    Hi I am Ann Reardon, How to Cook That is my youtube channel it is filled with crazy sweet creations made just for you. This week we are discussing an important topic - who is responsible if someone follows a how-to cooking video that is dangerous and gets hurt? Both so yummy and 5-minute crafts have uploaded videos presented as fact that are actually fake, inaccurate or dangerous. Join the discussion, does that matter? If so who should be responsible for this? The creator, the platform that leaves them up even if flagged or the viewer? Join me for creative cakes, chocolate & desserts, new video every Friday.

      I'm a little torn between the two... It feels very situational... Skateboard videos are everywhere and everyone can go out and try to do it after watching a couple videos... No harm.... Just the viewer trying or practicing what they saw... Those bleached strawberries... High harm risk as some kid would think it's okay to just eat them... I mean people were eating Tide pods and are currently going around licking shelfed ice cream... Back to the skating the risk comes when they do Daredevil stunts and the viewer trys doing some super cool trick off thier roof... Learning how to bake new and inventive snakes in the microwave no harm... Other then making it wrong and having to clean up... I don't know it just feel like they both should have a part to play... DIY/how to's Rules in place for TH-cam to help sway the impressionable minds and worried parents... maybe some mandatory warnings on videos so The viewer knows not to attempt without parental guidance or proper materials and safety gear... I don't know just feels like they equally need to take blame

      How To Cook That I think it’s both the platform that allows the videos and the creator who makes them. Both have responsibilities to keep dangerous videos off the platform and if the creator doesn’t care the platform needs to step in and do something and if they don’t they are responsible as well I know the can’t monitor everyone but the need to monitor bigger creators because they are more likely to be seen.

    The burn treatment was scary. Just before Christmas last year I was cooking and a pan of boiling oil exploded all over my hands and splashed my face. I did the running water (shower) but went to hospital with an ice pack and a bag of frozen peas. Got myself a freezing icy water bath for my hands and some gel stuff for the few splotches on my face. It was awful but saved my life since I was also told to get my blood pressure checked. 9 months later, only one small scar on my chest which got no treatment because I didn’t know I’d been hit there too. You can’t tell I’d been burnt. And my blood pressure is now controlled. But damn! The idea of toothpaste? Nooooo!

A lot of brands/channels would just say "no it wasn't done like I did it so it's not my fault." Which may be technically true, but it's far less empathetic and hurts everyone.

    In my country, there was a guy confroting a youtuber adopting cats and then starving them almost to death just so he can fake multiple videos of him "helping a kitten he found on the street starving".

      The only good thing twitter did was its community notes feature, and while I think it might just lead to people spoiling say story-based gameplay videos, it would be helpful for videos with illegal pranks or "hacks"
      Like imagine a blurb under the description like: "Viewers added context you might like to know: Ann Reardon is a food scientist and dietician. In this video, she breaks down 'X hack' from 5-minute crafts and shows not only how it doesn’t work but how to make 'X' properly."

    I feel bad for the first girl, it wasn't her fault that the death happened and the victim's parents should have been supervising her while she tried to do the hack. In this case, it wasn't the poster's fault, it's really just the lack of supervision and not following the video.

These TH-camrs put out videos for kids without any concern for safety. They and TH-cam has to hold accountable for harms their videos. Tvs and movies do that. Why won't they.

      I like that when she made a video that was popular enough with her fans that even though they did it wrong, she feels that she has to take responsibility for not thinking hard enough about how people might try to copy her and get it wrong (especially kids).
      Now contrast that with 5 minute crafts and the rest of those content farms who do stuff that is dangerous when done exactly as shown, which has also maimed people and for which they take no responsibility whatsoever.

      The new guidelines have their own problems though, most notably that they seem to consider anything animated to be 'child-friendly', which is really not the case. Kudos to you though for taking the ultra high professional road and being such a great teacher knowing that people would not believe it just if you told them it would burn. Just the temperatures that you show before you do the experiment. And for any body who has never been burnt by caramel you do not want it. I repeat you do not want it. As parents we should be teaching our children critical thinking and also being aware of the content they are consuming. As much as we want other people or entities, like TH-cam, to protect us from stuff like this, it doesn't change the fact that we will always deal with misinformation, and sometimes that misinformation is intentionally dangerous, and it can come from any source. And in the example given in this video, the events might have been a lot less tragic if the girls had made their parents a part of their project. I would want my son to tell me if he wants to try something like that, and then I can research it and figue out if its safe, and then use that as a nice practical learning experience.

