I feel like 1984 is when the 1980’s became “THE 80’s”, so many beloved and classic movies, some of my all-time favorites, one of the best years of Cinema
It’s kind of like mainstream Rock music in the 90s making a *huge* shift overnight once Nirvana’s Nevermind album released.

@@Logan912 That and the dissolution of the USSR began the cultural '90s, with Bill Clinton being sworn in as POTUS on January 20, 1993 and the WTC bombing a month later moving the cultural shift along.
1984 was my golden year. I just turned twelve years old and fondly remember my dear dad as he so often said to me that summer "get out of the bathroom and turn down that boom box, Rod Stewart stinks"! I lost him back in January, cheers pop!!🍺🍺
Probably because he won't upload these on his own channel and we're forced to give channel awesome viewership even though they're run by egotistical bigots that treat their staff/assisoates awfully. Honestly it's a shame brad still associates himself with them
While i truly believe 1982 was a groundbreaking year for 80s movies...84 was indeed the start of a long run of great films that kept going for the rest of the decade
Whenever 1984 is mentioned, Ghostbusters is the only movie that ever comes to mind. I have only loved the song since I was introduced to it during the 3rd grade and now I love the franchise.
Just got through with January and wanted to leave a comment here to thank you for covering this month. A really big year for me (sophomore in high school) and many of these movies laid the foundation for things I'd quote and remember for years to come. Great review Snob!
It's INSANE how many classic blockbuster movies came out in 1984! I turned 5 that year so I'm guessing Hollywood wanted my first lifelong memories to be amazing 🤩
Since the movie is literally called 1984. I bet for the people who were in the movie, Every time it's played it feels like they are stuck in a time loop. A time loop in which every year in 1984.
@@pootispiker2866 They're not the nutter here. Nothing in that comment expresses that something is bad, or that something has been called "1984" because it is unliked, nor would either of these cases apply to the concept of "crying wolf" anyway. Your reply is completely nonsensical, and try as I might I can't even fathom how you managed to reach your conclusion. lol
So glad your back..I think this is one of the best years for film ever..these are the highlight of my year..ttemple of doom is one of my all time classics
From a 95 degree evening to an 82 degree midnight, this was quite a night to spend. I like these '80s film retrospectives from Snob better than his '60s film retrospectives. Makes me wish he'd additionally do '90s film retrospectives instead, but that would take double the time of these retrospectives.
1984 was also an awesome year for music too. Even when Thriller was technically released in 1982, MJ won his 8 Grammys in 1984, also Madonna, Cindy Lauper, Prince and Van Halen and many other bands became super popular. Perhaps the best year in pop music since 1969.
This came out the day me and my girlfriend celebrated our one-month anniversary (despite the fact that we've known eachother for 20 years). Cheers to you, Snob 😊
Video was massive then, too. I distinctly remember laughing with my mates at the C.H.U.D. preview on another video later in the decade. My friend's parents went away every weekend and we watched videos and smoked cigarettes.
This is what movies looked like 40 years ago! I love the different genres. It seems all we have now is superhero films, animated kids movies, and romantic comedies for your mom. I love the diversity of these movies in 1984. Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Karate Kid, etc. my god this year was amazing! My dad was a freshman in high school when all these movies came out. Somebody get me a time machine!!
@@c.w.r.794 there is tons of diversity. People just love focus on what gets the most marketing. There are tons original or interesting content out there. Its just spread over different mediums and harder to find. Something that started in the 80s with vhs and cable tv hitting the market. Everything is the same as it always was. Its just presented differently. Even with the genres you listed you are leaving out horror and action which are both still popular and are finding ways to tweak the genres. Its not as bad as you say. Dramas geared towards people on the older side or more quiet/dialogue heavy have taken the biggest hit. But, they mostly get critical love. With a full marketing team behind them, they still wouldnt do that well.
Wow! I forgot how awesome 1984 was for movies. We watched Nightmare on Elm Street in junior high. I think i watched Johnny Dangerously ever time it came in HBO. Red Dawn was my husband and I's first date. Thanks for the memories Brad. I love these long videos.😊
Great job as always. “Love Streams’” is simultaneously the perfect epilogue to the New Hollywood era that Cassavetes laid roots for with Shadows and Faces and the ancestral gift to the Indie movement that will be inaugurated in an about 5 years.
