Saludos Mr. Hewitt, gracias por tomarse la molestia de seguir haciendo videos aún con su mano convaleciente. Es usted una persona muy generosa. Espero se recupere pronto.
Thanks for sharing your magic with us. I'm a self-taught pianist, never had the resources to learn with teachers. Your videos are transforming my technique drastically...I'm beginning to understand music in a profound way. Thank god there are creatures like you unleashed in this crazy world...
Crazy it is, and I'm grateful to be unleashed. I appreciate your telling me that my videos are helping you with your technique and understanding. Keep at it!

@@KentHewittpiano88 Can you send me a link to the interview you're talking about? There's only a few on youtube sadly, and I'm not sure I remember this one! Would love more content of Bill.

I too wish you a quick and complete recovery! And thanks for sharing your passion and generosity with us. After this video I won't be able to find a justification to be lazy and not to practice enough!!!!
Chet use to come by our place in the Bronx when I was eleven to visit my dad. I often wondered why they were laying on the floor. They both died shortly thereafter. What a waste and blue and green always reminded me of it. Interesting you play this tune when mentioning Chet. Anyway, I learned allot from your videos and they reinforce my studies regularly - thanks Kent!
Thanks, Joseph...that's a fascinating story. We can only speculate. I do have a cassette tape of my gig with Chet stored away somewhere...and he could really play...and made some fantastic recordings...too bad our experience was tainted.
Thankyou for giving so much of yourself. You have forever changed my playing and my musicianship for the better. Also, I broke my pinky many years ago and had to (re)learn to play my instrument within the context of its new limitations. Ultimately, my discovery was that playing with passion trumps having 10 working digits minus the soul. The KH has shown that soul is never in short supply 'round the jazz ranch. Cheers!
I am looking at your videos....you are a fantastic piano player....and an amazing pedagogue! Thanks a lot for your generosity to share your experience !
Hope the recovery goes well! Can't say thanks enough for all the lessons you've uploaded. You're a huge inspiration and your style of teaching is invaluable to a ton of us out here!

Hey Kent, could you please make a full tutorial or upload the sheet for this now that your hand is healed? Thanks in advance, it was a wonderful lesson and my jazz improved thanks to those rootless voicings!! Love the altered dominant man by the way.
I only have a lead sheet for this one. I have other scores for rootless voicings, if you'd like. Also it's a subject in my book, at length. Thanks! (write to me if you'd like the lead sheet.)

Glad you're back. This was an experiment to see if I could play with RH bandaged up. I wanted to talk mainly about left hand techniques which many folks ask about. This is just one technique, so I tried to explore it more. Thanks for being back and writing and encouraging!

