Sabaton... CHRISTMAS TRUCE | Vocal Coach Reaction/Analysis | ugh... it's perfect... *cries*

  • Welcome!
Today's video is a first time reaction to Swedish Heavy Metal group Sabaton. I'll be reacting to/analysing their recent release 'Christmas Truce' which is based on the 1914 unofficial ceasefire between the British and the Germans in WWI. This story is incredible and the way in which Sabaton have managed to capture the, at times, disparate emotions of an almost unbelievable historical event is nothing short of fantastic.
If you enjoyed this video please like, sub and hit the bell (if you want to). Please be sure to check out the original video as well!

History turns to legend, legend into myth, and things that aught not be forgotten are lost.
    Sabaton brings that history back.
'Bismark' is fantastic and is far and away their best video visually. 'Screaming Eagles' would be next, and both are incredibly historically accurate.
'No Bullets Fly: the Animated Story' is an incredible song and arguably their best story. If you thought 'Christmas Truce' was touching, 'No Bullets Fly' will rip your heart out and hand it to you, and you will be both grateful and a better person for having heard it. It is my most watched Sabaton video.
'82nd All The Way' and 'Night Witches' are my favorites. The animated story of 'Night Witches' is a must.
'40 To 1' live in Poland is incredible, as is 'Attack Of The Dead Men' live in Moscow.

Probably the best way to sum up Joakim's vocals. He is great at leading the vocals both with the rest of the band as well as during the live shows. The "Sabaton effect," as fans call it, is driven in part by that. The whole band does a great job at making you feel patriotic towards nations you aren't part of by highlighting powerful moments in battle through music.

For some more epic videos i would recommand "Bismark" and "Fields of Verdun".
They also have some animated Story Videos that are definitely worth a look for example "Night Witches" or "No Bullets Fly".
My personal favorite song is "82nd All the Way".
And if you want to learn more about the history behind each song they have their own history channel on TH-cam called: Sabaton History Channel. To this specific song there isn´t a video to this point, but i´m sure it will follow soon.
Great reaction and looking forward to see you explore more Sabaton in the future.

That cross still stands at the exact place it was erected in 1914 at the side of a nowadays field, not the original anymore, but a replica. The location is in the middle of what used to be the no man's land during the first battle of Ypres, it is located near Commines-Warneton (Belgium) not far from the French border, not one day passes without fresh flowers, or even footballs being placed at the base of the cross, remembrance counts! Hi Julia! Joakim, the main vocalist is half czech. The video has been made in the Czech republic by czechs. We Czechs are proud of this group (even though thery are Swedish, though Joakim is half ours :-) ) as it stirs so many emotions in us. They've absolutely nailed this, making grown up ass men cry like little babies. Its this tornado of emotions that is associated with this band so much. When they've come on a concert tour to Czechia and sang "Far from the fame" for the first time ever (a song about our air marshal, who led our pilots during the war of Britain, and thanks to him, our pilots and pilots from other countries like Poland made the UK safe), the crowd went literally bonkers. For some reason, we are not naturally too patriotic, but when this band starts their show, we change into the most prideful people, who could do anything under our flag and Sabaton songs. I am sure other nations are feeling the same ("Uprising" for you Polish brothers, who sang your national anthem in hundreds of thousands people during Wacken - Julia, I recommend to look for this clip :-) ). Thank you for your reaction, Julia, felt the same way you have. Greetings and wishes of peaceful Christmas holidays from the Czech republic.

Sabaton music should be shared among all, so the history doesn't repeat. We should be as one, not fight over petty stupid things. The Christmas miracle is a proof that people can unite and share the emotion, even across battlefield. It is indeed amazing to see people reacting, especially their expression as they go down deeper and deeper the rabbit hole of Sabaton :-). Merry Christmas!

