- We temporarily disconnect the single cable going to the intake grid heater which will draw 200 plus amps on a 64 degree warm morning for 10 seconds.
Hundreds of catastrophic engine failures have occurred across the U.S. and Canada and continue to mount every day as the weakest link in the chain erodes with every "wait to start" cycle, usually as a result of the energizing solenoid staying in the "on" state.
The best insurance is to check your bolt and the insulator surrounding it with a simple wiggle test for movement. If any loose movement is felt, it should be addressed.

I unhooked power feeding the solenoid from the right battery, heat shrinked the end and tied it back. I live in ND and even in sub zero weather the truck is either in a 40˚ garage (home) or block heater plugged in (work) and it always starts no issues. In my case grid heater is not needed.

@daddynowski You could simply remove the terminal at the battery, or remove it at the solenoid. Either way, be sure to zip tie all slack out of harms way.
You can watch several videos on YT to get comfortable with it.

So all you do is disconnect the wire from the solenoid to the heater and it doesn't throw a code as long as you don't wait to start when it tells you to? and I don't have remote start so wouldn't be an issue with that. Here is South Texas we rarely have cold weather anyway.
Exactly. I just put up a video that shows the code P2609 and CEL on, and cleared it out with an Xtool D7 scan tool.
You should have zero issues down in Texas.

I have a 2017 also and I disconnect at the battery. Easier to do and no codes as long as you don't wait to start. Forgot one day when it was cold and used remote start...it was easy to clear code with a scan tool. I happen to have a Scangauge II that I leave plugged in for extra gauges and I used it to clear the code.

When you take it in for service make sure you put it back or thier going to void your warranty on your truck.
@@ricardorodriguez-se7tp it has already been in for recalls and i told them it is disconnected and to LEAVE IT ALONE, if i cannot park it near a structure due to possible fire then it will stay that way until part comes in for recall!!! let em try to void the warr, they will pay dearly.....
i have a 15 and a 22, the 22s do not have the issue of the bolt coming loose only the 4th gen 6.7s not the 5gs the issue with the 5gs was an issue with the relay going in fire, it’s something totally different then what this video is referring to, re connect yours in the 22 no need for it to be disconnected
@@jakebunai9202 they are replacing the entire top piece for the current recall, that’s when it will be reconnected, I am not in a snow zone so no impact for me
What is the coldest temp this has been done in? I live in a northern state and in the winter it can get down to single digits for multiple days.
I have no problems down to 25 degrees F, any colder than 25 and I'll plug her in.
The OEM design is stupid in the sense that it will actually heat the grid at 62 degrees F and less and that is unacceptable.

I would insulate that cable! You have it going straight to ground if it should ever make contact through the paint of that lift bracket, and miss the quick start and it goes to grid cycle. Better to disconnect that cable at the grid solenoid on the passenger side, this way never a chance for current to run through it. Crazy.
No doubt this guy don't know electricity and it could cost him his life.

The cable he zip tied up to the lifting bracket is not energized at all as it is not hooked to the solenoid

Does remote start set a light? I've read that it can, I need the remote start to get the ac blowing so my truck don't cook me at 110 degrees
If it does throw a code can you still drive the truck with an active code until you get the code cleared?
Yes, you can drive with the P2609 code. I drove my truck for a few days with the CEL on due to waiting too long to start the engine so it set the code. Easy to reset and clear with a scan tool.

I'm not sure on the 2019 model as Cummins went to the GCI block during that year and other changes also. I would check out that generation on forums like TDR.

I guess your trigger finger surgery ended up a success. I’m needing to have it done. I just wanted to see your long term effect.
Deborah, the middle finger is probably at 98 percent. The first knuckle joint has a slight bend in it that I can't straighten to 100 percent. I can fully bend it in and have good grip strength in it.
Now I have the right thumb and ring finger triggering badly. I can't straighten my thumb at all but I'm pretty sure I damaged the tendon by just simply working hard tearing down two buildings with crowbars and sawzalls. Lots of hard gripping there. I see Kleinert Kutz Hand Care in Louisville in two weeks.
They will actually do testing to see what's going on versus zero testing with one extremely painful injection followed by trigger release surgery.
As I get older I think my tendons are getting weaker or something like that, I'm going to ask Doc if that's what is going on.

Does autostart still works?
I have not used autostart, but was told it will throw a code due to time limit as the ECM waits for a clear to start command. Another commenter here has used his and he got a code but cleared it with his idash unit or similar. This grid heater cycled every time when ambient temp is below 63 degrees, a ridiculous number.
Why isn't this a recall issue?
That's a good question. I'm not hooking mine back up no matter what FCA says. I'm sure they'll bitch about it though when I eventually take my truck in for that 67A crap.