Hey Kent! I was thinking that if you can deliver such a wonderfully instructive video with one hand wrapped up, just imagine what a great video you could do for us with BOTH hands wrapped up!!! ..... just kidding, of course. Just want to say that I'm sorry to see your hand out of full commission and want to say GET BACK TO 100% SOON! Also, thanks for this great video (duh! hardly a surprise!). As a student, it's good to get into the head of a pro and see how your thinking process works. Books can't do this so well. Thanks again and hope your 10th digit gets real strong fast!
I was glad to do this video and after a week of no playing I was getting anxious to do something, and this didn't require a lot from the right hand. Thank you for the kind words and support...that really makes me feel good!
Thank you, Mateus. In my early years, I studied all the religions, (and non), seeking to find the truth. I concluded that it's all relative, based upon one's family, environment, and experience. The best help I gained in creating beauty, I believe, was given to me by my connection with nature,.... which came from God, and my teacher was Jesus. Unfortunately the ways of the world made me jaded and over the years I forgot about this truth. But I still believe in tolerance and respect for all beliefs....and for that I am humbly grateful.
Tears when I saw your hand this morning. I am 65, and after a life time on playing solo cocktail guitar my left hand is having trouble reaching some of my cords. So I have been trying to keep my love for making music alive by sitting down with the piano and your lessons. So so so hope your hand pulls through OK. The loss of the ability to play is so hard. Thank you so much for what you are giving me!
Just follow my playlists (and the links from,my book). that's the best I can offer ...here's my playlists by category: th-cam.com/channels/dmjw5sm9Kn83TB_rA_QBCw.htmlplaylists
I've mastered the voicing and the head at a basic level which I'm really happy with considering I'm a beginner. How would you recommend approaching the improvised melody you start with, trying to copy what you play to begin with and working within those notes and chords? You play a few sharps on the right hand in the improv that don't appear in the meldoy in the analysis, any pointers about the general principles here? Love your channel, thank you for everything. I've been learning My Foolish Heart (Bill Evan's recordings of that tune has been my favourite for 20 yrs so its a pleasure to learn it) and your left hand tips on playing the roots in this video really complement that too,
By general principles I mean the analysis later in the vid is really well explained, and I understand that and have worked the melody from the original recording in so I'm picking it up. but what are the constraints a beginner should be aware of when looking at your improv at the beginning, it's obviously not totally free on the notes but I don't understand what key / contraints there are with the right hand. Sorry for the ignorant questions but I'm trying to get beyond just copying and understanding what's going on. But I want to copy it as it's such a beautiful interpretation ha.
Great comment and questions, Jamie. Best advice I can give you in a short statement is check out my Beginner Improvisation playlist on my channel page. There's 15 videos I've made on just that subject. Transcribing and even imitating a solo from a recording is always a good idea. Many solos are written out that you can learn from transcriptions books. Also consider getting my book, because there is a lot of info there on Improvisation. Write to my email address and I'll send you more advice and ideas. . Here's the playlists: th-cam.com/users/KentHewittpiano88playlists
Many thanks for your great insights and your generosity in sharing them, maestro! Was trying to buy your book and wrote you an email to that effect, but so far to no avail. Any other ways of contacting you?
I've just started understanding what is going on with rootless voicings with a 9 like these. It's kinda like a math problem. If I want a minor 9 then I think of playing a major 7th based on the minor 3rd. Example is Db Maj 7 to play a Bb min9. Then if I want to play a Major 9 chord I build a minor 7 chord based on the major 3rd. Example would be D min7 to play a Bb Maj 9.
You're probably asking about the left hand using tritone substitutes and playing them with broken 10th intervals. That's an advanced, tricky technique, but it might make a good tutorial. thanks!
hey Kent.I want to congratulate you for what are you doing here on youtube!I do have a question, where i can find/buy the sheet of Blue in green?I really like it.Thank you in advance and keep up the good work!
Hi Darius...thanks for writing and kind words. Did you see my video on Blue In Green? I can send you a lead sheet for the song if you email me at kenthewitt@hotmail.com
Kent Hewitt you mean this one?I did look for another Blue in Green video, but i didn't find it on your channel (maybe I didn't search enough).About the sheet,I can't waitnto receive it from you.Thank you so much!Have a nice day.
Indeed. Kent in regards to your previous video could you please show your sample of reharmonizing of Blue in Green? Taking care of your right hand. Thank you.
No, you said Chet said he wasn't Manard Fergason. Hal Galper use to teach at Cal State Hayward. I read that story about Hal when he was with Chet. Hal Galper is a grad of Berklee Music School and also played with the Brecker brothers, and replaced George Duke in Cannonballs group.
The sillyness really helps. Even though you are technically very well versed, I still feel like it;'s meant for me with the jokes. Rather then something I should put off until later.