In regards to the shorter version of Once Upon a Time in America, you are SO not missing much. It is more than a botched job. It cuts the soul and nards. SOUL AND NARDS! We are talking more than just changing it to a linear structure. Important character beats and moments are removed or slimmed down to nothing. We never get to see Noodles and Max meet for the first time. The subplot with the crooked cop in the 1924 scenes is gone. The tense moments are whittled to blink and miss moments which added to the uncomfortable and dark atmosphere of the movie. One of my favorite payoffs is removed where they switch baby tags on a cop to make a decision on the scabs. What they cut is them saying how they don't remember which baby number tag the true tyke holds. And the ambiguity of the ending is stolen. (without spoiling it)Instead of the famous dump truck shot, a sound effect is added to clue the viewer in on what happened to the fate of a character instead of letting the audience be clued in. It makes the Godfather Epic TV edit more forgiving because at least it still tells a raise and fall to power story. Sure, that particular edit does tell Godfather Parts 1 and 2 in chronological order, but it still retains important plot points. Just stick with the European Theatrical edit. Though, the extended director's cut does enhance on some things, so that's worth a look as well.
Once Upon A Time In America is my favourite from 1984. If only the Ladd Company hadn’t completely botched the American release, it really could’ve swept the Oscars. Though I’m not convinced it would ever be a Box Office hit in the film culture of the ‘80s, but oh well. It’s also, incidentally, my favourite film of the decade.
Been patiently waiting for this one, lol. I was born in 86, and grew up on a lot of these movies. I think 1984 was the absolute best year for movies in general. I'm a huge Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones, and Terminator fan too. They just don't make them like this anymore man.
I absolutely love this series (and the sister series Brad is doing with 60s films.) I was born in 1981 so obviously I was too young to see these in the cinema but they were definitely a key element of my childhood on video and TV (I definitely had a crush on Helen Slater's Kara.) What a great year for movies!
Luscious Limda Kerrige in Surf II ❤ Eddie used to live down the street from me. I'd chat him up every time I saw him. He told he made his best money doing Snap, Crackle,Pop voicings. Thanks for all your excellent work in these yearly reviews.

1984 had a lot of bangers that year aside from the obvious ones like Ghostbusters, Temple Of Doom and Gremlins the hidden gems for me were Cloak & Dagger, Runaway, Dreamscape, Making The Grade. If I didn't catch it in theaters then it was either on VHS or The Movie Channel.
I remember watching Tank on cable as a kid, but then a thunderstorm rolled through part way into the movie and knocked our power out. I've never seen the rest of the movie since.
Amadeus was one of my Moms favorite movies. For the longest time she had the old clamshell vhs tapes, one of the only copies she paid full expense for. Also had a copy of Carmen too, don’t remember the shape of the tape forty years later
1984 IN THE HOUSE!!!!!! I've been looking forward to this year since this series started!! And ya dang RIGHT, Elm Street is one of the best of the year!! I've been keeping score for these years for movies because I love his picks! 1980: 12 (possibly more) 1981: 24 (possibly more) 1982: 16 (possibly more) 1983: 28 (possibly more) 1984: 26 (possibly more)
Hey, the Splatter University segment makes me realize how few Troma movies are being mentioned in these retrospectives. No 'First Turn On' or 'Waitress!'? You're slipping, Snob.
Well it's about time. Looking forward to 1985 next year! Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Gremlins, The Muppets Takes Manhattan, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Terminator, This is Spinal Tap and Amadeus, 1984 films I have come across on VHS and DVDs from CeX, Blockbuster Video and hmv
Dunno where you found that "I'm watching my video" tune.🤘 But DAMN !!! that is the most 80s sounding piece of of unmusical, cheapo music 🤪 I've ever heard! And I'm all here for it. 🥳🤣 Great start. 🤞✌🤝
Weird Disney History... Splash Mountain, the classic flume ride at Magic Kingdom, was named by Micheal Eisner, the then CEO of Disney. "Splash" had released, so he decided that Splash had to be in the name for the ride. Does the ride have anything to do with the movie at all? Nope. Was themed to "Song of the South"--now re-themed to "Princess and the Frog."
