I had a 1978 Starlet bought in St Barts in 1982 for $1000. It was a bit tired. Used to be a taxi. But it ran for YEARS afterwards. We humped it up on a wood boat island freighter and took it to St Maarten a few miles away where it ran all over the Dutch and French side. Five speed manual. VERY quick because it weighed almost nothing.
Problems mostly with exhaust piping due to rust and the car being fairly low on a rugged island terrain. I visited the same guy with a co2 welder all the time.
And one water pump. That was all it ever needed. Oh, and all the crappy cheap used tires I could find.

A perfect day, drag racing with the family. The only thing better is if Rocky was there too. It's a shame that so many of the strips are closing. Most young people just aren't interested. The don't know what there missing.

I drove a stock Starlet back in 95 , lifters a little noisy , but got incredibly good gas mileage, paid $568 at a sealed bid sale at a new car store

It's a shame to sacrifice the potential of this car as a classic, high mileage commuter for an utterly impractical purpose, though I see you sold it and I guess that might have some practical purpose, plus the car is so small that it might not hold groceries or tools that it might need to hold for errands. Was it originally RWD? If so, I guess there may be plenty of older FWD commuters now, making the little RWD cars more available to race; though the true classics are still RWD.
You can always race efficient cars in efficient classes, which often saves tires in addition to gas.

Josh I am English and i really don't get how drag racing is so popular in the states. It lacks skill Jeopardy and duration. Who can go the fastest over a quarter of a mile seems like the most boring sport ever. Surely racing around a track or through a forest would be far more exciting.
Aren't you the guys that ride horses blowing a horn while your dogs chase a fox or some such. I can see where that would take skill Jeopardy and duration. Nope, I really can't. 🤨

To begin with only very wealthy dicheads can afford to go fox hunting but if that's your criteria of difficulty, Riding a galloping horse jumping fences and blowing a silly horn seems to me to be far more difficult than driving a car for a quarter of a mile in a straight line. Now I do know that the average American can't count to twenty without first removing his shoes, but even for you it seems to lack a little difficulty and skill.