Oh and Julia…. In Ploegsteert where the heaviest battles were fought is a cemetery for some 300 Australian soldiers who gave their lives in this brutal war. Ploegsteert is a small village in the south-western region of Belgium, what they call the “Westhoek”, not far from the border with France. A few miles away is the village Frelinghien (Northern region of France but still known as the Westhoek, a lot of older people speak a mix of Flemish and French) where the actual Christmas Truce took place is a memorial statue to commemorate this event.

The truce broke out spontaneously all along the western front with very few exceptions. That is why Sabaton show a mixture of allied uniforms in the video, although, in fact, each army fought in their own sector, not in mixed units as shown here - so they are sort of melding a number of the truces into one.

This song moved me. I was a U.S. Marine infantryman in the past attached to 2nd Btn, 3rd MarDiv. I spent eight months in the Kunar province of Afghanistan mid-2005 to early 2006. My platoon did a security patrol on Christmas Eve. The locals knew the day, and practically all the Afghans we passed waved to us, wishing us a Merry Christmas in English. Afghan children drew near begging for treats, and though I told them to stand off at a distance, I hurled Starburst candies as far as I could to the Afghan children. That was a moving experience, and the memories that this song unearthed brought me joy.

My grandfather, whom I never knew, spent almost four years in the trenches during WWI. I've been there, to trace back his plight, and that of many tens of thousands. Flanders Fields, from Ypres to the Somme and to Verdun and back to Paschendaele. Such a sad and horrendous path to walk, even now, more than a hundred years later. And to know that at Christmas 1915 the war could have ended when the soldiers on both sides no longer wanted to fight. My grandfather was there, played football with the 'enemy' in no-man's-land, befriended the Germans who he had to kill a few days later because that's what had been decided by the politicians. he said we're going to have to come up with a different way ,instead of war because this is unsustainable and just too expensive . the world needs passionate driven people like this to give us a kick in the arse to keep on the job to figure out a better way..you can tell they put their whole hearts into this .it must have cost them a lot emotionally [ you're sort of negative worship leaders to open up the way for us to go into and experience a taste of the hell these men experienced .you don't/can't write such powerful music unless you're prepared to go there yourself ,so I SALUTE AND THANK YOU FOR CARING ENOUGH TO EVEN BE PREPARED TO DO THAT FOR US . i get it people .thanks for the uncomfortable terrible message .we all need to hear this AND DO SOMETHING .we owe you a lot ..i more than appreciate your contribution to the whole world with this .

So happy you're discovering Sabaton ! Joachim 's voice is so a wonder ! There are so many songs of Sabaton you can listen to and dig in a particular wolrd of metal which put in the spotlights episodes and anecdotes of wars in world history. You can listen to them live too, they're amazing ! But you can shed a tear on three peculiar videos : Nightwitches, No bullet fly and Bismarck (this one, you cry less but you sing the all day long the riff in it)

"Funfact": The soldiers were within shouting distance and some Germans could speak English. A ceasefire was agreed beforehand and the bodies of the fallen were to be removed from no man's land. The idea of not shooting at Christmas was therefore not that crazy.

Until this time, informal truces like this were common. It was a side effect of small "professional soldier" armies where soldiers often did travel from one national army to another, and truces to bury the dead and treat the wounded was an accepted part of armies. However it was the last time, and since that time it has been banned by just about every national military. Officers who permitted the truce were transferred, and some were charged with dereliction of duty. In 1915 the artillery commanders were instructed to maintain bombardment to prevent the temptation of a second truce.

It was the beginning of the military being primarily a place where the poor go... And only a small percent of upper middle class and upper class. The fact that it no longer affected those upper class people, as well as the Geneva convention and its "war is a natural extension of politics" mindset, has led to a century in which first world countries have been involved in conflicts worldwide.

@@leechowning2712 Germany has compulsory military service with two years of active service and 5 years of reserve. They weren't professional soldiers, but neither were they mercenaries. @@leechowning2712 In the First World War, many officers were still nobles in order to be able to control the proletarian soldiers. At the end of the war, the era of the nobles ended in Germany, Austria-Hungary and other countries. After that, the nobility lost their privileges and no longer played a role. The new upper class now consisted of people who had high positions in the companys and were therefore too important for a service at the front. However, they had these positions because the companies belonged to their families. The control of the proletarians no longer functioned through direct violence, but through the deprivation of their livelihoods.

