      It's not that they don't care (if they didn't care they wouldn't care about tonnes of other problematic categories as well), but more than moderating a large platform is ridiculously complex. That doesn't give them a free pass at all, but as they always say "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.". So yeah, bringing attention to it again and again is indeed the best thing to do. Best thing to do is to contact any (big) advertisers that you see before such videos, as them complaining to TH-cam sometimes results in FAR quicker escalation.

    • @eurovision50
      @eurovision50 3 ปีที่แล้ว +146

      We're targeting the wrong people... Tell the advertisers about it, and that policy will change super quickly.
      It's a shame that the adpocalypse was caused by the odd stupid video that slipped through the net, rather than the systematic promotion of life-threatening hacks to children.

    • @dandereninja4750
      @dandereninja4750 3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      I think the onion trick might be more useful if you grow your own and are trying to dry/cure them so they will store. It would keep them suspended, away from bruising/mold, and with plenty of airflow. The only issue is that unless using old stockings, they're expensive enough I wouldn't want to dedicate a whole bunch of stockings to that purpose.

    The one with the forehead tape was really funny to me as a marine biology major. Most of the organisms shown, such as the daphnia (water flea) and a copepod, are found widely in aquatic environments, but don’t exactly thrive on human skin. Plus, they’re clearly swimming, which would not be possible on a piece of tape

    • @photofreak56

    Edit: as this comment has so many likes, I thought I should probably add a couple of things;

      I have to wonder though, and I'm not a lawyer myself, if TH-cam has some kind of "Release of Liability" clause in their Terms of Service that basically says that you, the User of the Service shall not hold TH-cam Liable for any harmful or dangerous content that is disseminated on the Service and subsequently acted upon by you, the User. Thereby legally passing the buck on to the individuals or the organizations behind the individual channels and thus necessitating the filing of lawsuits towards channels on an individual, ad hoc basis and freeing TH-cam from the risks of being held liable as a named party in any kind of a lawsuit be it individual or class action.
      And since many of these "5 minute crafts" type hacks channels more than likely do everything they can to obfuscate where and how you can contact them in order to properly serve them a legal document, good effing luck hitting those organizations with enough lawsuits to shut them down. They operate so dang many channels and pump out so much content that TH-cam happily profits from running advertisements on that they probably couldn't care less to lose one or two channels to lawsuits.

    • @ceekay3143
      @ceekay3143 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have no idea why TH-cam doesn't have some sort of warning, or doesn't force content creators to have some sort of warning at the beginning of their videos once someone has reported them.
      Tik Tok has a warning saying "The actions in this video could result in serious injury" on videos involving stunts and other things (sometimes on random videos for no reason, but anyway). They're also apparently trying to crack down on misinformation, removing videos that have been proven to be false, AND have an "unverified content" warning for videos where it's not super clear if it's true or not (which would apply to most 5 Minute Crafts videos).
      Twitter seems to have a prompt to read something before sharing the headline, to crack down on the spreading of misinformation.
      Facebook has a thing that tells you if a link is dodgy or has been proven incorrect, especially if it's related to the pandemic.
      TH-cam has been around since before any of those, but there's nothing on there to help people not fall for dangerous misinformation? I guess it's because so many of the views (so, revenue) come from watching and sharing videos that are just too ridiculous to believe. I mean, how many people shared Rebecca Black's "Friday" music video to their friends, compared to a nice song they personally like?

    • @krila3978
      @krila3978 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ceekay3143 I've thought about it before this video even, and the problem with cracking down on "harmful misinformation" is that it's far too broad of a term. It becomes a slippery slope when it comes to anything controversial, and gives the platform control on what to censor. Essentially has the ability to remove freedom of speech from the platform. Granted that depends on the position the platform takes and all ---- but that's still not ideal, especially since a lot of popular channels are controversial ones, or debate channels with hot takes.
      Really, they just need a way to require any dangerous video to have a warning/disclaimer, and to crack down on what the term means, banning all of it from appearing on youtube kids' searches. There would still be accidents, but far less.
      Or, of course, when these loopholes pop up they could simply add a policy against whatever it may be....
      Edit: Fixed a grammar error.

The purpose of the old lady's suit was to make the company take purposeful action regarding an actual dangerous set of circumstances. She originally only wanted her medical bills paid, the judge decided to add on punitive damages, which I think she ended up seeing little of anyway. Parents were asleep and it took only about 30 seconds for it to catch fire. Educating kids about what is dangerous and what is not is a better response. This way of storing onions is very popular in Slavic (post-soviet too) countries. I'm from Belarus and my grandmothers do the same for all their lives, the same as their friends, and as my family do too.
    Mostly it's for better ventilation that huge amounts of onions need. When you storage onion for 6 months it's not just 3 bulbs, the measurement goes in boxes! And one has to keep it in the cellar, which has increased dampness. And rotting in the boxes can have unpleasant consequences (believe me, you don't want to know, only rotten potatoes in boxes are worse)
    So it does help with bigger amounts and also looks fun in the cellar hahah something like onion stalactites

    The only reason I could think of about preserving onions by warping them in stockings (or whatever that's not air-tight) is that you could hang them up in places with good airflow (like next to a window) so it saves some space in your kitchen while minimizing chance of mold spreading, especially when you have so many onions that you could only pile them up in a basket. The same goes for chilis and garlics.

    With the parsley- one is ‘leggy-er’ than the other. They are trying to say that if the stalks have more leaves per stalk height, then it’s organic. The idea being that in-organic fertilizer makes it grow faster. Of course, anyone who grows parsley knows that it depends when in its life cycle it’s picked that makes the difference. The plants will get leggier as they grow longer, and they will often ‘bolt’ when there is an increase in temperature. So yes, there’s a difference between those bunches, but it’s not about whether it’s organic or not. The less leggy stuff usually does taste better though- just as with all greens, the newer they are, the more delicate the taste and texture.

      As an herbalist can confirm. Anything could result in different growth rates, the type of soil, amount of sunlight, watering schedules, temperature, humidity. There's so many factors that can exasperate the rate of growth. It has nothing to do if it was organic or not.

It's not that there aren't some out there that _also_ give bogus (or at least abbreviated) "reasons", but the ones that don't are almost always just made-up nonsense.
