    Double thumbs up to Del from Charlotte NC. Both the video and the plans are terrific. I’m a semi-competent beginner who’s not exactly a natural. The plans were doable but also great for skill-building, and I admit the compound angle cuts were a bit of a struggle for someone who’s not a whiz at spatial relationships. But when I finally got my head around it the victory was sweet. Cannot recommend the plans enough. 😎

      Thank you! I put a ton of time into these plans to make them as comprehensive as possible considering the challenges of depicting 3D concepts in 2D form. I’m glad you liked the plans and were able to build yourself some planters!

    83 years young. Finally getting started in my shop. Started buying tools in the 90's one at a time. (had to work each into the budget). Now almost all my tools are new (slightly used, if at al). I bought the plans, watched the video three times and will start gathering everything. This will be a bit more than the "rustic" birdhouses I've done so far. Thanks for making the plans and the video. Oh yeah, South Georgia, almost to Florida

    Watching all this great videos in how to build cedar planters, it makes it wanna start uploading videos on how I built mine platers out of pallets and only using basic tools, I know it’s a different kind of wood but I’m giving a second chance to wood that for others is scrap but for me is free Gold. Keep the good work all you. 👍

      @ yes I will, is pretty cool how you use all left over board and not scrap them, but check the link below if you ever plan make some out of full boards, or probably you already know, I make one yesterday with whole length boards and it was easy and simple, not much work.

    Very nice video. I like your running commentary. Your find of all that cedar was a once in a lifetime. I am considering using fence pickets for these. Here in SC the fence pickets are about $3 each so it would be an inexpensive project.

    Have you considered adding a base compatible for a pallet jack or fork lift for easy movement/transportation?? I’m guessing these boxes should be 100+ lbs after adding soil and vegetation??

    Question for you when you get time : Can you tell me the reason behind going horizontal with the initial framing instead of vertical? Without paying enough attention to the assembly method I automatically went vertical instead, assembling with #6 x 1 stainless steel screws. Because the trim boards hide these screws, I also decided to screw the trim on with screws from the inside leaving no marks of assembly. What I don't say is I probably assembled and disassembled this thing 4+ times trying to figure out how its done. If there was a way to shoot you a pic or two I'd gladly do it so you could see what I'm talking about. Thanks again for your time and consideration.

    • @dellsdiy
      @dellsdiy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing your build process. There’s really no reason why I started by building each level instead of starting with each side. There’s probably a dozen ways to build this. I found it easiest to build each level then stack them and trim them out. I like your idea of screwing everything in from the back but again I wanted to make a beginners level plan and stacking and nailing was definitely simpler. I’d love to see your project. Feel free to share pics on Instagram or Facebook if interested in sharing

    Can you tell me the purpose of cutting the bevel on the bottoms boards?

    • @dellsdiy
      @dellsdiy  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you don’t cut the bevel on the bottom, the planter will essentially be sitting either on the edge of the boards instead of on the full surface of the edge or if you’re using rubber feet like I did, your rubber feet will be on an angle. That’s because the boards taper in from top to bottom

    Hey, from Lafayette, Louisiana. Can you make videos on taller ones like this

    • @dellsdiy
      @dellsdiy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Making taller ones will be the same exact process but you would add another level of fence picket. Instead of three you would do 4 or 5. The plans will help with that as well since you may need to adjust the planter angle

    Aren't galvanized nails better for a planter?

    • @dellsdiy
      @dellsdiy  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Stainless steel is the best choice for any outdoor application but dipped galvanized are more economical but won’t last forever. Both would be fine for planters

    • @dellsdiy
      @dellsdiy  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It really depends on the market, how many other people are selling planters, etc. typically $50-75 is a sweet spot that I’ve found but have gone higher depending on demand. Have fun building.

    FYI for anyone. You can make feet for the planter out of the stiles. Just leave them longer and it will elevate the planter from the ground. Helps prolong lifetime in avoiding rot. 👍🏾

      How did you get the stiles to become completely flat to the ground? Example .. With the angle set at say 7 degrees the stiles end touching the ground on an end point not flush. Did you cut them back the on-site 7 degrees?
      Tia for your response an thoughts.

    • @dellsdiy

      That’s correct, the edge that touches the ground is also cut to the same angle as the taper used on the whole planter so that it is completely flat to the ground

    • @dellsdiy

      Hi. It’s pretty small. Even though it’s in a three car garage, two of the stalls have cars in them, the last stall has riding lawnmower, snowblower etc leaving me with about 10’x12’ dedicated shop and then I move a bunch of tools (tablesaw, workbench, etc) into the middle car stall when building.

    • @dellsdiy
      @dellsdiy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nancy, I would highly recommend getting a cheap table saw if you want to get into some basic woodworking projects or crafts. But if you’re not comfortable using power tools then I totally understand why you may not be interested.

    • @markb8954
      @markb8954 ปีที่แล้ว

      Projects like this can easily be accomplished w/o a table saw. I recently built a few of these with chop saw to cut the lengths & then bandsaw for the strips. Do you have any saws? Even a portable jig saw or circular saw could be used. Heck, a good old handsaw could work too. Higher end power tools just quicken the process & are usually more accurate. (Depending on your skill level).

    Greeting from Elgin, SC..For everyone else make absolutely certain your lumber is really flat with no bowing or warpage. Those tapered layers will never align properly if not.. I only know this because a little birdie told me. I sold a lot of cedar planters over the past few years, but the price of cedar suddenly skyrocketed.. Only my hairdresser knows when the price drops and I don't even have a hair dresser. Just so you know, don't bother with box store "cedar fence pickets". They're not usually cedar, they're almost always still wet and if you're using a cast iron table saw you'll end up with a rusty cast iron table saw top and they'll warp before you ever get them assembled..

    • @dellsdiy
      @dellsdiy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing. I agree with you to make sure you fry the fence pickets in the sun for a day or two. Usually they will dry out perfectly. Thanks for watching Martino, I hope you stick around for more projects!
