    I have been watching your videos for about 6 months, and I could not figure out what it was that really set your videos so far apart from all the others then the other day watching some of your older vids it hit me. Your channel is a modern-day Andy Griffith show. Clean, funny, family safe, good morals, you all treat each other good. The way you work together have fun, it is all just such a pleasure to watch.

    🔧 The reason for the Extreme vibration is the slime you had in the Casings.. you should never have liquid of any kind in there unless it's to get you home or in a lawn Tractor 🚜
    Even if you never balance your casings at least keep them dry inside 👍

    Josh, a few things that may help...if it's too rich at idle and part throttle, the methanol blow-by can significantly dilute the oil and by the looks of the oil when you drained the pan, I'll bet there was some methanol mixed in that oil. On WOT you may have been too lean which would help to explain the combustion chamber damage. I couldn't tell what kind of PCV system you had, but it might be good to use the large base port on both carbs with dual PCV valves and dual breather elements on each valve cover to help evacuate blow-by. I would also definitely take some time to tune ignition and fuel-air across all RPM's. Hypereutectic pistons will not tolerate too much ignition advance because of the brittle alloy so I would go conservative with timing advance since you don't have an active knock-sensor/ignition retard system. Good Luck!

    Josh, you need to put a Nader style shutoff valve under the hood. You need to shut the valve off and run the motor out of fuel. Racing alcohol will go past the rings. I used to run circle track cars and the fuel gets milky really easy.
    Also you have to run at least -8 fuel line. If you are running 3/8 line, you are not feeding enough fuel. You burn twice as much fuel than gasoline. I used to run a single 750 carb on a 13:1 406 sbc and I believe I had like .140 jets.

  • @tomserna6722
    @tomserna6722 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    My personal prognosis is it went lean on one carb, probably due to the bowls running dry (looks like it was the rear one). Maybe you should go to a swirlpot design with two holley blues sucking off that and a separate reg for each carb with a return system rather than a deadhead setup..

  • @joellekarma
    @joellekarma ปีที่แล้ว +8

    You need to remove all the bearing including the cam bearings and have that block cleaned out for there is now metal particles in every part of that engine. and mic the crank have it polished. This is why I never ran alcohol in my engines. buy good racing fuel. I wish you the best on the rebuild of this engine.

    Might build her little more in the loose side this time. Think they tighten up running like that for that long. That tunnel Ram is a barrel for every cylinder. Might do some individual tuning, depending the top. 🤔 might run it 15, then 30 , and work your way up and tune as you go. You’ve burned the cadmium off all of them, looks like lean, and like you said, your going for so long, just keeps getting hotter. Think you did pretty awesome considering the time frame lol. She got put right together and was gone smoking tires, right quick! You’ll get her figured!

    Josh, My family has a background in truck and tractor pulling. We run methanol in our puller. My Dad and I watched your breakdown video together and had a few ideas for you. For a methanol setup expect to run twice as much fuel compared to gasoline. Gasoline is 14 to 1 air fuel ratio and methanol is 7 to 1. We'd recommend using forged pistons and maybe inconel exhaust valves. The 360 the heads are limited , consider a 440 if possible. Also methanol always gets in the oil, get used to changing the oil after every event this is normal. Consider cutting about 12" to 15" off of the headers, that should bring up the R's.

    With 13.5 compression ratio and a lean mixture, it should have blown sky high.
    A hemi may tolerate that a little longer,a but never a wedge.
    You may want to try 10.5 to one next time, richen it up, and please have the engine finally balanced.
    Running wide open with an unbalanced engine is a formula for chaos!

      Yeah this was what I think it was. The vibrations from the unbalanced assembly at high speed would have been sending shockwaves through the engine when running over 5k. Something was going to fail. And if a carb was lean, a little heat, with some extra vibration that causes more heat... That machine shop, couldn’t get around to balancing a crank, boy they deserve a special place….

    The oil sprayed everywhere was what I was talking about that you need catch cans for the breathers so it won't as you're spinning around/at high rpm. When methanol goes lean it will burn hot.. Again, I said it in a previous comment, that's down to the floats being that angle when you're spinning around.. one side is getting flooded while the other side of the carb/engine goes lean. Not having had that engine on the dyno or having EGT sensors in each runner is part of what killed it.. You have no clue where the fuel is going. If you watch Engine Masters they often have to have a different jet at each corner of each carb with tunnel rams because they distribute fuel in weird ways. EFI really is SOOOO much better when messing with methanol or nitromethane. You need to be able to tune each cylinder separately and know exactly what's going into each hole. The valve cracking could've just been down to a manufacturing defect.
    A piece of advice, when you have a blown up engine, don't turn it over on the stand.. take the pan off the way it sits, when you flip it over you're just dumping any pieces of metal into the engine.
    Your biggest problem is the simplest to fix.. you don't have a shelf full of broken parts.. You HAVE to have a shrine for Tributes to the Gods of Speed. Learn from Burt Munro. (if you haven't ever watched World's Fastest Indian you're missing out.)

    @36:00 if you smear a really light coat of grease all over your paper gaskets they're a lot more likely to come off whole and be reusable, do it with all of my builds and never had sealing issues or anything from it.
    P.s. That looks to me like it's damage from both pre-ignition (pitted pistons) and detonation (melted plugs blown apart valves/piston) , probably brought on by being too lean on such a high compression build and/or possibly just not cold enough plugs.

