- This is part 2 to this series and also the final video. I left the last video off with a slide out that would not open or close all the way as I had bound up the slide arms by raising the adjustable roller too agressively and then bent it and then lost all hope and started doing what I told everyone not to do....adjust the arms. Not only did that not work, it also added another full day of work re-building the slide and compartments because I didn't trust the process and got emotional.
So here is the follow up showing my work around for the slide, the all important roller skids and getting the slide back to smooth operations.
Yes, it is a little bit of a hack job, but it is a solid repair and retrofit without having to remove the slide or manufacture a piece of angle.

Your project make me appreciate the way my Country Coach slides are designed. There are threaded adjustable rollers for slide adjustments, V shaped adjustable glide blocks for support and keeping the slide centered, and the entire bottom of the slideout is aluminum. Just say'n.
Keeping that positive attitude is your strength. Most of us I suspect would have imploded at some point 😅. Amazing job.
It may not feel like it to you but that was such an inspirational video to us DIY guys that watch you. To know that even with all your experience there are some jobs that just turn into much bigger projects then first thought. Most my projects end up that way, just ask my wife. 😂 Thanks for sharing even though it might have been frustrating.

All the money in the world you could get this good of job done in the RV Industry. The technicians are not talented enough to do such a jobs in this way.

The wrench at the end is the best. I've always been impressed with how you have adapted to do everything one handed while you film. Seeing the wrench go flying was just too much! The Adjustable roller can't handle your big Beeaver.
I’m thinking it’s the lower cover of a AquaHot unit.
I have had mine apart so many times I should install Velcro or a zipper instead of the screws. 😂😂
Can't imagine how much $$$ this would cost at Camping World.
An RV used to be a way to get back to the simple life.... Where have we gone wrong?
Maybe use some high quality double sided tape to secure that metal "shoe."

Great video sir! I always love it when someone says, "can you adjust my slide?" As if there were simple adjustments on ANY of them. Slide repairs can take you in soooo many directions.
Nice solution but...this is the exact reason we choose not to have a slide in our motorcoach.

Very clever, the front plate to hold the plywood in place!!!!! (song) sailed for a 3 hour tour...... Working on slides always eats up my time... Newmar (01 Dutchstar) used 1/2" ply to build a plywood box for the rollers to rest on for the bedroom slide. over time the ply gets wet and droops, so does the rollers and slide... had to replace the ply with solid doug fir..... a huge PIA... the floor of both slides are two 1/2" ply, stapled together....NO GLUE big surprise that they flex!!!!! I didn't make a "shoe" but looking at it when rebuilding surely thought about it. Now I keep a spare roller.... I love self tapping Teks screws, used them to build my steel house, would have used them to mount the roller deck to the aluminum structure instead of the rivets. I also would have used them to install the lower seal vs. the rivets. I like rivets too but if there is even a remote chance that I will have to remove them in the future I go with the Tek screws to replace them. Yes, I know, extra holes, but that is what caulking is made for.... I felt like I was watching myself do this job..... GRRRRRR..... Thanks for taking the time to make the vid.....

Legit question since I'm likely buying an RV in a couple of years. Could you not have used the larger roller type, mounted it directly under one of the lateral floor rails and placed a composite skid (plywood sandwiched between 2 aluminum plates) between the roller and FRP flooring (acting as skid and shim) instead of shimming the roller up?
The more I see you work on slides the more I don’t want a rig with slides. I currently have a camper van for just me and Tyler my dog and I love it except sometimes I wish I had more room. I’ve been constantly looking for something bigger but with NO slides. Lol.
I told my neighbor never pressure wash a home causes damage.. she did. I like a dummy offered to fix problems.. Water went thru paint wood color bled thru, removed all bad paint.the the windows wereent caulked right too little cault it failed on every window, it pulled apart. (water entered)and removed silicone a bear.(nothing sticks to silicone) so then I fixxxed all the opennings in the home. Termites like moisture seal it they leave. Last painters caulked nothing holes all over. cable guy was a bozo. furnace side vent was stainless tape to fill in hole.
James, it’s great watching your videos and especially these jobs you “ engineer “. Although I would not take on a slide repair like this but getting a better understanding of what can be done is extremely helpful. It helps my know what to look for or discuss with a tech the next time I have a slide out of alignment, which I’ve had on two of my motorhomes.

