'Tis a rough tough life of toil and strife We whalermen undergo but we don't give a damn when the gale is done How hard them winds do blow For we're homeward bound 'tis a damn fine sound with a good ship taut and free and we won't give a damn when we drinks our rum with the girls of old Maui Rolling down to old Maui,me boys rolling down to old Maui we're homeward bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old Maui Once more we sail with a gnarly gale through the ice and sleet and rain but them coconut fonds and them tropical lands we soon shall see again six hellish months have passed away in the cold Kamchatka sea But now we're bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old Maui Rolling down to old maui,me boys rolling down to old maui we're homeward bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old maui We'll heave the lead where old Diamondhead Looms up on old Oahu Our mast and yards are sheathed with ice And our decks are hid from view for the horrid ice of the sea-cut tiles That deck the Arctic Sea Are miles behind in the icy wind Since we steered for old Maui Rolling down to old maui,me boys rolling down to old maui we're homeward bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old maui How warm the breeze of the southern seas Now the ice is far astern And them native maids in them island glades Are awaiting our return Their big black eyes even now look out Hoping some fine day to see Our baggy sails running 'fore the gales Rolling down to old Maui Rolling down to old Maui,me boys rolling down to old Maui we're homeward bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old Maui Once more we sail with a favourable gale toward our island home Our mainyard sprung, our whaling done and we ain't got far to roam Our stuns'l booms are carried away what care we for that sound? For the living gale is after us Thank God we're homeward bound Rolling down to old Maui,me boys rolling down to old Maui we're homeward bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old Maui And now we're anchored in the bay With the Kanakas all around With chants of soft aloha hey They greet us homeward bound And now ashore we'll have good fun We'll paint them beaches red Awaking in the arms of a Oahii maid With a big fat aching head Rolling down to old Maui,me boys rolling down to old Maui we're homeward bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old Maui Rolling down to old Maui,me boys rolling down to old Maui we're homeward bound from the arctic ground rolling down to old Maui

Not only is this song amazing, it is *easily* modified to be suitable to the needs of the moment. He parked his truck, and then what luck, He stopped to scratch the goolies, For he had come to *Represent* The Country, not the Stoolies Ref/ O Lord Above, send down a Dove To clear the Mother Cluckers Too chicken to sit down to talk To a bunch of peaceful truckers.

I heard this track on the Album (another TH-cam Vid) and I was immediately aware of how it bears a striking resemblance to songs still extant in my own North Atlantic cultural region lo these many hundreds of years later. I honestly assumed at first that this *must* be from "Home" but the reference to Yarmouth throws me off. *It might be Nova Scotia,* it might be England. But the sailors singing this song were, by a high percentage, Newfoundlanders. #TheRock Hey, if you're looking for something to compare this to... try searching for "The Old Polina", a song about a sealing ship which was renowned for her Arctic seaworthiness as well as her impressive speed. It has a melody which is likely derived from "Haul Boys Haul", and when played with instruments, a similar set of chords and progressions. Thanks!

Sailing over the Dogger Bank Oh, wasn't it a treat? The wind a-blowing 'bout east north east, We had to give our sheet. You should to see us rally, The wind a-blowing free, A passage from the Dogger Bank To Great Grimsby. Chorus: So watch her, twig her, She's a proper juber-ju. Give her the sheet and let her rip, We're the boys to see her through. You should to see us rally, The wind a-blowing free, A passage from the Dogger Bank To Great Grimsby. Now the captain he's a shangaroosh And he loves a drop of good ale, The mate he is a road-stone inspector, He's been seen in many a jail. The third hand he's a bush ranger, He comes from the African Isle, And you oughtta take a look at the poor old cook, He gets so hoppity wild. Now, we are the boys to make a noise When we come home from sea, We get right drunk, and full of beer, And cause a jubilee; We get right drunk and full of beer And roll all over the floor, And when the money is all gone, We'll go to sea for more. So it's watch her, twig her, The piperay she goes; With high heels and painted toes Jinnie is all the go She is one of them flash girls, Doesn't she cut a shine? She can do a double shuffle On the Knickerbocker Line.

This dirty town has been my home since last time I was sailing, But I'll not stay another day, I'd sooner go out whaling, Chorus: Oh lord above, send down a dove with wings as sharp as razors, To cut the throats of them there blokes what sells bad beer to sailors! Paid off m' 'score' and then ashore, m' money soon was flying, With Judy Lee upon my knee and in my ear a lying. With m' new-found friends, m' money spends, just as fast as winking, But when I make to clear the slate the landlord says: "Keep drinking!". With m' payoff gone, an m' clothes in pawn and Judy set for leaving, Six months' of pay's gone in three days but Judy isn't grieving. When the crimp comes round I'll take his pound and his hand I'll be shaking, Tomorrow morn' sail for The Horn just as the dawn is breaking. For one last trip from port I'll ship but next time back I'm swearing, I'll settle down in my home town, no more I'll go seafaring.

It is time to go now. Haul away your anchor. Haul away your anchor. 'Tis our sailing time. Get some sail upon her. Haul away your halyards. Haul away your halyards. 'Tis our sailing time. Get her on her course now. Haul away your foresheets. Haul away your foresheets. 'Tis our sailing time. Waves are surging under. Haul away down-channel. Haul away down-channel. On the evening tide. When my days are over. Haul away for Heaven. Haul away for Heaven. God be by my side. (Repeat first verse)

Nice old song. The first whalers came to Hawaii aound 1820. They were hunting near kamtchatka and in the sea of ochotsk. And of course they sailed all over the pacific ocean. The most wanted prey was the sperm whale. And they sailed all the way back to Nantucket or New Bedford.