I was normally left alone at home as a kid and my parents had an HBO subscription. One night, TEACHERS played and since my dad was a teacher himself, I decided to watch it to see what it was all about. The gratuitous topless scene near the end of the film was about the only thing I remember, and the math teacher dying and no one noticing as he just slept the entire day with the assignments listed on the chalk board.

Keep up the good work Brad! These retrospectives are fantastic!
I feel like 1984 is when the 1980’s became “THE 80’s”, so many beloved and classic movies, some of my all-time favorites, one of the best years of Cinema
To an extent, yes
For me, the 80's started in 1983 when 'Inspector Gadget', and 'He-Man' debuted on TV.
The '80s began when Reagan was sworn in as POTUS on January 20, 1981--with the launch of MTV on August 1st moving the cultural shift along.
Over 5 hours of the Snob?! YES PLEASE ❤
1984 was my golden year. I just turned twelve years old and fondly remember my dear dad as he so often said to me that summer "get out of the bathroom and turn down that boom box, Rod Stewart stinks"! I lost him back in January, cheers pop!!🍺🍺
And he was right about Rod Stewart, too! RIP to your pops, brother
I kept saying to myself over and over again "No way this came out in '84 too" while watching this. SO many personal classics dropped!
You can tell 1984 was one of the most eventful years for 80s cinema, when the video on it is 5 hours long.
1985 is also eventful, so much so that 1985 in Film will likely be over 5 1/2 hours long
Cinema Snob is the best side dish of Channel Awesome
Why so many dislikes? Dude has worked a lot to pull this out.
They all must've gotten "Weekend Pass" stuck in their heads.
Fools on them. TH-cam cares more about clicks and retention than they to the like/dislike buttons
How do you even see them?
@@rockingbeat Pretty much every browser has an extension or add-on that can show them. Just search for 'return youtube dislikes' or something similar.
I also agree that other than the cartoon, and the video game, no attempt at A sequel was able to capture the magic of the original.
I’ve been waiting for this video since 2020
Just got through with January and wanted to leave a comment here to thank you for covering this month.
@@TheCommenterDragon the boy who cried wolf. Get a grip
@@pootispiker2866 Did I miss something here..?
@@mokarokas-1727 If you call everything 1984 because you don't like it, people just think of you as a nutter.
@@pootispiker2866 They're not the nutter here. Nothing in that comment expresses that something is bad, or that something has been called "1984" because it is unliked, nor would either of these cases apply to the concept of "crying wolf" anyway. Your reply is completely nonsensical, and try as I might I can't even fathom how you managed to reach your conclusion. lol
@@mokarokas-1727 I'm genuinely glad you're able to authoritatively speak on their behalf.
So glad your back..I think this is one of the best years for film ever..these are the highlight of my year..ttemple of doom is one of my all time classics
Agreed
I know what I'll be doing for the next five hours. Thank you, Cinema Snob.
Can’t wait for 1985 in film, I NEED to hear Brad discuss Clue.
1985's gonna be heavy.
My favorite movies of 1984 are Sixteen Candles & Once Upon a time in America.
@djmexicanodetx2195 both are great
iconic films
Great films!
The Terminator and Repo Man are perfection also!
It was a magical time. Went to see Ghostbuster/Gremlins/The Karate Kid at the drive-in triple feature.
Thank you for the retrospective Cinema Snob!
From a 95 degree evening to an 82 degree midnight, this was quite a night to spend. I like these '80s film retrospectives from Snob better than his '60s film retrospectives. Makes me wish he'd additionally do '90s film retrospectives instead, but that would take double the time of these retrospectives.
First Cinema Snob video I've watched...nobody told me I'd need a Weekend Pass.

LETS GO!! THIS IS MY FAVORTIE SERIES YOU'VE DONE SNOB!
This series is amazing! Love to learn more of film! Ghostbusters is My favorite of the year! 👻
It was a legendary film in a legendary eyar for film
I graduated in 1985, ahhhhh good times good times 😊. Also love me a Snob-Athon!!!!!! 🎉
5 hours, oh boy. I’ll be saving this for later
My birth year! I love these year deep dives! Thanks for all your hard work, Brad!