Fostering trust so that your child knows they can ask you to do these things with them. So they know if it turns out it's not a good idea or dangerous they won't be mocked or scolded. Instead they know their parent will help them find a safe way to experiment.
      It also means letting your child know not to believe everything on the internet and that it can be dangerous not only for the child but for others.
      For example, "I see you want to follow this tutorial. Let's do some research together and if it's safe we'll get the supplies for it." or "Unfortunately this tutorial isn't safe. We can find a similar one that is or an entirely new one, what do you want to do?"

      @@jloayvs1869 The difference is that many of the censored channels are (by Googles standard) controversial in a way that may negatively impact ad revenue. They will have a fairly small following, but have a hard time reaching the millions of views that these channels get (and How To Cook That is one of the very very large channels).
      Many channels grow organically, by slowly adding a few thousand followers now and then, then growing to maybe 50k or 100k by providing high quality content.
      The dangerous ones roasted here are channels that need massive advertising to get viewers, and keep their viewers hooked by using cheap, fast fakes. They are mostly aimed at children (or at least teenagers and children make up a majority of their viewers) and they create tons of ad revenue, as the people watching are not the kind of person to use an ad blocker. But TH-cam are more than happy to send everyone to these fake channels, because even if only a small fraction get stuck, it is enough to create more revenue.
      If TH-cam were to ban channels that spread dangerous material without reasonable warning, or act on improper ad placement in the video in the same vicious way they allow the music industry to claim any video acting jury, executioner and claimant at the same time, these channels would never rebuild their following.
      These channels depend on brand name recognition and TH-cam supplying them with a platform for their message.

    I think it should be the responsibility of the channels to ensure that anything they recommend doing is safe for people, especially their target demographic. However, it should also be the responsibility of TH-cam to monitor things that do not follow this rule.
    The lines are blurred in these scenarios because there are things shown that should not be tried at home but should still remain on the platform. A video of a guy falling off the roof in a funny way should not be remade, but it should not be taken down, either. I believe that if they advertise the video as "inspiration" or as a "DIY", they should have to follow more rules that ensure the safety of those performing it.

She actually tried to pour (slow pour from just above the bowl, may I add) more into the bowl of burning alcohol. I somehow managed to react instead of freezing up (which I do most times in situations like that) and push her hand away, but I was just stammered at how an adult could do something so stupid. The content creators should definitely put safety warnings and disclaimers in their videos, at least in the description. If TH-cam doesn’t change their policies, yes, they should be held accountable for the damage that the video has caused.

      That's stupid. What if I saw a video on TH-cam of a cliff diver and went to dive off a cliff without training and died? That is not the video's fault it's my own dumbass's fault. It's the same with those two girls.

    • @steelpump100
      @steelpump100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +553

      Lord Ramuel yes but in this instance it's not common sense. These tutorials are made for kids, and when they see no warning labels or anything, they think something is safe, and they try it, and since the creator made a tutorial for kids, they intend the kids to do the very dangerous act, so no, it's still the content creators fault. If you advertise something as safe and easy to do (said by the titles of 5 minute crafts), then kids will do them, and if you lie about the safety of the dangerous act, you should be held accountable. Driving off a cliff is not the safe as spinning "harmless" caramel over a beater to make a cool dessert topping. It seems safe, easy, and delicious, so who wouldn't try the caramel? But unlike the cliff driver, it actually LIES about how dangerous it is, and doesn't show a person getting burned, or a label saying "do this with parent, or under parent supervision". Driving off a cliff and expecting to die is common sense, but seeing hot caramel almost solidify instantly and thinking that's real and safe is also common sense. However, it is not common sense to think the caramel is dangerous at first glance, and that the cliff is safe. So no, pretty different.

    • @chaosmagican
      @chaosmagican 3 ปีที่แล้ว +84

      I'm against that. If I'm right in the pretense we will see shortly in the realm of copyright but if you make the platform accountable for things like this they will not want to take that responsibility and overblock heavily (aka anything that could be slightly dangerous would be blocked or disallowed). Also why is it that parents are seemingly never in the equation?
      Frankly if kids (little kids) have unadministered access to flamables and the means to ignite them in their own homes, sorry that is 99,99% fault of the parent's lack of supervision. My parents never asked or cared where I got a stupid idea from, I did the mess, I had to stand for it. "but xyz did it too" wasn't even an argument

    • @steelpump100
      @steelpump100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +154

