Thanks for the comment Kyu, but I didn't really apply counterpoint that much to this video. However I have talked about it in a couple previous videos. I think that jazz musicians, especially in the slower songs, use counterpoint, which is a nice harmonic conversation between the melody and embellishments in the right hand with something similar in the left and that must also focus on bass line and root movement. I should try to do more with that,...and you just gave me the inspiration. Did you watch my video on Bill Evans where I talked about how he really struggled to find his calling....whether to work at classical music or jazz?
the video of bill performing this in finland is my favorite bill evans performance. the serene bell like sound of the bosendorfer is so perfect for the tune
If you play one of those dissonant bill evans type chords on a really good piano with the right pedal held down and your ear close to the soundboard and wait it will start to sound like a voice choir harmony!

My book is excellent for beginner jazz students with some reading ability. If you are a complete beginner and need to learn basic reading skills, etc. I suggest Alfred's Adult Piano Course.
No, Bill worked out his arrangements to perfection and played them the same way every time...except for the improv solos. If you get any of his newer releases where there are 2nd takes...you will see that two of his performances are matched, except for the solos. He was a perfectionist, personified.

@@KentHewittpiano88 I just figured out that the reason it "Sounds so different" is because it's not even the same tune, it's just mislabeled on that live album. The second tune is actually Bill's own 'These Things Called Changes'. Found out when I was listening to his practice tapes here: th-cam.com/video/lhEuSjrsZq8/w-d-xo.html Sad to hear that you're finding it difficult to get inspired. I feel that's most of us these days, it's hard to feel anything when you're trapped in four walls. Though to say you're not talented is a remark many would disagree with :)
Sorry for the confusion...it's a matter of semantics. The 13th has to be in the octave above the b7... and it's the same as a 6th, but an octave higher. So it is an interval of a 6th above the root note but an octave higher.

You might have pointed this out elsewhere in your videos but he was influenced by his exposure to the music of the classical composers, Debussy and Erik Satie, right?
Please go to my Bill Evans playlist for more info and tutorials. th-cam.com/users/KentHewittpiano88playlists?view_as=subscriber
Great intro. Would like to hear your interpretation of a Lennon McCartney tune. Penny Lane comes to mind as a masterpiece but please choose any.
Vince gauraldi has spectacular jazz renditions of many Beatles tunes. Would love to hear what mr Hewitt could do with one
Nice request. Actually I played a medley of their songs in a solo piano concert. But I haven't considered that in a video until now...thanks!
@@KentHewittpiano88 your consideration is appreciated highly. Thank you so much for breaking down Emily. The song has always been one of my go-tos for Bill Evans, and every rendition he played gave it a new magic. Very very helpful to see it slowed down and analyzed by a great pianist.
PS
I've been following your channel for a few years and I'm starting my first band now as an outlet to help deal with the stress of college and life. I'm so happy I am where I am and I know I will forever be a musician.
Your generosity, wisdom and playing has been and will always be a big inspiration. thank you for your talent
What’s that chord you hit just after 2:55? Looks like it’s G,F Bb Eb F G. So curious???
It's the b6 triad to the G7, which makes it an Eb/G7 or G7#9b13. I explain this more in part 2.
Hello ! i am beginner of piano and i wanna learn jazz, do you suggest that if i buy your piano jazz book to learn piano? Thank you ! ! !
My book is excellent for beginner jazz students with some reading ability. If you are a complete beginner and need to learn basic reading skills, etc. I suggest Alfred's Adult Piano Course.
@@KentHewittpiano88 Thank you !!! It is very helpful
But Bill Evans most likely didn't play a song like "Emily" the same way twice or if he did, it was unplanned, right?
No, Bill worked out his arrangements to perfection and played them the same way every time...except for the improv solos. If you get any of his newer releases where there are 2nd takes...you will see that two of his performances are matched, except for the solos. He was a perfectionist, personified.
Lovely! I’d love to see a tutorial on his rendition of “sweet and lovely”
Actually I did a video on that tune, back in 2016, but not Bill Evans version. Check here:

Have you ever suffered from tennis elbow? I can’t play at the moment as it’s too painful afterwards.
I've had everything, tendonitis and arthritis, even in my 20's. That's something that any serious musician that has to do a lot of practicing will suffer from. I found holistic health studies helped me. Please write to my email for more info.
Didn't bill play this in another key ?
I think he played it in C and modulated to G, as in this version.
@@KentHewittpiano88 You know I'm just giving you a hard time...It's beautiful...
@@GuyMannDudeTheOnly I have also seen him play it in A in the solo intro, then modulating to G when the trio kicks in
@@jmarvins Yes ! I have that version! that blew my mind....if we don't tease Kent once in awhile ,he won't think we love him !
Always excited when you upload a new video. You may not realize what success you've achieved on TH-cam until the prodigies of he next generation are continuing your legacy! Have you ever considered doing Livestreams by the way? I think they'd go down well.
Next, a request! Have you heard the difference between the two versions of 'What is this thing called love" by Bill Evans? I would just die if you could analyze or comment on the differences at some point in the future. These two versions of the same song are so incredibly different. Bill seems to be a master at re-harmonization.

the Live version (Time Remembered Album) th-cam.com/video/V3MugbfXHtQ/w-d-xo.html
Thanks so much, Matt, for the comment... that is so affirming to me. (it gave me chills, which only happens when something is very moving to my emotions.) As far as your request is....I'm not sure that I'm the best person to ask. I'm not super talented and I don't have the greatest ear or expertise when it comes to transcribing. But if you write to my email, we can have a conversation....and then maybe you will inspire me to take on your challenge. Lately, it's been very difficult to get inspired...and you know why!
@@KentHewittpiano88 I just figured out that the reason it "Sounds so different" is because it's not even the same tune, it's just mislabeled on that live album. The second tune is actually Bill's own 'These Things Called Changes'. Found out when I was listening to his practice tapes here:

Sad to hear that you're finding it difficult to get inspired. I feel that's most of us these days, it's hard to feel anything when you're trapped in four walls. Though to say you're not talented is a remark many would disagree with :)
The land of the hip without the hop, lol.
We read Kerouac back in the day!
Looks better than Bill Evans😅
Don't know what to say.
it's great! thank you
Thank you too!
You write (7:56) that 13th = 6th above the b7.
Isn’t it 6th above root ? Or 7th above b7 ? Thks for all your great work. And your enthusiasm !!
Sorry for the confusion...it's a matter of semantics. The 13th has to be in the octave above the b7... and it's the same as a 6th, but an octave higher. So it is an interval of a 6th above the root note but an octave higher.
@@KentHewittpiano88 just one more joke from Altered Dominant man !!!
