The $6 Three Picket Planter - Low Cost High Profit - Make Money Woodworking

  • A new larger planter box design based on the insanely popular original! In this video, I will be teaching you step-by-step how to build this awesome planter by using only 3 fence pickets! In my area right now pine pickets are $1.98 each and the cedar pickets have come down to $3.37. That means that you can make these beautiful planters for around $6 in the material. I've received countless success stories from people building and selling tons of the picket planters of each design so make sure to check them out! I'll link the other planter designs below.

This channel has to be one of only a few no BS channels that actually teaches you something. The best part of your channel is not the tips you give us or the project ideas you deliver but the mindset you teach which is by far the most valuable aspect of making money from this craft.

I appreciate that! Our mind is one of the biggest challenges when we are creators/makers. I know for me personally I’ve used woodworking as a type of outlet for many years. It is my therapy and I hope others can use it in that way too.

After making the larger version of this multiple times, I came up with a hack to get perfect trim and side heights. The trim 45 degree cut with a 7 degree bevel was an issue for me, because my chop saw doesn’t bevel. I also would get sides that didn’t always match up in height, so I would need to sand a bit to get the trim to lay flat. To solve both issues, I used my table saw. Once you make the frames, take them to the table saw and trim the top of each frame with a 7 degree bevel. This insures your sides are equal heights and your trim lays flat.

As they used to say in my old neighborhood: "You better tell somebody!!!". I like making these because they're easy to make and in the hope one day I would sell them. But today, while I was working on some, a lady stopped in front of my house and practically bought one off the workbench! She said she's going to paint it pink. Thanks, Mister Matt!!!

I'm not a woodworker but have always had an interest. I've been watching your videos and you break things down very well for a beginner, so I felt i could give it a try. I tried the farmhouse design - made 4 getting the feel for things, turned out OK (i think i will use them for Mothers Day gift) but learned alot. I then moved on to this style to try, I made two and sold them before they were complete. I wasn't intending to sell them as was using them to learn, I just happened to be in the garage on the phone when my friend asked what i was doing, i snapped a picture and sent it to him and said working on these. 2 days later he texted said he showed the pic to his wife and she wanted to buy them. Sold, delivering Monday. Now trying to decide on what i do next.

Thanks for all the great content. I always get super excited when I see you put out a new video. So many woodworkers are switching over to the What Tools you must have and what you need before you start wood working. I love that you put out incredible content on how to build and how to start a woodworking business without having to make coffee tables and big furniture. How long would you say it takes you to make one of these? And how would you recommend changing up the way you build to mass produce? Or do you recommend only doing one at a time.

Just wanted to say I enjoy your videos. I've watched the original 3 picket planter too many times to count just to make notes and build one. Now, this is my, who knows how many times, watching this, making notes checking them twice and I JUST noticed at 11:36 that you've made what would appear to be one side with 4 panels instead of 6. Which, I though, hey, that's cool, another alternative/mod! is that an optical illusion? If not, it's one mod I'll probably make anyhow just so it's that many less cuts!
Anyhow, really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!

First, I’ll say I love your videos! The inspiration and the go get them attitude is what keeps me watching. For this particular build, I cut out the parts in your list in the order that you listed them and I think that’s where I made a mistake. I ended up with some scrap and not enough to make the entire project out of three boards so I had to go to a fourth board to complete it. You didn’t mention it in the comments, nor did you mention it in the video but perhaps they should’ve been cut in longest to shortest order and that would’ve prevented me from having to go to a fourth board?

There are a lot of planter designs out there and I think this is the best. The taper really stands out from the square ones.
I made 2 for my wife and thought I’d make some more to sell. I sold 7 like this and 6 bigger ones.
Wood costs more in my area, but I managed to make a profit of about $25 each.
    Thanks for the motivation!

6:22 You can also predrill the board you drive the screw into using a long narrow drill to avoid splitting.

In reference to the top trim, if youll flip the board from top to bottom as opposed to flipping left to right you can cut the 45 on the other end of the board and not have to worry about changing the bevel to the opposite side of the saw. Your board will now be on the opposite side of the saw blade then it was was for the first cut. Why change the bevel again if you dont have to.?, Set up the saw once and leave it. As mentioned this is only referenced to the top trim, just an idea, but great build I'm gonna give her a go. Thanks for the great videos.

I’ll post pics on brag board of my take on your planter. I’m using old reclaimed lathe, got for free, painted white for the side panel fill pieces. This cuts my cost almost in half for each planter. Using roughly 1 1/2 pickets for the build. And they look great in cedar with the white lathe inserts!

Just like gigs said, don’t go hog wild on tools right out of the gate! First tools that will be used almost every time you build are your drill and impact. Get those brand new during a decent sell. After that, find you a circular saw second hand or new, as long as it is within your budget. Speed square and a tape measure. These items will make you dangerous and ready to build darn near anything! As your skills progress and begin adding more tools and goodies. I have been tearing up wood now for a few years and I started out with the bare minimum, now I pretty well have a full on wood working shop that is still ever growing!
Matthew, love your videos. I enjoy these builds and will adding some of these to my arsenal for our upcoming vendor market in April!

tape measure, circular saw, wood glue, screw driver, speed square. that's about the minimum you'll need.
but to add to that to make it a little more comfortable: kreg accu-cut (turns circular saw into a track saw), 2 saw horses, drill, pocket hole jig (I literally just bought the cheapest kreg one and it's 10x faster than glue and clamps).
upgrades from those 2 list are miter saw, table saw, work bench, brad nailer.
All of the tools could be purchased used from pawn shops, goodwill, harbor freight. I've read Wen has some decent new tools that are budget priced but I haven't used any.

I was inspired by you and built a elevated raised bed planter made out of cedar fence pickets.

I'm new to woodworking and this is my favorite channel. I bought a few starter tools. Dewalt table saw, miter saw and orbital sander. Skil circular saw. Pocket hole jig. Already owned a Bosch drill and my least favorite tool a Ryobi jigsaw.

This is my first TH-cam subscription. Great instructional video. Easy to follow and replicate. Made 5 of these this weekend. The first one with 1x cedar boards and the other 4 from cedar pickets. The pickets were the thinner ones so I had to predrill where the pocket screws were going to go in to prevent splitting. The 1" pin heads worked great after that. I threw together a quick jig to help keep the A-frame pieces in place while screwing them together. Well worth the 5 minutes it took. Everything worked out great. The planters look fabulous and are extremely sturdy. I scaled the plans down an inch and will probably scale it down a little more to adjust for smaller square pots.
Fun project. Thanks for the video.

You are still my favorite TH-cam channel. I’m a full time lathe turner and I like watching your presentations cuz it’s nice to see wood that is not spinning at 1700 RPM.