Julia goes along with the song from the beginning. Feverish with every nuance. Gets goosebumps and so on. And then this huge super beautiful smile when she recognizes Floor. This is the best reaction and analysis of this song for me so far. And I've seen pretty much all of them so far. I also sat there with my mouth open when I heard the song for the first time. I thought that No bullets fly was Sabaton's best, but what Sabaton has done with this song... Respect! Merry Christmas to you!

When World War I started all the Germans living in France were kicked out all the French living in Germany kicked out so in the trenches you had family members on either side would you shoot your family member that is why it took so long for the first Bullet to be shot. Now you'll notice the French captain looks at a picture of his wife and child and writes them a letter Daniel notice a German soldier bravely climb out of the trenches he actually had a bottle of alcohol in his hand the French captain did not end up firing on him because it was his brother-in-law Christmas party started and that's when they gave GIFs and letters today family members cleaned up the Dead who played soccer then when it was all over you'll see the French captain give the letter to his wife and child to his brother-in-law then the battle goes on the very next day that French Captain was killed and that exact picture was taken off his corpse by a German soldier the Western Front movie actually shows his death💀💀💀

Great reaction! This video is so great, not only is this a brilliant song but the video makes it even so much better! There are many, many great songs by Sabaton. Another great video is "Bismarck".
You mention you love melodious stuff and epicness, well there is one band you would absolutely love; Rhapsody, later known as Rhapsody of Fire. They call their music "Cinematic metal" for a good reason! A lot of classical influences and an over the top bombastically epic soundscape. Too much for some, not for me :). Whereas Sabatons songs always have a historic theme, Rhapsodys songs are all fantasy, they created their own Tolkien kind of world. Suggestions would be "Unholy warcry", Holy Thunderforce" or "The Magic of the Wizards dream". Beware that in 2012 the band split in two, so after that it is not the same unfortunately.

Months late, but something similar happened in WWII during the Battle of the Bulge.
An American 3 man Patrol had gotten lost and happened upon a small house, they knocked on the door and the woman and her son let them in and fed them
A bit later another knock came, and it was a 4 man German Patrol who also had gotten lost.
She looked the Germans determinedly in the eye, inviting them in-but also warning them about what they would find inside. “You could be my sons,” she told the Germans, “and so could those in there. A boy with a gunshot wound, fighting for his life. His two friends, lost like you and just as hungry and exhausted as you are. This one night, this Christmas night, let us forget about killing.”
For a moment in the second most brutal Instance a war, 30 years to the day after the first Truce between British and German Troops, There was a lul in the fighting, even if for a tiny pair of patrols old enough to be the sons of this German Woman, Elisabeth Vincken

It does break my heart that they had to go back to the carnage afterwards...they threatened to court-martial anyone who instigated a truce in subsequent years, so I'm betting many defected after that.

Actually, there have been many truces, both on the Western and Eastern front. Both in 1914 and 1915. Some lasted only a couple of days, others for extended periods. With the soldiers shooting above eachother's heads when higher ranked officers visited the trenches.
Apparently, these trench wars also were the reason why officers quit carrying a sabre. The opposite army could recognize them because of their sabres, and took them out instead of low soldiers like themselves ....

I want to thank you for this video, it was very interesting to watch. Your first reaction of "What is this??" and then this slight confusion turning into appreciation of the song was very interesting to see.
The fact that Floor Jansen was singing the melody while the end credits were rolling does not surprise me. Firstly, her voice suits the piece well. Granted, the band could have picked somebody else to sing it, but why bother when, secondly, FJ is married to the drummer of Sabaton? Trying to find someone else to sing that part would be more work than having FJ do it!
