It was very brave to begin such a complicated strip down, when there is limited information available, well done Phil. Hopefully a replacement gearbox will resolve the issue😊.
Wow, what a mess. This is why top end motors should always have warranty! All Modern engines and gearboxes are so complicated and compact, that when something lets go it is carnage. Good luck with this one Phil, hope a SH gearbox isn’t too tasty 👍😎
No different than any other manufacturer now, it's all down to the price of everything on the car, if money can be saved by buying a cheaper part they will, so you're just paying for the badge. Great series of video on this car Phil.
Just like all manufacturers built using cheap parts that dont last nothing premium about Mercedes Benz apart from the price. You should see their coaches when they go wrong we have had some fun for sure lol.
I think what has caused the damage to the filter housing is by a speed bump, or crashed over a high kerb. The damage has already been done before it reached the salvage, hence it going there in the first place.
I have a 69 plate A180D with the Renault engine. Just passed 102,000 miles and the car snatches when pulling away and there is a terrible rattle from somewhere. Got to take it into MB for investigation as the rattle is quite loud.IWatching your video Phil it might be the DMF. Luckily a lease car so not my problem
The price of parts now and I wonder if that's why it was wrote off.. hard to say what's caused it but we'll done for investigating it Phil. Looking forward to the next one
You've come a long way since that RS5 you sent back. You should have kept it in the corner because I think you've got the balls and skill to tackle it now. Great progress on the channel though
Phil watch all your vids and this one takes the biscuit see like their making cars these day to buy and throw away (buy another one) totally respect your endurance in taking this on can you imagine the people taking this into the Mercedes Dealership and saying fix my car (yes indeed it will be £7000) probably more im an engineer and have tackled many a problem on older cars they were simple compared to this i hope you get this running right and make a profit but good luck to you son its got my attention for sure big up to you phil .
I had a66 plate clio dci automatic that hit a rock, Renault quoted £7000 for a new gearbox, no garage or approved repairer would take it in to give an estimate, insurers finally wrote it off in January and I've now got a manual captur petrol. If anyone sees FL66ZPf it has a full history including timing belt etc in 2022. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who buys the salvage
My Hyundai Kona hybrid box is £8,500 plus vat and fitting.Bought a low milage one for £700, swapped on drive and good as gold but check that gearoil hasn't been drained.
Phil bring your toolbox over to the area your working in.after working in lean management I can say your loosing so much time but more importantly your killing yourself walking back and forth 🇮🇪.p.s another great video
Watch a Kevin Albert Williams vid - the guy takes these off on driveways, fits a new clutch & puts back... using jackstands & his arms.... and does it all again on another car 5 minutes later. :-) Guy is made of iron, but he does put it into perspective,
For ease, MB information states remove the front end and pull the engine and transmission out the front of the vehicle in one go, done several of these due to flywheel issues not really had any transmissions let go on the W177 A class nore the W176. Done well there though.
A car needs the basic things all cars have had for yrs to actually drive and be a working product,it amazes me why all of this other stuff is rammed in there.i guess in the pursuit of fuel economy and they would say refinement its all there but i think this is a nightmare world nowadays.
Have a gearbox place near me they must have half a dozen ramps but whenever I go they all full of mercs with boxes out wonder if they prone to problems
maybe it might be an idea to sling the gearbox to a specialist and get a quote
cannot beat its original gearbox
It was very brave to begin such a complicated strip down, when there is limited information available, well done Phil.

Well done Phil -The majority of garages wouldn’t take that on 👍🏻

You are very clever and very methodical, well done !
Nice project, go for the 9k mile gearbox if in budget

Good disassembly vid Lad.. Great content. Look forward to it going back together.. Top job.👌

I would get the advice of a gearbox specialist if they say gearbox is fine then just get the broken parts.
Crazy what’s being written off now
I admire your skill and determination to complete jobs like that Phil, your a very brave man! ✊👍
The price of parts now and I wonder if that's why it was wrote off.. hard to say what's caused it but we'll done for investigating it Phil. Looking forward to the next one
Wouldn’t it have been Easier to drop complete engine gearbox and suspension jj😂😂😂😂
Keep up the good work
Good video Phil - good luck in finding spares for that one although lots of choice on the bay,
that's a merc quality right there... only 86k km
Never seen a gearbox do that before, someone has definitely been traffic light Grand Prix daily 😅😅😅
Also it has only 83xxx km on it and the brake disc looks like it needs replacing. Is driving quite hard
Great detective work Phil, and good luck and hope all ends well.
you saw you did you will conquer phil
Those bits won't be chep😮

Ouch! Is there an option for an exchange gearbox, Phil?

I'm all good mate, videos will return very soon just having a break 👍
Well done nice work. 👍
Looks a big job phil

Id say you'd get away without a gearbox if you can get a new seal for the clutch pack cover. Anyway good luck with getting it back together.
Big gamble as its unknown how long it was driven without gearbox oil
Phil bring your toolbox over to the area your working in.after working in lean management I can say your loosing so much time but more importantly your killing yourself walking back and forth 🇮🇪.p.s another great video
Not sure about the gearbox ……but it’s a hell of a messy floor mate! 😂
😁
What happened to simple 🙈👍
Wow 👌 big job but you are smashing it 👏 💪
Great video mate
Great content & very interesting 👍
Just an oil change they said......easy fix they said.....great vid tho

… and won’t touch dual clutch or DSG boxes 🤣
@@daveawhittle Sounds sensible to me. :-) I wouldn't either.
Agree
Really? Using wood chisels on a Merc !
If it Works it Works

Hi phil,an extremely big job.expensive parts too
There is no need for all that oil on the floor goes to show the type of job you do
Cant make an omelette without cracking a few eggs comes to mind
Do they have launch control ? anyone know
God prob 10 grand too fix 🤢
Inspector Clouseau solves the mystery....

Can’t you have the gearbox refurbished ? Or even looked at by a gearbox specialist ?
What a mess , dual mass flywheel crap. Solid lightened flywheels only for me
A tool trolley would be handy
Send it away for repair?
It'll all be OK in the end - if it's not OK, then it's not the end...
Are they still using Renault gearboxes?
It's a German Getrag designed unit.
Sounds very expensive even second hand
22:10 all that crap
Its a big lump
Hello mate
Well mercs, bmtroubleyou, fords and all french and british cars are money pits
They used to be quality cars not anymore.
Never buy a Merc without decent warranty, they fall apart after three years
I'm back
I don't believe it