I’ll never finish this review because I keep going to watch all the movies I forgot about when you mention them lol. BANZAI!
Congratulations
4:52:00 I legit waited this entire video for you to spotlight Johnny Dangerously. That is a classic

5 hours of Cinema Snob?! I definitely need this right now!😃
Five hours of a Brad "In Film" episode? Yes, please.
I really wish I was a teenager in the 1980s. I'd be at the theatre every Friday and in 1984 and 85 I would see so many great films!!
Oh we did, lol! I was a high schooler in 1984 and I spent most of my allowance on theater tickets and gas 🎉
@ashurmom2969 oh man that sounds so awesome!!
Video was massive then, too. I distinctly remember laughing with my mates at the C.H.U.D. preview on another video later in the decade. My friend's parents went away every weekend and we watched videos and smoked cigarettes.
Supergirl was obviously the best I mean how could you beat the most romantic scene in cinama flying while carrying Harry Ellis in a bumper cart
The greatest 5 hrs of my life😊
Great job as always. “Love Streams’” is simultaneously the perfect epilogue to the New Hollywood era that Cassavetes laid roots for with Shadows and Faces and the ancestral gift to the Indie movement that will be inaugurated in an about 5 years.
Awwww, 1984 I was a freshman in high school and loved the movies!!!!
So many classics from this year in film. We all can’t thank Roger Ebert enough for inadvertently creating the Cinema Snob.
Snobs year in review is the only way I can relax enough to get sleep these day's. The sleep snickering does keep up the dogs though.
Just what I needed today
I just love this series. thank you in advance. i will need multiple sittings to finish this.
All hail Donovan Scott, one of my favorite 80’s guys
Thank you, "Forever in Electric Dreams" is again stuck in my head.
So many classics! Loved this video
Streetwise is a movie that needs to be seen by the world!!!
Once Upon A Time In America is my favourite from 1984. If only the Ladd Company hadn’t completely botched the American release, it really could’ve swept the Oscars. Though I’m not convinced it would ever be a Box Office hit in the film culture of the ‘80s, but oh well.
It’s also, incidentally, my favourite film of the decade.
love this concept! will watch every one you do .. but this will keep me busy for AWHILE
Been patiently waiting for this one, lol. I was born in 86, and grew up on a lot of these movies. I think 1984 was the absolute best year for movies in general. I'm a huge Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones, and Terminator fan too. They just don't make them like this anymore man.
Great job 👏👍, love this series. Check out his other series and you won’t be disappointed.
The memories, this is your best year review yet.

43:14: hilarious line, Brad!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Birdy... one of my favorites growing up, especially for its music.
And to think, Birdy was already nuts before he even joined the war.
Yes, Brad. I was also first introduced to Spinal Tap through their 'Simpsons' episode.
Thanks Brad , I love these
1984 IN THE HOUSE!!!!!! I've been looking forward to this year since this series started!! And ya dang RIGHT, Elm Street is one of the best of the year!!
I've been keeping score for these years for movies because I love his picks!
1980: 12 (possibly more)
1981: 24 (possibly more)
1982: 16 (possibly more)
1983: 28 (possibly more)
1984: 26 (possibly more)
These videos kick ass, shout out to Brad! must’ve been a lot of work
Love these videos.
Weekend Pass, dude! What a year!
Hey, the Splatter University segment makes me realize how few Troma movies are being mentioned in these retrospectives. No 'First Turn On' or 'Waitress!'? You're slipping, Snob.
Kate Capshaw had a big year in 84. Best Defense, Temple of Doom, Dreamscape and Windy City... 🤯
Alot of my fav movies came out this year
Please never stop doing these
Body Talk is the ultimate workout song.
Holy crap... thanks CS!
So excited for this, the year I was born (gosh, I feel ancient now 😅)! What a nice premature birthday gift (Aug. 14th).
Thanks, Brad! ❤
Dunno where you found that "I'm watching my video" tune.🤘 But DAMN !!! that is the most 80s sounding piece of of unmusical, cheapo music 🤪 I've ever heard! And I'm all here for it. 🥳🤣
Great start.
This took me 4 days to finish.
.
Only for you Snobby, but holy shit that's a lot of amazing movies.