      Shinji Matou even if videos are meant for kids, it's not like you'd not put safety labels, plus, 5 minutes crafts is notorious for having kids content and still saying "no it's not made for kids" when it is. They are lying, and Ann readon actually talked about this in another video. They literally have a channel called 5 minutes crafts kids, and they still don't check the "it's made for kids" box. Also, fake videos or dangerous videos without warning shouldn't exist anyway, so it's not the parents fault for watching every single "kid" video with them. Remember, the major demographic of 5 minute crafts is kids, so wether or not it was intended that way, they have a style that kids watch, and it's not the parents' responsibility to expect a video made for kids to have "dangerous" acts with no warnings. Also, side note, 5 minutes craft showed the caramel being safe and you wouldn't burn, all you gotta do is get an egg beater, but Ann reason showed us that's fake. Is it the parents fault for not checking if a video is fake or not? Parents don't know what content farms are. Besides, the entire POINT of a recipe is supposed to be instructions, so if the video isn't real instructions and you have to do research on your own, then what's the fucking point of recipe videos? Same goes with life hacks, if you do a life hack that "works" and it doesn't work, then you shouldn't just not watch every single life hack or recipe. Content farms are outliers to the huge amount of legit and safe life hacks/recipes, so the parents shouldn't have to compensate for scummy businesses trying to gain money

      I worked in a kitchen that was missing safety equipment and in my haste to keep up with the kitchen, a pot of hot liquid cinnamon sugar syrup spilled onto my left arm, leaving a second degree burn all along the underside of my forearm. Anything hot and sugary really poses more danger than, say, a pot of boiling water, which may scald you but it will not stick to you like melted candy would.
      I think that content creators need to be very precise and clear about warning of danger and who should or should not perform what is seen in a video, much the same way as a magician on stage will tell their audience that, "what I am doing is dangerous and should not be performed at home, without professional training."

      My mother received quite bad burns when she was a child due to hot caramel. In those days the instructions on tins of condensed milk called for it to be simmered for quite a long time in the unopened can. Mum went to check the water not long before the cooking time had finished and found that it had boiled dry. Unfortunately the movement of the now-dry pan and the overheated can inside caused the can to burst open and spray her with burning caramel.

    The sad thing about the Ms. Yeah situation is that there isn’t really one person to blame. Ms.Yeah took about as much responsibility as she should have by saying that she would add more safety warnings and would pay for the girls’ medical bills but at the end of the day it wasn’t completely her fault. The video she posted showed a safe way of popping popcorn using a can. If the girls had followed her tutorial that accident wouldn’t have happened. However, you can’t really blame the girls, either. They are very young and at an age where they don’t necessarily understand how the world works and that for certain things you have to follow exact instructions or you will get hurt. There are grown adults who don’t know that flame travels up poured alcohol, so I’m not shocked that they didn’t know. As for the parents, you can’t really blame them either. I doubt they were around when the girls were trying something like this. I’m guessing they used rubbing alcohol or something like that which is a common household item used in first aid and cleaning. It’s not like there would be much reason to keep it locked away because they are past the age of trying to drink unknown substances (and it tastes too nasty to really worry about naughty kids trying to drink it to get buzzed). It’s just a tragic accident all around which shows that creators need to be a bit more on top of giving safety warnings whenever they use substances that could cause harm if mishandled. That won’t necessarily stop all of these kinds of accidents from happening because stuff like this can just happen cause kids will get it in their head that they know how something works when they don’t.

    • @gothicMCRgirl
      @gothicMCRgirl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      I mean, I can sort of understand. Strictly speaking, the video itself doesn’t posses any content that violates TH-cam’s Term and Services, so there’s really no reason to take it down or demonetize it. However, I DO think that videos that deal with dangerous objects, chemicals, etc, SHOULD have warnings. Like it was stated, there are a TON of kids on TH-cam (even though those girls weren’t really supposed to be using TH-cam because they weren’t old enough). It’s important to keep that in mind when you use a platform like TH-cam. This situation was just an unfortunate event, and I don’t think placing blame on any one person is the way to go. The uploader should’ve used warnings, the kids shouldn’t have tried to make this without adult supervision, and the parents should have been more attentive on what their kids were doing and with what. Everyone in this situation made mistakes.

      Sarah Rogers Maybe they meant helpless to protect your children, rather than useless. After all, if I had a teenaged daughter and her dejen sleeping over and they wanted to make popcorn, I probably wouldn’t think twice unless I knew they had an interest in these DIY videos. Better supervision could have saved these girls from this pain and suffering, but no kid wants that much supervision. Just a tragedy all around, I don’t blame the parents (at least legally speaking there’s no pot to piss in there) and I definitely don’t blame the TH-cam creator behind that video in particular. That bleached strawberry one, however, is knowingly dangerous and potentially lethal. I feel like the only leg they have to stand on is to claim the strawberries are for display only, which they don’t say, or to emphasize that it’s a joke (IE the meme of bleach being used to kill oneself, which isn’t funny just something that’s been around on the internet since the one girl attempted suicide a long time ago). That strawberry video needs to be taken down or age restricted and given a disclaimer

If its unsafe or questionable, I'll explain why with research and examples.
