    while I've never been in a theatrical production, I do think the fact that everyone's a hormonal teenager going through puberty in general, regardless of the "wanting the lead" role, would also be a major contributor to the drama cliche

    • @Carrie
      @Carrie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Yeah I definitely think that's a factor!

      Community theatre is FULL of adults only wanting lead rolls who end up being in the ensemble. There is a lot of bitterness and resentment that always ends in petty and childish behaviour in the cast.
      I and many others were on the receiving end of a theatre friend who created an anonymous blog where they decided to give "honest" reviews of shows which basically means trashing the shows completely. The site was taken down quite quickly and it was a few years after that I found out it was a friend. It was soul crushing and to this day I get so anxious when I get the opportunity to play a leading roll.
      You need a tough skin when working in community theatre!!

      I am in high school and the theater cliche is actually quite the opposite. I am a freshman and most of them are seniors so they are really nice and supportive. But some people will be really weird to you if you got a better part but then they are not really the theater kids “friends”

    I'm a theatre historian and the number of stories about dank and frankly dangerous theatres in the 19th century are shocking, they had open sewers running though the dressing rooms and they wondered why the actors kept dying of cholera.

    I think doing an “assumptions about having a famous sibling” would be interesting! Like people are always asking you in IG Q and A’s if you get roles because Tom’s your brother.

    I totally get where you said that the smell of an old theatre, no matter what, even dead mouse makes you nostalgic. As a child, we lived on the edge of town. Across the street was the start of rural so there were cows and manure and ponds with stinkweed and rotting reeds, not far away was a brewery so the mash stunk up the air and if I close my eyes, it's like the smell of playing outside on summer evenings when all that whafted in.

    I asked the question about social media and public image. I asked because in the jobs I've had (government/council) I've had my social media controlled very tightly and I am not allowed to appear on TV in case it shows me speaking for government

    • @hannahb195
      @hannahb195 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it is becoming more common in a lot of industries these days (especially in the public sector) that public imagine/ social media can be somewhat monitored by organisations. I work for the NHS and there are certain terms in contracts about discussing matters with media and posting on social media. However as Carrie mentioned (especially when not in the public sector, therefore little to no government involvement) there is such a grey area on what organisations can actually do to control individuals social media usage and unless you are slandering an organisation what really can they do about it. Such an interesting concept though.

    • @Chadfail
      @Chadfail 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hannahb195 Thats very true, I've seen people fired for posting online however and it was fairly mild. I asked the question as well because I've seen some actors speak out against certain things and the rest of the cast not agree and that kind of thing. It's super interesting to me what's said before hand. I usually get a big lost of things we can't talk about

    • @Mitali
      @Mitali 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest in every job I've had there's been a clause in the contract about not bringing the company into disrepute. And I think if you did something unacceptable or "out of line with the company's values" on social media, they could use that clause to suspend or fire you.
      And these weren't jobs where you were a "public figure". These were admin and shop assistant jobs.

    Local theaters in the US do not usually pay swings on nights they don’t perform. I’d love to be a swing if I always got paid cause I love stepping in last minute and am good at adapting but it doesn’t pay the bills doing small but professional theater

  • @emma.328
    @emma.328 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another difference between youth theater and professional theater is that age/how old you look matters. In my school’s production of Annie the guy who played Warbucks was only 1 year older than the person playing Annie and in professional theater that would never happen. Sometimes the parts u can play will in a certain show will be limited due to a variety of things such as looks and vocal range. Like if you’re an alto in the Les Miz cast, you’re probably not gonna be able to play/sing Cosette so why would u be jealous of whoever is playing her?

    I'm really curious about mics and stuff. For each cast member, is there one person in the... sound place (?) controlling whether your mic should be on or off? Or is it one person who does it all? Or one person per couple of characters? Not sure if I worded that right but I'm really curious 😂🎤🎚

    • @LovelyLawla
      @LovelyLawla 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For most shows there are a few "sound people" but for any given show only one person works the sound desk (aka sound place :) ) for all the mics and sounds effects. A guy called Andy who worked backstage (He is Lighting from what I remember) at the Addams family has a vlog about sound at Addams th-cam.com/video/CwacT1f0n3A/w-d-xo.html

    I never really felt like there was any drama between cast members in school plays over anything. There was a little drama over stuff like that in my gcse drama class, and an occasion where I got an award for hard work and progress and several people had a go at my teacher (like literally shouting at her) because they didn't think that I deserved it (ngl, that was a low point). But where I personally felt like there was drama and bitchiness was at my uni's Amateur Dramatics Society, mostly because it was just really cliquey, it got to the point where I wanted to leave but was one of the committee members of the Society so couldn't really do that, our final show was cancelled due to covid (with only a few days notice) and despite the fact that I'd worked so hard to get it all together, I was really happy that I didn't have to be associated with the group again.