Kent Hewitt hey, some people have no sense of humor. The best musicians do, like you... we all need an outlet. Keep up the great work, I always learn something from your videos. Where do you live, by the way, back east? I’m out here on the west coast...
i hear a high g at the top of the first chord (on the original).. am i wrong??? maybe im confusing it because of the g minor chord but damn... even when i play guitar the melody tells me its a high g and the 2nd chord has a high e.. very confused, amazing video tho
As expressed by many of your fans we all hope your little finger regains strength and straightens following the surgery. It would however be a good idea to rest your right hand until your finger is properly recovered. There will no doubt be some physio treatment in due course and that will be the time to start exercising the hand. Until then be a patient patient!
For once I disagree! Swimming may be or even is good for the body but music is good for the soul and at the end of the day the body may be weak whilst the soul remains strong. You have oodles of soul so let your hand catch up a bit. Just returned from a lesson and Ruth (my teacher) says you can take a few days off as you must be a millionaire with your sort of talent! She means it.
+Kent Hewitt my apologies on the lack of clarity in my last comment (it was 12ish). Blue in Green is one of those songs where "the claw" voicing in the right or left hand is found quite a bit. I was kinda just wondering about your opinion on how you use voicing as it can produced a cool effect, but also be quite debilitating/could be used as a LH technique cop out. Do you use this voicing often in your playing? When do you think it's called for? (It's a little bit of a playing style question for you)
Okay ..the #9 voicing with the major 3rd on the bottom and the minor 3rd on top. There's a #4 interval (augmented 4th) and a perfect 4th. I like that voicing in 3 notes ...you can add another note to it if you like... (generally a whole step below the middle note). It is a rootles voicing the way I'm using it, ala Bill Evans. It's clarified if you put the bass note in. It can be a variety of things, dominant #9 or dominant 13, etc. because of the ambiguity. I explain this voicing quite a bit in my 4th voicings video. th-cam.com/video/WZgod7qnJPM/w-d-xo.html
Very mild mannered, quiet, and to himself. He had a lady friend with him that he spoke to doing breaks. He was not outgoing or personable in any way...probably due to shyness. But he was a great musician, understated, very introspective and serious, and he felt his music very deeply. Also he had great chops........I'm not sure if that printed out clearly...what I mean is he had great facility and technique in all tempos.
That moment when your right hand is injured but still play the piano better than me!
I hope your hand gets well! and don't forget to rest Kent!

Please do something with Nardis ! Just love it.
Thanks! I'll put that on my TO-DO list. It's a wonderful song and I used to play it , but not for years...so I'll re-examine it.

you the man kent
And you're a cool cat, John!
Thanks for your kind and thoughtful note. We learn from adversity...but I hope to be back at it in couple more weeks.
I can't believe you played with Chet Baker!...his version of Autumn Leaves is my favorite version of it
He was a sad cat...but a great musician. ADEM tells the story in one of my videos. Is it this one?
Get better Kent-Sending good vibes your way!
Many thanks for the kind words of support!
It seems that you were there, take care of yourself. piano impressed
Thanks so much!
amazing video! i hope your hand gets better soon.
Thank you for the support and well wishes...I hope to be back on track...soon!

Thank you so much. You show me the good face of life. Hope I'll can stay on this mood, for ever.
Hey Kent, was wondering if you can make a video on playing Mccartney's "You gave me the answer" in different styles or variations :)
Hope your hand get better soon!
Kevin, thanks for the kind words. I'm not familiar with that song...do you have an mp3?
Write to my email address and I'll send you more advice and ideas. . Here's the playlists:

Hi Kent hope you recover fast we need that finger I like your Twinkle Twinkle Little Star🔯 hope you feel much better
Thanks for the good wishes, Emmett...I hope to back at it in a couple weeks.
hi kent, well done for playing with 9 fingers! Have you had time to do a sheet download? Cheers
I'll have to wait a while before doing any more writing. It's wait and see time right now. Thanks for the good wishes!
Wish you a fast and complete recovery.
Appreciated!
Many thanks for your great insights and your generosity in sharing them, maestro! Was trying to buy your book and wrote you an email to that effect, but so far to no avail. Any other ways of contacting you?
I might have missed seeing it. Please write to me at kenthewitt@hotmail.com Thanks!
Right, a minor 9th in first inversion looks like a major 7th a minor 3rd higher. Thanks, please subscribe.
Would like to have a tutorial for what's happening at 2:37
You're probably asking about the left hand using tritone substitutes and playing them with broken 10th intervals. That's an advanced, tricky technique, but it might make a good tutorial. thanks!
good luck on a speedy recovery
I appreciate the good wishes. Keep watching,...th-cam.com/channels/dmjw5sm9Kn83TB_rA_QBCw.htmlplaylists
hey Kent.I want to congratulate you for what are you doing here on youtube!I do have a question, where i can find/buy the sheet of Blue in green?I really like it.Thank you in advance and keep up the good work!
Hey! can you show us how you would play "almost like being in love" (:
It's on my TO-DO list...thanks!
You're fast an pragmatic , i like it.
Great compliment (for those that like that)...many thanks!
Hi Kent, soon recovery to you. You video is very helpfull as I am learning Blue in Green at the moment. Thank you.
Good timing. It's an easy one for my right hand and people have been asking for more left hand techniques. Thanks!
Indeed. Kent in regards to your previous video could you please show your sample of reharmonizing of Blue in Green? Taking care of your right hand. Thank you.
Playing better with less fingers, I wonder how it would sound without fingers at all :-) Best of luck with healing the bent pinkie.
Thanks for the good wishes. Yes, both hands bandaged, playing might be even more impressive!
I agree!
Kent you da man
Only da man can know da man.
Hal Galper said when he was playing some fancy things , too loud Chet would say 'ladies and gentlemen Hal Galper on piano!'. Sarcastically.
Is this one my Chet Baker story?...I can't remember....thanks for sharing!
That statement is helpful and reassuring to me...thanks!
Hey,alter ego man!quit bothering the master.kent I Love your left handed studies. I am sure miles and bill would be proud of great teaching methods.keep on keepin on! Will
I can see you are a cool cat, Will. ADEM is just my way of having some fun...and some people don't like it...what to do?
Kent Hewitt hey, some people have no sense of humor. The best musicians do, like you... we all need an outlet. Keep up the great work, I always learn something from your videos. Where do you live, by the way, back east? I’m out here on the west coast...
What’s the name of the song used at the starting of the video? Thanks!
i hear a high g at the top of the first chord (on the original).. am i wrong??? maybe im confusing it because of the g minor chord but damn... even when i play guitar the melody tells me its a high g and the 2nd chord has a high e.. very confused, amazing video tho
I don't hear it, but you could be hearing the overtone. Your ears may be special.
@@KentHewittpiano88 trueee, i am playing midi keyboard so maybe the overtone is what i feel im missing.. ill have to try it out thanks 🙏🏻
As expressed by many of your fans we all hope your little finger regains strength and straightens following the surgery. It would however be a good idea to rest your right hand until your finger is properly recovered. There will no doubt be some physio treatment in due course and that will be the time to start exercising the hand. Until then be a patient patient!
John, I appreciate the good advice. I miss swimming almost more that playing piano...so much to do in a day..it feels like vacation!
Good luck with the hand surgery. I hope you will be happy with the results. Best wishes
If you've watched any of my recent videos you'll see that it's worse, but I'm adapting. Thank you. Please subscribe!
Du bist unglaublich
Thank you!
Those dominant and #9 claws tho. KH what's your opinion on those?
Could you please re-state the question?
+Kent Hewitt my apologies on the lack of clarity in my last comment (it was 12ish). Blue in Green is one of those songs where "the claw" voicing in the right or left hand is found quite a bit. I was kinda just wondering about your opinion on how you use voicing as it can produced a cool effect, but also be quite debilitating/could be used as a LH technique cop out. Do you use this voicing often in your playing? When do you think it's called for? (It's a little bit of a playing style question for you)
+Meyer Fishman a claw being a tritone with a four on top.
I explain this voicing quite a bit in my 4th voicings video. th-cam.com/video/WZgod7qnJPM/w-d-xo.html
thanks
Thanks for telling me!
What was Chet Baker like in person?
Very mild mannered, quiet, and to himself. He had a lady friend with him that he spoke to doing breaks. He was not outgoing or personable in any way...probably due to shyness. But he was a great musician, understated, very introspective and serious, and he felt his music very deeply. Also he had great chops........I'm not sure if that printed out clearly...what I mean is he had great facility and technique in all tempos.