    • @stevenbelue5496
      @stevenbelue5496 ปีที่แล้ว

      Detonation usually leaves pitting and pre-ignition usually melts. My guess is maybe timing was on the edge, coupled with a lean condition increased the burn rate causing extreme cyl temps, a pressure spike and detonation. It's hard to say because there are symptoms of detonation and pre-ignition,.the lean condition could cause hot spots that pre-ignited.

    I think this may be a case where EFI would be the way to go, or drop the compression to 11:1 and go back to race gas. Methanol is great as long as you have a LOT of it. It definitely went lean up on the pipe, even if it was rich down on the idle circuit. I noticed it was spitting some out the pipes almost every time you started it, so maybe check your floats as well and see if one or both carbs are leaking. You really should have a return line off those carbs with a small orifice to keep pressure from building in the fuel system when it's warm and not running. That will also insure that the fuel coming into the carbs stays fairly cool. Even so, an ice-filled 'cold can' is a good idea to keep your methanol chilled as much as possible before it hits the carbs.😉

    Lost two engines with the same exact kinda damage, all be it was in an import under boost. But
    Ended up needing to have the geometry of the the combustion chamber changed to help scavenge the heat from combustion more efficiently. It would start to preignite and detonate under high rpm and boost from the heat building up. Ran inconel exhaust valves, stainless intake valves, and if memory serves 2 steps colder plugs. Put a thermocouple in each exhaust runner to monitor temps in real time. Both times bottom end was salvageable just needed a hone and pistons after being cleaned. Trashed the head though. Sorry to see it happen to y’all. Love the channel.

      I think it could have been a machining problem. Heat may have done some damage but what caused it? Did you have the engine balanced? The smallest vibration get amplified when you step on it and can tear an engine apart in a short period of time. Heat would begin to build up causing more damage.

    I would install an AIR TO FUEL RATIO sensor with gauge and danger zone light. Is there a way you could electronically reduce the engine revolutions if the engine fuel system senses a about to go lean condition? Or a way to enrich the fuel ratio-supply at the highest engine revs? I think that would protect the engine. Maybe convert to a single carburetor? Anyway good on you to inspect what went wrong and learn from it. You and your family will be the next Edelbrocks. Keep tuning and keep racing! Well done Sleeperdude and family and Rocky!!

    Keep an eye out for a 1967 dodge 318 engine. They came from the factory with a forged steel crankshaft. Bore it to 4" and use 1969 340 pistons and rods. Have it balance and build it from there. Run it on high test gas and you will have an excellent burnout engine at a reasonable price.

    Ok, few things here, mount your gauges where you can see them, run a t-stat of about 180, put temp sensors on the exhaust pipes, switch to marine style spark plugs and open the jets. Quick way to know if the fuel mix is good is if the exhaust makes your eyes sting like you have soap in them. Ask some circle track racers what they do to set up their engines.

    Melted pistons I agree it has to be a lean issue with the methanol.
    I had a friend who used aircraft fuel and for a 5 gallon jug he used type F transmission fluid for lubrication purposes he would add fluid till the fuel turned colors. I don’t know if this would help you in this situation but I would think u needed more lubricant in your fuel and richen your fuel mixture.
    To be on the safe side I’d recommend forged pistons.

      Balance the rotating assembly!

    • @DavidSmith-ss1cg
      @DavidSmith-ss1cg ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bradpaynter6719 - I think so too! I thought that you had done that already - Balance the entire reciprocating assembly(including pistons, rods, caps and the crank) is the easiest racing trick for an engine re-builder to do by themself(except crankshafts) and is probably the reason your piston damage is spread out unevenly. If you try to pinpoint diagnose any ONE problem that blew up Gremmy, you may be in for a lot of frustration; but if you balance ALL the parts of your reciprocating mass to within a tenth of a gram(it's been 40 years since I balanced my 340 'Cuda engine; you might be able to match them closer), you should have LOTS less engines blown up. I never discovered my top end - my 'cuda would go to the "P" in MPH on the speedometer - and I NEVER blew it up.
      That's what all those straight sections are on those parts; the smooth areas that look like bars or blocks. They are extra material, DESIGNED for you to grind away, to balance the weight of all of the reciprocating items. Remember the lyrics for "Little Deuce Coupe," by the Beach Boys - where it said, "She's balanced and relieved, and she's stroked and bored, she'll do a hundred forty in the top end, floored?" The FIRST word of description of the "magic Hot-Rod Tricks" is Balanced.

    • @bradpaynter6719
      @bradpaynter6719 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave Smith, not my engine build, however, I concur with your statements regarding balancing. I do my own rods, pistons, etc. When I balance parts I get them down to less than a tenth of a gram for the full set of pistons and rods. My goal is to always have the entire assembly below 1 gram total out. Takes longer but there are the rewards of a very smooth running engine. The pistons in this case should be forged! I’d also go with coated bearings for protection at sustained high rpm’s. I too once had a 340 4spd Dart GTS, we’ll built! They’re great engines!

      👍👌👏 Yes, you are absolutely right. Additionally: Trailer rims don't sit centered enough on the brake drums. Because usually the hole in the trailer rim is bigger than the hub. At least that's the way it is in Germany. And from the looks of it, it's similar in North America.
      2) Sleeperdude mentioned a lot of vibrations while doing the burnout. This definitely helped to destroy the engine. Therefore the DIY drive shaft must be checked and balanced. So should the crankshaft!
