    As you may know, last year I took a dive into laser cutting for model railways. 3D printing has become so popular within the hobby but laser cutting is a bit of a sleeping giant in my opinion and while we've seen a few laser cut kits on the market, I don't really hear much about people making their own laser cut models for layouts.
    So today I wanted to see just what I could achieve with the laser cutter. Creating an entire street of terraced houses was a perfect task for the Falcon 2 as I was able to cut multiples of each part and have each one be exactly the same. This would have been quite a tedious and repetitive build had I decided to scratchbuild these houses but with the laser cutter it was as easy as pressing a button!
    The finishing touch was some nice working street lamps from Model Signs, which you can check out here: store.modelsigns.uk/products/...

    Very interesting. Have you ever thought of selling the template for those buildings so that people who are not good at computer aided design can laser print identical buildings for their own layouts? Print at home is already a popular system used with paper / this card buildings.

      I wouldn't think the market of people who own a laser cutter but don't do any design work would be all that big. If I were to go down the route of selling anything it would probably be easier to just sell them as kits ready to build. Thanks for watching 😃

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy I am about to start on my "High Street" section of my coal mining town - meaning lots of row houses, and am cringing at the thought of laying out and hand cutting the project. The new layout isn't too far away now, hopefully there should be more news before the end of the month!
      Pickwick Yard can't be joined up to Pitley because it pre-dates my modular design. To get the two layouts to interface would require a complete redesign of Pickwick Yard at which point it would simply be easier to rebuild the layout again from scratch. Thanks for watching 😃

      The design work is the longest part of the process although I would say it's probably not as hard as people think. You're essentially working in a 2D space using only lines so if you can draw sides of buildings using a pencil and paper then designing for a laser cutter isn't much different. Thanks for watching 🤩

      Yes I tried something similar with scratchbuilding originally. Cool little project, definitely turned out well! I love the idea of using the mirror, that’s an incredible idea!! Keep up the great work!

      The mirror definitely isn't an original idea but it does work incredibly well and adds an extra amount of depth to the scene.
      Regarding the Victory - I actually have a load of different sound fitting/loco upgrade videos filmed. I had a sponsor lined up for the series but then they started dragging their heels a bit so it's sort of in limbo at the moment until they make a decision. Thanks! I use Affinity Designer 2 to create the designs and then import those designs to LightBurn to control the laser cutter. The Falcon 2 also has the ability to take designs straight from an SD card as well I think.

    What a great result. I’m sure that if I got one and tried it would look like something out of blue Peter lol. I’m sure the design is the key element. How long did it take to cut each sheet? Longer on the brickwork sheets?. Entertaining stuff.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It definitely is all in the design but really it's no different to drawing out sides with pencil, paper and a ruler. I really would like to do some basic design videos at some point in the future to show how easy it can be.
      The sections with the brickwork definitely do take a bit longer to cut, you can see in the video I was cutting 4 front facades in one go, which I believe took around 15 minutes. Of course if you need more, it's a 30 second job to replace the cut sheet with a blank one and run the same file again. Making multiples that you know are exactly the same really is one of the big strengths of laser cutting. Thanks for watching 😃

    Great informative video. Is the program you used in your design work included with the Creality laser cutter or a separate program? Thanks.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hiya, so the software I show in the video is Lightburn. It's not a design program so to speak but it prepares the files and designs for cutting/engraving - ie: setting the power and speed of the laser, selecting the cutting order, controlling the air assist, etc. It's not included with the Falcon 2 as it's made by a separate company and is not required to run the laser cutter - it just makes things a lot easier.
      While Lightburn does have some rudimentary design abilities, personally I design everything in Affinity Designer for greater control. You can use any vector based drawing program though such as Adobe Illustrator or even Inkscape if you want a free version. The completed designs are then brought over to Lightburn for cutting. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy thanks is it very easy to lay the bricks out in affinity or is it done 1 by 1

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Fairly easy - there's two ways:
      1. Draw a box the size of the brick you want the copy paste into a line. Copy/paste the entire line, move it up and offset it slightly then keep copy/pasting everything to build up more lines.
      2. Draw long horizontal lines with short vertical lines for each brick. This way takes longer in the design phase but is more efficient/quicker when it comes to cutting.
