I developed severe anxiety issues about ten years ago and recently just started flying again. I'm proud of myself that I have avoided outbursts and outward indicators of my anxiety, but it still ramps it up to 11 in my head. The issue is not so much that I'm afraid of the safety of the flight, but rather the changing of air pressure and sudden movements of the plane in flight cause my equilibrium to go wonky, which always triggers the anxiety. Add to the fact that I feel anxiety about feeling anxiety and that makes the two-hour flight from my current city to hometown quite stressful.
Hey ExtremeMedium, That's a huge accomplishment to start flying again after ten years! You should be really proud of yourself for facing your fears. It's completely understandable that the physical sensations of flying can trigger anxiety. It sounds like you're dealing with a combination of physical discomfort and the fear of anxiety itself. Have you considered trying some relaxation techniques specifically designed for flying, like deep breathing exercises or mindfulness meditation? Also, it might be helpful to talk to your doctor or a therapist about managing those anxiety triggers. They might have some additional strategies to help you cope during flights. Keep up the great work! ✈️
It sounds like you were facing some pre-flight jitters. I hope it went okay! ✈️ If you're willing to share, I'd love to hear about your experience. Did any of the tips in the video help? Even though this flight is over, remember those techniques for the future. The more you fly and face those anxieties, the easier it should become over time. You've got this!
Watched this video just now. I had 12 flights during the holidays and always had anxiety almost all throughout the flight especially during take off and turbulence. My bpm is so high and I receive notification from apple watch. I have all done deep breathing and self talk but still doesn’t help much. I just keep wishing the time flies fast and we land soon so my anxiety will go down. Hope I can still manage this as I want to travel😢
Hey iamMau17, It sounds tough to deal with flight anxiety, especially with so many flights! It's great you still want to travel. Deep breathing and self-talk are helpful, but try adding distractions like books or movies, and practice mindfulness to stay grounded. Consider talking to a therapist or your doctor about medication. Don't let anxiety stop your travel dreams! ✈️
I’ve not flown in over 10 years now but have a 5 hour flight booked for in a few months. I’m already getting myself worked up and searching for self help videos. I took diazepam for previous flights as it got that bad with me cry causing a scene with my anxiety worrying other anxious passengers they moved me to the stewardess seat with harness seatbelt for a little while to help me stop the panic attack. I felt safer in that seat fully buckled in, no windows and sitting backwards oddly felt better. I cried again getting off that flight thanking them and apologising for my panic attack. I tried once more to fly with my doctor doubling the relaxant that time. You know what I did? Checked in and hid in the toilets deliberately missing my flight & holiday. 😂 I laugh at that one but honestly I need some serious help. I’m flying with my children and they can’t see me behave that way. I have zero control over it which is what’s most terrifying. It’s like it takes over me and consumes me. I shake, sweat, hear voices in my head and irrational thoughts that I just wish would go away. In your scale of 1-10 I’m at an 8-9 before we even get off the ground. If it’s any consolation I absolutely love descending and landing, just that final part, nothing else. I can’t eat sleep or concentrate on anything but the planes movements and sounds. Any thoughts?
Hey Alligatorjuice2, It's understandable that you're worried about flying after those experiences. It's great you're seeking help! Consider professional help from a therapist specializing in anxiety. Talk to your doctor about medication options for flight anxiety. Gradual exposure through virtual reality might help desensitize you. Practice mindfulness and relaxation to manage anxiety. Talk to your children about your fears so they understand. You're not alone, and there are ways to manage this! ✈
Hey arbenpali5124, Haha, you're absolutely right! Definitely NOT the best mantra for calming flight anxiety. 😅 It's all about focusing on the positive aspects of flying - the exciting destinations, the convenience, the amazing views. Thanks for the laugh! I hope you have a safe and enjoyable flight whenever your next one may be. ✈
At one point i was on a plane every month maybe less and then when covid hit its been 5 years since i touched a plane, i have a flight later this month and i have been binding plane crash go overs with alot of details and how changes are made, it makes me feel better because i know how things are fixed, its my weird tactic to get over fears of flying, not helping with my amazing fear general travel with any vehicle. This is a new thing i have started with the coping from investigation, and i am excited to have my flight soon and the anxiety reduction things are helping as well 😊
Hey analytics6855, It's fascinating how different tactics work for different people! Your approach of diving deep into investigations and understanding how things are fixed is definitely unique. If it helps you feel more informed and in control, that's fantastic. It's also great that you're combining that with other anxiety reduction techniques. Hopefully, this multi-pronged approach will make your upcoming flight a smoother experience. Let me know how it goes! I'm rooting for you to have a safe and enjoyable journey.
Flight to Perth from UK on Monday and I’m already sweaty.. it’s the fear of being trapped for me. No alcohol and caffeine and plenty of food will help I’m sure
@ glad to hear that because i stand in same situration as you, but i try to think positive about it! What was you doing when you was thinking about being trapped?
Hey Hayden, It's awesome that you had a good experience despite some mild anxiety! It's really encouraging for others facing the same fear. If you're still around, it would be super helpful to share what helped you manage those "trapped" feelings during the flight. Did you use any specific techniques or distractions? ProdNodus, thinking positive is a great start! Remember that millions of people fly safely every day. Perhaps focus on the exciting destination and experiences that await you at the end of the journey.
Hi all I’m now back in the UK. I found sitting on an aisle seat a massive help, also knowing that we aren’t alone and there’s a lot of people on that flight in the same shoes. Try thinking about the air crew and how often they fly and focusing on the food/drinks that are on offer and tell yourself ‘it’s just like a train journey’. You can put that in to play with turbulence too, just like a train journey has bumpy moments, turbulence is nothing more, just a windy day! But always remember that airplanes (especially established companies like Virgin, British airways, AA) will under go vigorous safety tests. Always remember it’s safer than driving a car! All the best, Hayden 👍
Hi @nikhaihai, That's amazing to hear! I'm so happy the video was helpful in overcoming your fear of flying. It's a big accomplishment, and I'm proud of you for taking those steps. Safe travels on your future adventures! ✈️
Hey AntiJihadi, It's completely understandable to feel that way. It can be tough to reconcile a fear of flying with a deep understanding of how planes work. There's no shame in seeking support, even with your background. You might find it helpful to connect with others who have similar experiences. Safe travels!
Hello! I haven’t gotten on a plane in 8 years! And even back then the flights were only 2 hours or less. I was diagnosed with anxiety and panic disorder back in 2022 but I REALLY want to travel! I really want to visit Washington in March and the crazy this is I used to be afraid of plane crashes but now Its just the idea of in a vehicle I cannot get out of lol. I’ve calmed myself down a lot over the weekend though and I feel more excited now but i know it’ll be different when it’s time to get on. I’m on medication for my condition so my anxiety isn’t bad like it once was, I was planning on just taking a Xanax before getting on. Please let me know how your flight goes!
Hey thegabbiedoll, That's amazing! Washington in March sounds great. Feeling trapped is a common fear. Try an aisle seat, practice mindfulness, bring distractions, and talk to the crew. It's great you have a plan with medication. Have a wonderful trip! Let me know how it goes.
Hey RxtroBrawlStars, Deep breaths! It's normal to be anxious. Distract yourself with books or movies, learn about how planes work, and talk about your worries. You've got this! Safe travels to Africa! ✈️
Hey RxtroBrawlStars, First time flying can be nerve-wracking! Try deep breathing exercises, bring distractions like books or movies, learn about how planes work, and talk about your worries with someone. You've got this! Safe travels to Liberia! ✈️
