When I was 23 (10+ years ago now), the only jobs that were associated with some level of prestige and status were your typical CA stream journeys, BSc, etc.
At 33, I can tell you for certain that there’s more money outside of accounting than within it. More career flexibility too, which turned out to be very important to me.
Follow your heart, but before you do, follow a plan ❤
(Edit: I was also a Top 10 matriculant, but in 2007. S/o to us)

Best comment ever! ‘Follow your heart, but before you do, follow a plan’
Thought about this so much I had to come up with an alternative plan. I do have a plan, just that the plan has nothing to do with being a CA anymore.
Glad someone said this. I always hear people say they want to be CAs just for the bag, but at same time ain't looking for opportunities outside of the CA route that offer more money...

I am doing my second year articles, and I have decided I will not do 3rd year. I am going back to what I wanted to do from the beginning, and that is being a teacher. I never wanted to be a CA(SA), I followed this route because of my background. Earlier this year, I had a near death experience and was in hospital for 2 months, it was at that point that I decided I will live my life for me, I will make decisions myself. I am going back to University next year to do PGCE.

I totally understand, because I'm sort of like in the same situation. I'm in my third year of university doing education. Its truly not something I want to do, I want to start my own buisness, open my own salon, be an entrepreneur. I've been getting advice from a lot of people and they all say the same thing: Finish your degree then you'll do what you want....but at the end of the day, they are not in mt shoes and dont understand. At this point, I really dont wanna do it anymore. I dont even want to finish. So it brings some sort of comfort to hear someone like you, who thinks like i think.

I’m no life coach but if I were u I would rather finish cause 3rd year you’re almost there. This life is tough. You don’t always get what you want. Even if you’re ambitious and you work hard it might not turn out good for you. Just be safe and finish that degree babes. I’m giving this advice with love ❤️. Plus, if you really got drive like that you can always start your entrepreneurial journey while in school. It’s not impossible.

@blessingmlambo_ I would have agreed with your decision if your passion was in an entirely different field. But the CA route will teach you to be a mainstream entrepreneur. You'll learn the soft skills, like business etiquette, relationship management and also allow you to build network of skilled people with both your fellow trainees and people with high positions in big businesses - which you can use to be very prominent in entrepreneurship. I would advise you have a chat with a CA(SA) in business before making a drastic decision. Of course its a free country and world but, consider it :) !

Bright people can do well in any academic field, that's a dilemma because you are presented with many options. Go for your passion. I got a Quantity Surveying qualification just because I was told to and found out it's not what I like career wise. I have always been more of a Creative Design person because the results/products are clear and recognizable. You are either good or not. Quantity Surveying is more like Accounting but of a very detailed nature. The results are hard to measure and often not appreciated. It's more about corporate bullsheet and a pseudo profession. I advise you to go straight into tendering, procurement and subcontracting if you can put up a team of skilled persons. I have seen guys with no experience or qualifications in the profession using this tactic. Within a year or two, they are driving big cars.

😅 I am in similar dilemma, finding it difficult on how I can merge my interest in finance and tech to find something that enables me flexibility e.g. set my own working hours. I recently completed PGD in Accounting.

@@blessingmlambo_ . My story differs in that I didn't go for something I thought I was good in , I went for something I thought I liked but after getting exposed to it , I realised it's different from what I thought it was . I still like learning about the field but I don't see myself working in that field. Luckily my degree allow 2 majors , and I feel like I resonate with the second major , such that I find some careers appealing In this field.
When I tell ppl about my 1st major , for them it's a fascinating field , but for me it doesn't mean much though I value the knowledge , I feel like I could have co-majored in sth that was gonna add value/ complement my 2nd mjr.

People who are successful entrepreneurs who didn’t go the corporate route they will tell you it’s a waste of time, but people in corporate they will tell you it’s also the way to go.

But you could be an entrepreneur and CA at the same time chief.
In fact, the CA title will give you more credibility and opportunities in your entrepreneurship journey.

Finish your articles. It gives you the edge over ordinary law graduates. You don't have to practise. Wherever you end up working, you will be viewed favourably, as an admitted attorney. Articles are a baptism of fire. In my time we felt like upgraded messengers, but we hung in there.
Most importantly, if you finish your articles you have you are never stranded for post retirement work. You work as a legal consultant. Tribunals will give you preference for part time work. So will Boards. Equip yourself.
