    Sweetwater sent me all the new UA amp/cab sim pedals to check out, the Ruby and Woodrow are fine, I don't really connect with those style of of amps in general. BUT OMG THE DREAM 65 IS EVERYTHING IVE EVER WANTED IN A FENDER STYLE AMP PEDAL! These were all loaners but I'm 100% getting one for myself and likely selling off most of my other amp/cab pedals.

    I have an Iridium and a Flint as well as a real 1970s Vibrochamp and Fender spring reverb tank, so it’s hard to justify, but man this thing sounds so good. The Fender sound is my sound, so I can definitely see myself caving. Maybe I can last until Christmas. Lol.

    Leave it to UA to finally drop some really good blackface cleans in a box. To me it seems like the most difficult sound to emulate well. Especially for the price.

    Guys guys guys I'm so excited, I'm gonna leave this comment under every Dream65 review I can find. No idea why they don't advertise this more clearly, but you CAN indeed use headphones with it. I bought a little 8$ adapter cable (Y-cable, two quarter inch inputs to one mini output), and it drives my Sennheisers (HD25) fine. No idea if there are cans this won't work with, but it worked great for me.

    Great job on the Dream 65. Amazing model of the most recorded amp in history. You need to play with the Ruby some more. The AC30 was a unique and brilliant design. Folks need not be afraid to crank the treble and/or bass controls to the extremes then adjust the cut control to compensate. Every control on those amps is important to the voicing. You'd be surprised how pristine and how much usable overdrive one can get from an AC30. Hank Marvin with the Shadows got amazing tones from the AC30. Brain May, the Beatles, and even Slash recorded with this classic amplifier.

    Brilliant demo. Trust UA to truly capture the tonal essence of these amplifiers.
    When they announced they were moving into pedals, I was skeptical. Not any more. I own the Starlight, Astra and Golden pedals after being blown away when I demoed them. I predicted that they would bring out some amp sim pedals soon, but I wasn't expecting them to be released this quickly and I certainly wasn't expecting them to sound so gorgeous. Wow. The only problem is I have to save up $1200 for these three delightful musketeers!

    I got the Dream and the Ruby. I love the AC-30 and really think the Ruby will be great, but like you...the Dream was so wonderful I haven't gotten past it. I play in a band that covers 60's thru 90's and the Dream blows away my Helix (even though I love my Helix). As soon as I plugged up the Dream at rehearsal the keyboard player jumped around his keys and said that my sound was wonderful!! It is really nice to have an emulation pedal that does one thing great and has pots similar to a real amp.

    Thank you so much for this video. I actually wanted the Woodrow because I play '60s style soul and wanted something that got me closer to that Steve Cropper/Stax tone. Granted, he used a Harvard, not a Deluxe. But every video I watched on it was guys with strats, or some kind of humbucker pickup equipped guitar, cranking the Woodrow up and complaining about how hard it is to get a sound out of it, and saying how limited it is and none of the videos showed me what I wanted and so I gave up and decided I'd watch a few Dream 65 videos and most likely I'd get that. The first I watched was from Sweetwater, and he played enough clean stuff that I was starting to think "yeah...maybe". Yours was the second one I played and 5 minutes in you sold me. I was down. I mean, I kept watching but after five minutes I opened another tab and dropped that in a cart to buy online. I kept watching more out of curiosity but I was already sold. But then you switched to the Tele (which is what I use mostly) and at 44:02, you did a quick cut in your edit and suddenly you started playing something that sounded like the intro to Sam & Dave's "Soul Man" and for about 15 seconds you played me exactly what I wanted to hear in all those other Woodrow videos. Of course then you went like all the others and kept trying to play with the dirt. But that's cool. That's you. But you did change my mind and now the Dream 65 is something I'll look into buying later. The Woodrow's in the cart and for that I thank you again.

    I am pretty happy with my Walrus ACS1, but I always just have them on the Fender setting and don't utilize the different cabs/amp types on the separate outputs. Having this guy where it focuses on being the best fender amp in the box thing seems like a better fit. Having an Apollo X4 interface, I've been really impressed with everything UA I've touched from the interface to UAD plug-in stuff. Wasn't sure how you might compare the two?
    I also really appreciate how you showed it before drives. I felt my amp sim was about gassed out, but that is now apparently been completely fucked and it's all your fault.
    Great vid and will have to try this out soon.

I have a Deluxe Reverb and AC30 that I can't put above 3 or my neighbors flip their shit, so I'm mostly playing into a Boss Waza tube amp expander, often just with headphones. It's so much stuff. For those who tried the Dream 65: having tried with pedals, I think it only sounds good when the volume is 9h or below. Above 9h, you start to get a Fender amp distortion, which sounds nice by it's own, but I think it "modifies" the sound of the other pedal too much (I've tried Origin Revival drive compact, Jackson Audio Golden Boy and a RAt clone). Do you guys experienced something like that?

