hey Erica! @nycknifelife here, I for one am glad you use your gear. After watching your videos and reviews I've found a certain level of reassurance to use my more expensive knives if that makes sense. I don't do the work you do. However I work in marketing in NYC and i find myself using my knives almost all the time, while before they'd just sit in my pockets and id use my leatherman haha.

Definitely love it. I think I fall into both camps. Lighter use on my artsy customs, but my arius and similarly priced knives have been used in home projects to cut through plaster and drywall and the likes. And camping with feathersticking.

I totally agree. Problem is not a ton of people have knife using jobs or any land to play around on. Before you buy that knife you might need around a million for some land. I’m fortunate enough to have woods to play around in and nice Knives to play with. I lent my dad a Strider SMF for a few months and he used it for a bunch of nasty jobs and left it hard used and dirt behind his truck seat in the tool boxes. The Spa fixed it right up

Dig the channel and the idea of encouraging people to use their knives and gear, but the UYS ideology is such a false dilemma. Fair to say, on average, the folks in the online/IG knife community don't use their knives and tools in the same way. That being said, different people care about different things, and more importantly people don't have the same requirements of their tools in their day to day lives, and there doesn't have to be anything wrong with that. If the average EDC enthusiast cuts boxes and tape and fidgets with their knife, their experience in a review is useful to other individuals who would also have the same requirements from their knife and don't care as much about how many 2x4s it can hack into before chipping or rolling the edge; most of us city dwellers don't need to skin rabbits too often either :P Reviews are generally all about subjective user experience, and you can't invalidate anyone's experience, you just find the reviewers who have lives similar to your own, people who's experience with a knife or tool is most likely to match your own. Even your videos are far from empirical performance testing, just more subjective user experience. No need to cast aspersions at people for not living their lives and appreciating their luxury goods the same way as anyone else; knives bring enjoyment to a lot of different people in a lot of different ways; makes this a more diverse and inclusive community.

I don’t thrash my knives much, but as a construction professional (certified welding inspector and certified commercial building inspector) I sure beat the hell out of expensive Thorogood boots, streamlight flashlights (only brand I buy), and very expensive specialty tools and gauges I need to do my work. I use my knives when the opportunity presents itself, but I don’t go looking for ways to beat them up. I would rather use a screwdriver to pry than say, a Sebenza. To each their own, but I think we can all agree that unscuffed Red Wings and untorn Carharrts with no paint stains are just a travesty. EDIT: I completely agree with what you said about “reviewers”. If you haven’t taken an item to it’s reasonable limits (or higher) then your review is mainly a first impression. I wouldn’t buy a tool based on a desktop review with a pristine, never used copy of said tool as the centerpiece. 👍

First off, I like collecting, but also like using. A great example was a buck vantage in s30v. Uneven bevel grind, riveted construction of the liners, t6 screws throughout, wildly off center, blade rubbed on the liners, bad lock bar access, stiff lockbar, inconsistent lockup at first etc.
From a collectors mindset, this is a dumpster fire for what I payed.
From a user perspective, it was solid once broken in, had a comfortable handle, and I beat on it without worry. Had it for about a year then lost it at my job. One of the worst quality controlled knives I’ve run across, but I miss it for its utility

    • @1980JPA
      @1980JPA 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Same experience with my Gerber fastball. (Original, not cleaver) Horrible QC but awesome work carry. Bad uneven grind, impossible detent, clip screw that was stripped from factory and threadlocked in. Most was fixable though I shouldn't have had to put so much work into into new knife. Though (like your Buck) it wasn't the cheapest knife, I don't mind thrashing on it. The S30v has great edge holding properties and the blade geometry is made for work. I'm definitely getting my money's worth out of it.

Your "Use Your Shit" videos are the reason I subscribed to your channel. It was such a pleasant change to see someone that actually uses their knives and not just another accumulator (every week just showing more new knives, but never really using any of them). I will admit tho that I too went thru a stage when I didn't want scratch up my new knife, but with age that passed and I thought...why the hell am I trying to keep these things mint? I'm not perfect, why should my knives be....USE THE DAMN THING! and enjoy it.

