  • Hello and welcome to Basic Fishing from New Zealand. In this video, I decided to go fishing in the last minute and had a great day despite a hard day's fishing. I also got to test out a new piece of equipment that I never used before as well: a low mount South African style surfcasting rod. This was a whole new experience for me and it was great having to do some practice with this rod but also landing a fish with it. Overall, today was somewhat a struggle but I was able to land a few gurnards which was a great bonus and also landed a fish on my new rod. Look forward to using my new surfcasting rod and land some bigger fish in the future that is not a stingray or a shark.

    The reason the S.A Surfcasting Rod has a short butt is that it is still pretty common in SA to use a Scarborough reel. To cast with a Scarborough, you need to have your hand close to the reel so you can apply finger pressure on the drum to to prevent an overwind on the cast. Try that SA rod with an Australian Alvey surf side casting reel for some interesting 1:1 action !

    I own two of SA surf rod assassin evo and blue fish. Like the rod very much and style. Just need a Gimbel when you use low mount surf rod .

      well i try to reach 100m all the time sometimes over in really shallow waters. lot of beaches to try out for practice like takapuna beach, whatipu (closed atm), even muriwai

    @musicmadantidevil3688 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey man you should still try put out burley off the beach you'll get more rays and depending where you are a shark maybee but more fish is almost a guarentee if your catching the odd one without burley:)

    That’s a different looking but on that surf rod. More rod to cast but less leverage?

    • @BasicFishingNZ
      @BasicFishingNZ  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the leverage is more powerful due to the reel being to the bottom. not to mention less exhausting on the arms wen winding the fish in

    • @AdriftFishing
      @AdriftFishing 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BasicFishingNZ interesting. Yeah the winding is crap with a long but section

    • @BasicFishingNZ
      @BasicFishingNZ  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea haha not so bad on edible species but on sharks and rays so exhausting....
