Every Motorhome Should Have One of These...So I Made One

  • While inspecting all these beautiful RVs, I see a myriad of cool and useful options. Lately, I have been seeing that my basement storage is a mess and also I need a way to keep tools oraganized on-hand when I am RVing. Recently, my friend Stacy, gave me a toolbox because he is incredibly kind and I wanted to put it in my RV, but I didn't want to lose all the storage in the one place I could fit the box. So imagine my joy when one of my dealers, Integrity RV in Mesa, AZ, offer to give me a tray system that has been sitting for years in the scrap bin? I knew immediately how I could use it. So here is a fun small project of re-using a lot of trash into a very useful basement slider tray.
I hope you enjoy watching because it shocked me how well it turned out too.
    Thanks for watching!

I have been a diesel mechanic for 35 years now. I’ve got 12 years to go to retirement. We own a boat and a camper, and yes, tools are imperative on the road. Sometimes we only travel 40 miles, sometimes just over 700 miles. But in the event of a breakdown, especially during an expensive vacation, the last thing you want is to ruin that vacation with a costly breakdown you know you could have repaired yourself IF you HAD the proper tools and parts.
My wife thinks I’m crazy for all of the tooling and spare parts I carry in the pickup truck, that is, until something fails and I fix it on the cheap because I prepared myself in advance. Naturally you can’t predict every failure in advance, but you can for more common failures, and NO ONE wants to spend half or more of their vacation budget on a roadside repair and technician.
Personally, I think your build is freaking awesome ! Wish I could make myself something like that.
Besides that, who really cares what anyone thinks when it comes to derogatory comments anyways ?
You are an awesome tech with a shitload of knowledge and integrity, which is one of the reasons the little things will keep you up at night, and why your client base is so loyal.
Rock on bud, and enjoy that machine of yours, you deserve it !

Great upgrade! You could add some LEDs inside the aluminum frame, and another strip along the bottom of the front edge of the drawer. It will illuminate the ground when the drawer is deployed. So when you drop a 10mm socket, you’ll be able to find it!

That's a great suggestion! Adding LEDs inside the aluminum frame and along the bottom of the front edge of the drawer would definitely make it easier to find things in the dark. It's those little upgrades that can make a big difference. Speaking of upgrades, have you heard about the Segway Portable PowerStation Cube Series? It's a versatile powerhouse that can keep your devices and appliances running for extended periods. Check it out if you're looking for a quality backup power solution. Happy camping!

My packrats in Tucson ate the Irish Spring soap we put under the hoods of the cars last year. I haven't found anything that really works. My latest attempt is Peppermint oil with Pine Sol which smells really bad for the first few days. I know it repels me and I didn't want to drive my truck...

But I really do appreciate all the videos that you have made over the years that have taught me so much about repair and maintenance of RV's. Your Beaver might be the best coach ever made, but I'm not sure if it is better than mine or not. Regardless, there is always something more to be fixed or upgraded in these beautiful beasts. I hope you can keep the videos coming for a while yet!

I have a lot I’d like to do on my ‘07 Navigator but can never find the time or energy.😮 When we looked for our Navigator, I did want every storage bay to have a full slideout tray and it does. Like minds....
I added a taller tool box like that one to my repowered 89 Fleetwood Limited's bay next to the side entry door, but it's not powered.😢
I used some 36" long 500 lb drawer slides and mounted my Husky tool box the same orentation as yours. My basement isn't as deep, so I built some (2) 12-inch long 2" square tubing posts with 4" square flanges on one end and capped the other end. I cut holes in the back wall so the drawers slides would go inside the tubing at the back of the compartment wall. (Still plenty of space between the tubes and the coach frame.) This way my tool box will slide out far enough to be able to raise the lid all the way without hitting the bay door. My bay doors are hinged at the top and with longer nitrogen lifts, they open all the way flat to the coach outer walls. Rubber stops keep the bay doors from damaging the gel coat. I modified all my bay doors so I could eliminate the catches that were getting ripped out.
My tool box just slightly rubs the weather stripping when going in and out. I used a removable detent pin to lock the toolbox drawer in for travel.
I store spare parts under and behind the tool box. Stuff like the old starter that I rebuilt after installing a new one. A water pump, and the old alternator.( again it was rebuilt after it was replaced with a new higher output one)
I figure if I don't need them, I may run across someone who does, and I'll just get them back on the road with them.
I'm like you, I carry way to many spare parts, and tools most folks won't have with them. ( like a Cummins clocking tool for rotating the crankshaft by hand.)
Plus I put a 120 volt shop compressor in one of my drivers side bays and plumbed in a 33 gallon air tank next to the chassis so I can run my air tools. Plus, there are air chucks at every tire & front and rear bumper. In case I need to air up somebody's tire or swap a tire. (My air over hydraulic jack & impact has proven to be a life saver.)
I'm jealous about that powered drawer slide!

James, I have the same vision that you do however I have none of your skill!!!! Awesome work on that and I love the fact you are using used throw away equipment.

I have the same tool box setup on a manual slide. It's a great addition to the motorhome. Great organization of tools.

Great job! I love making used stuff work also. Most of the time the manufactured stuff is not as fitting as you made. Take care