Interesting point. When l ordered my Inkosi, l purposely bought the plain version so l would not be afraid to beat it up. l was worried that if l bought an extra fancy version, that it might turn into a safe queen.
There are no safe queens in our gun safe. l use all of my tools hard for work, EDC, hunting or competing. l do maintain them and l try not to abuse beyond what they were design for.
l know numerous ladies who EDC and beat the crap out their gear and none of them have long finger nails lol. They all hunt, shoot and compete with the best of them too.

I have a question for you: have you tried differential sharpening?Differential sharpening is the name a gave to the new trend in sharpening for working and bushcraft knives. It consists in sharpening. One side with lower grit and the other side with higher grit. Some say that they get a toothy edge and a slicing edge at the same time.
On another subject, I am convinced that there must be a way to sharpen MagnaCut to your liking and to get it more toothy. Maybe the way is to go against all ways and to apply some pressure (arguably too much) while sharpening. For my part, I was happy with your comment about MagnaCut as I am waiting for a knife in that steel and I need the opposite of a toothy blade because I like to carve and leave the wood as it is without any sanding. A smooth and sharp blade will leave a shiny wood as the fibre of the wood is cut rather than tears apart. I like when you are talking about the way a steel feels and would like you to include that in even more of your videos. Thanks for your great job!

The “reviewers” that crack me up the most are the ones who open up a package, handle the knife for the first time & talk about “hot spots”.
I take all online reviewers with a grain of salt because everyone’s opinion is just that - an opinion. I admit to being a collector and photographer for the most part. Taking pics of lots of things has been a hobby since I was a kid & that was a long time ago. When I was younger & more able, I did use my gear a lot more even breaking a lot of things along the way.
The people I know who actually use their knives & gear the most are folks who don’t have time for documenting what they do. Their opinions are worthy of respect but the scope of their exposure to a variety of brands and models tends to be limited. I know a guy who’ll swear by his Buck 110 as “the best” but he sharpens it once a week until he wears it out when he simply gets another of the same. So while his opinion about the model & brand is well founded, it’s also based on a very narrow exposure to what’s available at the hardware store.
That’s where your channel strikes a nice (& necessary) balance. Not only do you use your fucking shit, you also have handled a lot of brands & models.

Love the "use your shit" attitude. I'm a remodeling contractor and not one of my knives doesn't get used regularly. Granted some are for work and some are for evening and weekend edc (intended use case), but ALL get used regularly. These knives like Spyderco, Emerson, Chris Reeve, ect. are all specifically built for use and I intend to get every dollar's worth out of them. The work I did to get those dollars was damn hard work, so after I've spent them, the gear better be able hang with me while I do what I love everyday. It kills me when people flex over a $200 pair of Jordans and get mad when they crease. When I have to spend that every 8 months just to have my feet sufficiently covered for work. I love your attitude with this. I have a hard time trusting reviews when I'm trying to find whether that specific gear can hang with me throughout my day. A "review" should only be after a few weeks of use. Most reviewers in our community do actually keep to that and call anything else a "first impressions" vid, or an overview.
There's a place for both types of "reviewer" though. A reviewer that beats it up, and a reviewer that does light edc carry for a month. Because there is that same range of consumer also. We just have to pick and choose the reviewer according to the information we're trying to learn. Shabazz doesn't go to work and beat up his knife like you and I, but he still carries the knife extensively before review, knows more about the actual manufacture technics and features than I'll ever know, and from that he can reliably extrapolate the toughness of a knife. He does great "features, construction and light use" reviews. And has that absolute necessary quality (that I see in you also) of not giving a flying F what anyone thinks about his impression of the gear. There's a niche for everyone, but I know where I'm coming if I want to know if my titanium prybar will last a month at my job. That would be your channel. Keep up the great work.

