Love Johnny Collin's renditions? of these shanties, something about the tone he sings them in, you feel closer to the sea and the work and struggles the sailors had on a daily basis in their days on the ocean.
Nice old song. The first whalers came to Hawaii aound 1820. They were hunting near kamtchatka and in the sea of ochotsk. And of course they sailed all over the pacific ocean. The most wanted prey was the sperm whale. And they sailed all the way back to Nantucket or New Bedford.
I found it in a random dude's cloud storage which was openly shared. Then decided to share it with everyone since there is no reasonable option to buy the album.
Ozan Akpınar if you could either email me or put a link to the guys cloud I really appreciate it this is like one of the most sought-after albums that I have found
'Tis a rough tough life of toil and strife We whalermen undergo but we don't give a damn when the gale is done How hard them winds do blow For we're homeward bound 'tis a damn fine sound with a good ship taut and free and we won't give a damn when we drinks our rum with the girls of old Maui Rolling down to old Maui,me boys rolling down to old Maui we're homeward bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old Maui Once more we sail with a gnarly gale through the ice and sleet and rain but them coconut fonds and them tropical lands we soon shall see again six hellish months have passed away in the cold Kamchatka sea But now we're bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old Maui Rolling down to old maui,me boys rolling down to old maui we're homeward bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old maui We'll heave the lead where old Diamondhead Looms up on old Oahu Our mast and yards are sheathed with ice And our decks are hid from view for the horrid ice of the sea-cut tiles That deck the Arctic Sea Are miles behind in the icy wind Since we steered for old Maui Rolling down to old maui,me boys rolling down to old maui we're homeward bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old maui How warm the breeze of the southern seas Now the ice is far astern And them native maids in them island glades Are awaiting our return Their big black eyes even now look out Hoping some fine day to see Our baggy sails running 'fore the gales Rolling down to old Maui Rolling down to old Maui,me boys rolling down to old Maui we're homeward bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old Maui Once more we sail with a favourable gale toward our island home Our mainyard sprung, our whaling done and we ain't got far to roam Our stuns'l booms are carried away what care we for that sound? For the living gale is after us Thank God we're homeward bound Rolling down to old Maui,me boys rolling down to old Maui we're homeward bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old Maui And now we're anchored in the bay With the Kanakas all around With chants of soft aloha hey They greet us homeward bound And now ashore we'll have good fun We'll paint them beaches red Awaking in the arms of a Oahii maid With a big fat aching head Rolling down to old Maui,me boys rolling down to old Maui we're homeward bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old Maui Rolling down to old Maui,me boys rolling down to old Maui we're homeward bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old Maui
*places song on repeat. How can anyone not absolutely love these?
All the way from kamchatka to Maui then eventually to Nantucket and other eastern port cities. What a life

Kitsune72 This isn’t Johnny singing this particular track, but yes, Collins has that sea haggard sound. So does Dave.
It's about bloody time someone put this on TH-cam! Thank you so much!
The lead singer here isn't Johnnie, it's Dave Webber!
And I think Annie Fentiman is there too!

I will second that this is an album I have looked for it everywhere but I'm not spending 85 bucks on thank you so much for putting this on TH-cam

Hey mate. If you could send me a link that would be great. Please
'Tis a rough tough life of toil and strife
We whalermen undergo
but we don't give a damn when the gale is done
How hard them winds do blow
For we're homeward bound 'tis a damn fine sound
with a good ship taut and free
and we won't give a damn when we drinks our rum with the girls of old Maui
Rolling down to old Maui,me boys
rolling down to old Maui
we're homeward bound from the arctic ground
rolling down to old Maui
Once more we sail with a gnarly gale
through the ice and sleet and rain
but them coconut fonds and them tropical lands
we soon shall see again
six hellish months have passed away in the cold Kamchatka sea
But now we're bound from the arctic ground
rolling down to old Maui
Rolling down to old maui,me boys
rolling down to old maui
we're homeward bound from the arctic ground
rolling down to old maui
We'll heave the lead where old Diamondhead
Looms up on old Oahu
Our mast and yards are sheathed with ice
And our decks are hid from view
for the horrid ice of the sea-cut tiles
That deck the Arctic Sea
Are miles behind in the icy wind
Since we steered for old Maui
Rolling down to old maui,me boys
rolling down to old maui
we're homeward bound from the arctic ground
rolling down to old maui
How warm the breeze of the southern seas
Now the ice is far astern
And them native maids in them island glades
Are awaiting our return
Their big black eyes even now look out
Hoping some fine day to see
Our baggy sails running 'fore the gales
Rolling down to old Maui
Rolling down to old Maui,me boys
rolling down to old Maui
we're homeward bound from the arctic ground
rolling down to old Maui
Once more we sail with a favourable gale toward our island home
Our mainyard sprung, our whaling done
and we ain't got far to roam
Our stuns'l booms are carried away
what care we for that sound?
For the living gale is after us
Thank God we're homeward bound
Rolling down to old Maui,me boys
rolling down to old Maui
we're homeward bound from the arctic ground
rolling down to old Maui
And now we're anchored in the bay
With the Kanakas all around
With chants of soft aloha hey
They greet us homeward bound
And now ashore we'll have good fun
We'll paint them beaches red
Awaking in the arms of a Oahii maid
With a big fat aching head
Rolling down to old Maui,me boys
rolling down to old Maui
we're homeward bound from the arctic ground
rolling down to old Maui
Rolling down to old Maui,me boys
rolling down to old Maui
we're homeward bound from the arctic ground
rolling down to old Maui
It's hard to imagine what these boys had to go through to earn money for their wives and children. May Fiddler's Green bless them
Listening on the 10th anniversary of his death, RIP.
He sounds British
Why wouldn't he be British?
