting it on top of the car by yourself without damaging car, carrier, or self

    • @Rickmakes

      If you have a garage, you could rig it up on the ceiling directly above where it goes on the car. I store mine hanging from my garage ceiling using tie-down straps. The straps hold to the ceiling with d-ring anchors screwed into the studs. I don't have mine over the roof rack though because I have a steel beam in the way. That could get in the way of the garage door so you would probably have to back the car in. I usually have someone help me but I can easily reach the top of the car.

      @@Rickmakes Nice idea actually ! Mine can go right over my 2019 Outback in the garage. I am going to rig a rope to simply lower into place as needed.

      You will need two cross bars and the appropriate mounts depending on how your roof is currently setup. Two common brands are Thule and Yakima. If you go to their websites, you can use their guide to find the right products for your vehicle. You might be able to find cross bars from other companies for cheaper. You can also sometimes find used crossbars or mounts. If you go with Thule, they seem to have a sale twice a year (I think spring and fall). Their products tend to be 20% less. Yakima may do something similar.

    Rick, do you have any suggestions for getting the spring-loaded hold open levers attached back to the shell halves? Mine pulled out while I was manipulating the cover and now I'm unable to reset them (mine also seem to be extremely tight at the spring).

      Sorry for the delay. I had surgery recently and got behind on my TH-cam. Unfortunately I can't look at mine because it is put away for winter storage. Does it look like it presses back together? If so, you might be able to use something like an Irwin Quick-Grip clamp to snap it back in place. You don't need the Irwin brand clamp, you can get similar clamps a lot cheaper. Harbor Freight has them. If you want, you can send me a picture of the connect on Twitter @rickmakes.

      @@Rickmakes Too late. While applying a little 'encouragement' to get it reseated, the wayward lifting bracket broke. My solution was to remove the other bracket and go without (it just makes getting into the carrier a little more difficult imho and the clamshell locks held the cover on nicely during a recent long highway road trip).

      Marshie Russell I had one from Sears 20 years ago. I think it was the X-cargo. It had a foam gasket. It leaked. The Thule is much higher quality.

    Hi Rick, do you know the inside dimensions of the carrier? I am definitely getting one, I just want to know how much cubic space I have to play with. Thanks!

    • @Rickmakes
      @Rickmakes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The carrier in the video (XL) is 17 cubic feet. You could roughly fit two adults side by side in it. I have a link to the updated model (XT) which is slightly bigger at 18 cu ft. Most roof systems will have a weight limit. I think the Outback is 150lbs. We typically fill ours with bulky items like bedding, folding chairs, clothes, etc... We put things like my wife's cast iron dutch oven in the trunk.

    • @danchen6783
      @danchen6783 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a non cubic space so the interior dimensions vary at different spots. Have to get a feel for the the space. I highly recommend the Thule Go Pack duffle set. They are specifically sized to perfectly fit the roof box. Amazing job maximizing the interior space.

    Can you mix and match the cross bars and cargo carrier? Or do they have to br from the dame company?

    • @Rickmakes
      @Rickmakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Thule carrier should work with almost all cross bars. In this case, the carrier is Thule and the bars are the factory bars from Subaru. It should work with round, square, oval and aero cross bars.

    Is it waterproof?

    • @Rickmakes
      @Rickmakes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It doesn't have a rubber gasket but it does have a large overlap where the two halves meet. I have used it in the rain (driving on the highway) and no water got inside. That being said, it's probably not a bad idea to place items in a garbage bag as a second layer of protection if you are expecting rain. Items can still get wet when loading and unloading.