Well you hit it spot on about several things! Couldn't agree with you more about most knife reviewers but I take all reviews with a grain of salt. Redwings suck, Danners suck, my feet don't like boots so they all suck, LOL.
Olights suck as well as all the others with 15 modes, I just want a bright light to turn on and off without thinking about it or programming it. I also worry that knife reviewers are changing the way people design knives, such as finger choils, front flippers, and gaudy finger holes for deployment. Most of them hate a knife that forces your hand into a certain position but they all love finger choils and say this is where I live when holding a knife with a finger choil, a finger choil pretty much forces you to use the knife with your finger right next to the sharpened edge 🤷
I could keep going but I'll stop 🛑

Hey E! Totally agree with you! A knife is a tool, regardless of price. It’s not something you keep in a vault and take out when you want to take a photo. Rock on sis!

This feels kinda like a soap box speech. I respect you as a creator, a member of this community, and as a person. However this kinda felt like you wanted to shit on people who pose as users but aren't. While it's annoying sometimes as "collectibles" or just pocket dump items, that is that person's prerogative. I never saw the use in judging other peoples carries or what they deem themselves. Hard users, use your shit or not, both sides saying the same thing back and forth to each other is not helpful or moves the EDC community forward, feels more backwards to me, just let people spend their money how they deem, just know they'll never feel the true satisfaction of carrying and using items to their fullest extent. ALSO I've been checking out the
Danner boots at work, they look very nice and seem to have pretty good reviews.

I am shitting on them because that is the truth. 🤣 If you are being fake- and seducing people into buying a product by saying YOU have used it and it’s incredible and they should use it too- YOU are a PROBLEM. YOU are being shit on at my soap box speech. Because you are being false, manipulative, and poorly impacting a community I am passionate about. Guess what happens when that leaks into the community? People like Slicey Dicey steal your money and run because you trusted him. You are wrong and I am sorry that my truth grinds your gears. Bless up!!!!!🙏🏼💕🙏🏼

@@ericasedc i guess i’m more talking about on the FB groups where someone is like “that knife is pristine no use, why buy *insert price* if not use it” not so much slicey dicey, fuck him for the shit he did, if someone is ENDORSING a product and saying that it’s great while not testing or using it, that’s shitty. but i’m talking about the people that post photos of PD’s or carries and people will cry about how their knife isn’t used enough. Hope I cleared up my initial statement lol 🤜🏻🤛🏻

@@shura_sa well that has nothing to do with what I said or my movement! I said so many times “there is nothing wrong with collectors or people that don’t use their gear.” I said I was talking about the people who lie and pretend they used it- then convince you to buy it for yourself with a “review”. I get your point, it’s just irrelevant to my video. Because I never said “I am here to shit on you if you collect knives and you don’t abuse the fuck out of them.” Thanks for watching, and the comment! Appreciate the conversation my friend. 💕🙏🏼

Everyone, including you, justifies their motivations and positions. If someone wants to collect, to inspect and admire the workmanship, who gives a shit. If someone wants to beat the shit out of their knives because they feel it’s more “real”, who gives a shit. If someone wants to chase and acquire knives as an investment, who gives a shit. You’ll be more convincing of your “realness” if I see a video of you using a $5K knife like you use your Sabenza. See, it’s all subjective.

@@ericasedc also, you seem to imply that because someone doesn’t use a specific knife, their opinion of the design, build, quality and fit & finish has less gravity than someone without an engineering degree who uses their knife?
So, your opinion on a Sabenza has more gravity than an engineer who has used multiple other knives and just purchased an evaluated a Sabenza?
      No fucking way lady.
You need to really think before you speak.

You seem to be confused what the EDC community is all about. "EDC" is about buying a knife just because it matches your watch and your pen. Nobody in the EDC community is buying a knife because they need to cut rope or gut a badger or slice a 40 gallon plastic drum in half. "EDC" is about finding cool looking gear and taking artistic pictures of it, that's all it is. You did not invent using your knives, people have been using their knives for centuries