    The English guy in the Sweetwater video did a much better job with the Ruby. It sounds very good there, although he wasn't using ANY Fender guitars, which is weird demo-ing an amp thats emulating a Vox!. You'd never know how good the Ruby is from this demo here. I have a feeling that best demo of the Ruby is yet to come. The Dream 65 sounds great in the demos I've seen. I have to say, It's very tempting to go this route (DSP models) when recording. So much simpler.

    Great video. It’s a lot like Alice In Wonderland-the first half soars, the second half just doesn’t lift off.
    I noticed that you misunderstood the tone controls on the Ruby. They cut when turned clockwise. You had all the treble rolled off when you when trying cabs and I could tell it messed with your ears.
    I would recut the video and try again on a fresh day with each pedal. In other words, make this a three part series. Even if you don’t spend a lot of time on the others it’s cool because the Dream65 portion was outstanding.

      Yes, you can plug straight in, but if connecting to an amp it is preferable to plug in the fx loop. 4 wire method.
      The pedal is more to be an amp in itself for the studio or plugging into a pa/mixer/headphone pre.

It was really nice to see how much you enjoyed playing through it, the last time I checked isn't guitar playing supposed to be a pleasure as well as out and out fun? All of the different reverbs are a bit underwhelming, often no real sustain and I spend ridiculous amounts of time tweaking tones. Would rather just play you know? Listening to this Dream 65 was a little like going on a Fender history tour. It really covered a lot of time that Fender's been doing stuff. I heard a lot of sounds that I've enjoyed over the last 50 years.
    The Woodrow takes you back another 10 years.
    The Ruby covers your Kinks, Stones, Beatles, T-Rex territory... you know, if you like that kind of thing.

      I use it with the Moon fuzz which works great. Darkside and this could make a slick mini rig potentially! I did try my actual univibe and had a hard time because the high peaks hitting it didn't compress right. That's the only thing it hasn't liked so far. Also has been a struggle getting tones with Gibson explorer but I'm not use to driving pickups that powerful.

    Man, that Jazzmaster really DOES sound great in a clean setting, doesn’t it? You can definitely hear when you finger it sloppy and the frets buzz (and I don’t mean an electrical buzz of any kind). Sounds just like my hot-Rodded (by a stellar Luthier) M.I.M. 1999 Strat, plugged into the actual amp. And the humbuckers? Direct hit! Your D.I. setup is the next best thing to being somewhere. And you’re 100% right about the first pedal. You’d swear it was an impossibly quiet (no noise) blackface Fender ‘65 Super Reverb amp - just like the real one IN 1965 sounded. So whoever “voiced” this pedal knew precisely what they were shooting for, and hit the bull’s-eye throughout. The trouble is, if it says “UA” on it, it’s priced at roughly DOUBLE what I’d pay for it. It’s just like the 1176 compressor/limiter. For the price of ONE UA 1176, I got TWO of Warm Audio’s version of the device. Warm does a TERRIFIC job with their versions of equipment - I have 50 years of experience with the UA 1176, and Warm’s version is an exact duplicate of it. I’ll probably buy one of these pedals… when Warm Audio makes one. The “Ruby” and the “Woodrow” pedals kick butt (the room simulations are right on the money) as much as the “Dream” does, especially when you pulled out the Tele toward the end. I would have liked to hear the Tele through the “Dream”, though. All in all, KILLER job on this review!

    A UA rep wrote on a forum that you could connect headphones to this pedal by just sticking a Y cable in the outputs. It'd be awesome if you could check out if that works fine, and then either post here or make a short vid about it.

    • @onionheadguy7094
      @onionheadguy7094 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      399 is a lot for a pedal but relatively it's fairly priced along with the competition. The strymon iridium, boss ir 200 and the walrus audio acs1 are all 399, with the "cheaper" option being the nux amp academy. These prices are not so bad considering they are potentially replacing axfx and Kemper units that go for 1000+ used.

  • @gordonlewis7570
    @gordonlewis7570 ปีที่แล้ว

    Although I enjoyed the music, tones, and explanations, it would help if the reviewer had been more explicit about the signal chain he was using. It wasn't clear whether he was playing the pedal direct to a DAW or using the pedal in-between the guitar and some other amplifier with its own preamp, power amp, and speaker. If the latter, then it would help to know what amp and speaker were and how the amp was set. For the benefit of any newbies, the UA Dream 65 is not the type of amp that can power a speaker cabinet; it's a pedal that >simulates< the sounds of an amp connected to a speaker cabinet.
