Steering is apart of your OT right
No. Standing watch as a lookout and steering is the mandatory 8 hour day. (Split 4 / 4 hours morning and evening.) OT is not mandatory and it will always be deck maintenance (chipping,painting, greasing) EXCEPT mooring the ship is also mandatory OT.
Hey I got a question. I didn’t get accepted into the apprenticeship program. Is there any advice or suggestions you can give to joining this career as entry level?
You can join the union as a C-book and pay for the STCW course out of pocket. Much faster but harder to work your way up figuring things out.
@@northwestsailor526 so your saying instead of going through the program jsut join the union and go through the process that way ?
@@danadams5288 I’d still be trying to get into the SIU Apprentice program since they really pave the road and set the majority of the bricks for you, but if all else fails yes.. there’s the option of paying out of pocket for your STCW courses and joining the union as a C-book