The adjustable roller (LPAR-53-DEL-1) has four mounting points to preventing bending and a maximum load of 200#s. The engineered load limit is not to prevent bending. The load limit is to ensure trouble free use for the life of the roller. In this instace the roller bodybent due to incorrect use.
The shim on the added roller and skid pushed the slide up too much. We can see the paint lines are off and the bottom of the slide is sticking out. This could cause new issues for you inside and out.
What a great work around to a problem many RV's have and your skills shine through! A lot of RV manufacturers used carpet as the sliding surface only to have it wear out surprise surprise. My fix was similar but I used UHMW strips for the wear surface and nylon rollers for the load. Works great and no more dragging on the floor.
Another great video James. Just when I was thinking “Super James” might be a stupid human like me (having to re-do a job over and over with extra drilled holes everywhere) - you go and cut that sheet of stainless steel with one hand.
As an rv tech it is great when you take us through the design process where we get to see the evolution of the fix where the mfg left the slide to degrade. Thanks for your super effort!

Excellent presentation. Thank you. For myself, I would rather have a "no slide" unit. This would also insure plenty of walking space when on the road and traveling. If you are virtually parked full time with very little travel, the slides might be ok but for me and doing a good bit of traveling, which is what these things are supposed to be for, no slides thank you.
Been there, done that. I can see the pain in your face and sense the frustration. I’ve had these simple tasks turn into ordeals. I used to have a hobby of restoring campers, trailers and RVs from the 70’s back to original and period correct condition. Same with classic cars. I’m OCD and a perfectionist. I no longer have these hobbies primarily due to health and medical conditions which limit my energy and strength. However, as I’ve grown older, I’ve grown a little wiser and I just don’t have that level of desire and patience to tackle those “ordeals”. Great video as a.ways. Thanks for sharing!

I dont know what the weight rating is but I think your adjustable rollers might have worked if they had been secured down like your final rollers were. I am guessing friction from the weight caused the roller to rock on that back flange. Just a thought 🤔

James, this was one of my favorite videos yet. I really appreciate the honest representation of the amount of work and re-work required and your ultimate genius solution. I also loved the bloopers at the end as anyone who has ever worked on a project has experienced the exact same frustrations.😊
James, you have and incredible amount of patience. This job definately not for the faint of heart. You really deserve some credit for even taking on the job in the first place and your perserverence in finishing it to completion.

I’m glad you found a working solution to an issue of poor design on my slides of this nature. When I first came across slides where the manufacture placed kitchens and cabinets and the likes over a slide out I cringed as I’m knowing over time and the weight of it’s not properly designed it will sag. I was thinking the adjustable roller could work but if there were enough of them spread across the weight. I see in your final solution you added more rollers that will spread the weight. Great video and excellent job keeping us hanging to see “what happened”

So the factory painted RV when slide was crooked.
And yet James lined up the paint and the spacing at the top n sides of the slide was perfect! So whatcha think that means….lol. 🍻

Great channel and excellent content! I was about half way through the video before it occurred to me that on the Beaver the lower bays below the slide also move out with the slide. Thats somewhat unique isn't it? Versus something like a Prevost where the bays stay put and the slide comes out independent of them.
Winnebago did it too that way you don't have to hit your head on the slide, but it does limit storage of course.
James, as always I love your videos and can’t tell you how much I appreciate all the effort that you put into making them for us. I worked for Loctite many years and they have adhesives that hold airplanes together, and I am sure they have an adhesive that would have worked to bond the wood to the floor. I have been using these types of adhesive options, instead of my go to options of nuts, bolts, and screws, taken awhile to break the habit but it is working.
My experience has led my to greatly distrust adhesives for most applications like this.
Could you have installed rivnuts on the roller bracket mounting holes and then run the bolts up from inside the storage compartment
maybe but its exposed to the elements and I have little patience for exact measurements :)
Couldn't you have mounted the rollers to some angle iron then with the angle face down and the roller sat on top of the angle iron then you could have mounted through the front of the angle to the frame? Or are you not able to mount anything on the front side of the frame?

I very much appreciate your well done videos, your “can-do” attitude, your indefatigable determination to make a job come out, not just OK, but better than original. I’m on a repair journey into unknown territory on my 2nd RV. It’s an 2003, 26 foot KZ Sportsmen with one slider and a host of problems. I’m learning more about major repairs than I would like, but this older, beat 5th wheel is all I could afford. My wife and I are in our 70s and just about as beat up as the KZ which is making repairs a bit more challenging. Watching you tackle big repairs helps us along. Thanks.

Kind of figures that it is my bedroom slide that that is a little out of square in the opening and needs adjustment on my y2k marquis jasper, main slide seems ok... does not seem even close to being mechanically similar!
The bedroom slide is much different for sure, but adding skids/skis above the rollers is a common repair on these slides.

James wny dont you have your leveling jacks down? your air bag system is not holding air and sitting that low on empty air bags is not good, ive seen this on a few of the bus chassis that you have been involved in..good luck great video always