      Same! I went to the auditions, but one girl who was planning on auditioning couldn't be there cause she ended up in hospital the night before (we weren't friends). When the cast list came out and I got the lead (bear in mind she hadn't even auditioned) she got her mum to write a formal letter of complaint to the school about me, about how I apparently bullied her child because she didn't get the role and I did, and said some quite hurtful things about my apparent lack of ability... So they let this girl audition. I still ended up in the lead 😂

      @@lilyk5898 oh my god! imagine thinking thats bullying😂😂 Another time there were auditions for the school panto (it was like Cinderella gone wrong, one of my teachers wrote it) and this one girl made a huge deal about how the auditions were unfair because the teacher was gonna pick me for the lead and said she wasn't going to audition because of it. Keep in mind, we're in sixth form so we're both 18 at the time. My teacher literally came to me after auditions and said that they wanted me to play the lead role but because of the huge deal this other girl made, they were going to write in another lead character so she didn't get upset!

    As someone who does a lot of community theatre I think you're on the money about there not being enough people to fill the roles so you end up with people who competed for a role all in the cast.
    In my experience there has been much cattiness amongst various cast members about casting decisions (age absolutely not a factor) and it seems pretty obvious now you mention it that it's got something to do with having not as many people to fill roles, as well as having just not that many roles to audition for. When a role is more coveted, but also more people are needed to fill an ensemble, you're just asking for trouble.
    Obviously professional theatre is a whole different ballgame, and additionally because they can afford to be choosey the people who maybe don't have the best attitude will probably not be hired anyway.

    Loved this! Maybe a Disney Parks / Disney World one, since I have so many expectations and assumptions on these since I've never been but I watched a lot of vlogs on them?

      My friend (let’s call her Kate) and I auditioned for a school play that a teacher wrote, the soundtrack was all group numbers except one solo song. We both auditioned for the role and I got it, she was really mean to me after. When I first sung my solo in rehearsal it was just before lunch so after I did it we went straight to break. Everyone was complimenting me and telling me I did great and it took me ten minutes to get out to break because everyone was crowding me and talking to me, I felt so happy and was so grateful to have the part, I saw my friend group but couldn’t see Kate, I then found out that she locked herself in the bathroom because she refused to talk to me. I didn’t brag or anything, but she didn’t talk to me until a week after the performance. I understand not getting the role may be upsetting but at least be happy for your friend, for months after she didn’t let me talk to anyone about that show. I was so grateful for the opportunity and especially for people to like it, but I just wished she was happy for me. After that she made everything a competition between us, and she got so aggressive that it was becoming toxic, so I unfriended her. WOW this was long, I just wanted to share my experience with this sort of thing

    I wonder too if the drama question also comes from people outside of theater a lot. Most of the offices I have worked in have had a LOT of drama. Like really, horrible, sometimes legit bullying, drama. Sadly, I know that's not uncommon in a lot of industries so I bet people assume that with theater, you're working really closely together for so long, traveling together, some might be getting more attention from press and all than others, etc. and people might just assume that naturally there's drama. My assumption has always been the opposite for theater. Everyone in professional theater usually knows how incredibly fortunate they are to be where they are and they're so happy getting to actually follow their dream and do what they truly love. Not to mention you're often doing really emotional shows or you have really big moments on stage as a cast and you just truly come together over it. I would assume you would become so much closer than many workplaces because of that.

    Carrie from London- I don’t know where this person is from but they are using “y’all” and I really enjoy it
    Me from Arizona- I always saw y’all...
    Also me- is that weird that I saw y’all?

      It's not weird at all! It's just nice to hear colloquialisms from places we aren't from, as no one in the UK really says y'all!

    Did you have to ask the production the permission to do backstage vlogs like you do or Zoe Doano did ? I'm asking this for Les Miz and the others shows you were in :)

      Carrie has mentioned this in a previous video, though I can’t remember which. She wasn’t allowed to vlog when she started as Eponine. She didn’t share Les Mis content until well into her run - I think sometime in her second year.

    What about the assumption that many people in theater groups are boning one another? I'm always curious if there's any truth to that lol.
