      I second Julia reacting to the all of Floor's renditions in Beste Zangers. We all know Floor's vocal ability and range, but seeing her singing songs outside her comfort zone, making them her own and nailing every one is awe inspiring to witness. And with Julia being a contemporary vocal coach, I think she'd really enjoy the show.

    Hell yeah, Floor looks proud at Henk's distortion/gritt. Before Beste Zangers, he had never distorted his voice like this as he is a trained opera singer, and adding distortion in your voice as an opera singer is simply not done. He learned how to do that specifically for Floor because of their mutual appreciation and respect.
    For Henk, Floor sang Vilja Lied from the operette Die Lustige Witwe (HIGHLY recommend you watch this one too). In return, Henk sang The Sound of Silence -- the Disturbed version (also HIGHLY recommend you watch this!) for Floor.
    Specially for this, he learned to distort his voice because it meant a lot to Floor. That was the first time ever he sang a song with distortion. This, the Phantom of the Opera, was the second time. The version of this song is a nod to Nightwish's version of the Phantom in which Marko sings with Tarja (wonderful version as well, you should watch this even if you don't want to react to it), and well ... you've heard what Marko sounds like.
    Great reaction, as always and keep the Floor reactions coming. We Nightwish fans can not get enough of them. Really, we can't get enough. It's like a drug. We always come back for more ;) Please, give us our fix!

      i think marco is more than special as a singer.
      but really in terms of singing qualities henk is really the better.
      Simply put, let henk train on distortion for a while and he puts on a good act.
      but no matter how good Marco is (and he is) he cannot make it as a real opera singer in a short time. (remember that operas are long and that is very heavy for the voice)

    Henk was one of the singers Floor looked up to as a child after seeing him in Phantom of the Opera. Henk did the rasp as a nod to Floor, who he is a fan of, which must be an amazing feeling for Floor. He has also been a guest in a couple concerts.
    I would argue this is a rendition of the Nightwish version of Phantom of the Opera which was done way back with Tarja who was Nightwish's first singer 20 years ago. The original with Tarja and Marco is amazing.

And that is something that Tarja never could and she will never be able to do. Indeed, there is a hint of a more rocky edge....ie a hint of nightwish. The premise of the show is that each week one of the contestants is "spotlighted" and the other singers perform either one of the spotlighted artists songs or a song that means alot to them, so Floor's association with Nightwish, who did a version of Phantom of the opera with thier original singer Tarja Turnen, and Hank adding in the vocal distortion, are why they are singing this song........but definitely NOT the grittier phantom I have heard, that honor goes to Marko, from Nightwish's version. It works SOOO well with the character. You should DEFINITELY check out nightwish's cover.

    Just one point to clarify in case it was a touch confusing: Legit is a singing style in musical theatre. There are two branches of the Legit singing style, Contemporary and Traditional. Both are essentially a modified classical sound however the traditional will be closer to classical with the Contemporary still using some classical elements but a lot more speech quality and other contemporary sounds.
    Also, big whoops on my part. I accidentally said that Sierra was the original Christine at 10:02. I meant that Sierra had played it in the actual show not that she was the very first Christine ever. Sarah Brightman is the original Christine, Sierra is just my favourite who has performed in the actual musical. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

      @@jvoxfox It's one of the things Floor does in her interpretation to add additional dynamics to Christine's part, along with singing the first passage higher to soften it, progressively increasing in power over the course of the song to the crescendo, and ascending in volume and harshness at each step in the crescendo. In general, Floor likes to make really extensive use of dynamics , and her approach to Christine is an example of that.

    The reason you’re hearing Nightwish vibes from this performance may be because the band is using the arrangement Nightwish made for their version of the Phantom of the Opera. ;) They also have a live performance of it on TH-cam. Sang by their original singer, Tarja Turunen. Marko plays the Phantom so, if you’re in for an even grittier (and sinister) take on the Phantom, that performance is a must to react to.

    • @OrdinaryCritic
      @OrdinaryCritic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Daniel, well, allow me to make it a bit more specific for your sake. It’s the same structure as Nightwish’s arrangement for the End of an Era. Being that NW’s arrangement came first (and is iconic to the rock/metal genre), it follows that this band did a homage to the previous rock/metal arrangement, albeit with artistic flourishes. It’s not exactly the same, duh, it’s performed by different bands live. Even one band can’t replicate each of their performances, there will always be differences.
      That said, this band stuck with the structure of NW’s arrangement (which deviated from Weber’s original a lot, from some key changes to structural deviation and phrasing displacements).
      Please do tell me how much this band’s “arrangement” deviated from NW’s established structure. I’ll be waiting.

    • @danwhitehousepc
      @danwhitehousepc 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OrdinaryCritic Other than having a rock style, it's nothing like NW's version. This one is more like ALW than NW. As you pointed out, Tuomas changed a lot more for his version. This one was down-right tame in comparison. And Henk insisted that Floor sing more like the original than she would probably have done otherwise. The lyrics were different as well.
      If Tuomas wasn't so talented, one might think that this version was a stepping stone to his version from the original. It shows his genious that this version is actually a step back toward the original from his arrangement.
      Doesn't really matter. Floor could sing all three styles.

    • @OrdinaryCritic
      @OrdinaryCritic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Daniel Whitehouse, you’re deeply confused. You’re clearly just talking about the instrumentation, which is much more classically-leaning than it is rock-leaning. Hell, people can play Phantom of the Opera using traditional instruments, the question is which arrangement (this refers to the structure and the key signatures used in each part of the song) will be used: Weber’s original or Tuomas’ arrangement?
      This has nothing to do with the “tameness” of the playing but more about which structure and key the performers use despite their instruments.
      It’s Nightwish’s arrangement, even if they used a xylophones and ukeleles to play it.

    • @OrdinaryCritic
      @OrdinaryCritic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kanashimi, wow. That’s a great rebuttal, except that it’s not. That would mean that every time someone adds a new instrument, it’s a new “arrangement.” Well, it’s technically not, sorry to burst your bubble. So, whenever someone used Nightwish’s arrangement (note for note in the same key and phrasing, spontaneous embellishments excluded), they just add a flute to it and now it’s their “arrangement.”
      Learn some copyright laws and technical terms for a change, you’ll get sued for infringement with that reasoning.

    I totally agree on Floor being a stage queen. However, I am quite prejudiced and lucky to have seen her on stage about 150 times in various settings. She is not the best opera singer, not the best rock singer, but she is up there, very versatile and knows exactly what she can and cannot do. She rarely has a bad evening. I have seen plenty of other singers too, and very very few are as consistent as Floor.

    Hi Julia
    great reaction as always! few things about this
    this is the nightwish version of phantom they're covering here so the key changes and all that is because of that so this is a cover of a cover if you may.
    Hank using that gritty voice and distortion is something he has done to honor Floor. He first did this in his song that he sang for Floor and its completely new to him as he is classically trained and distortion is a sin! many people already said this but you should check out his version of sound of silence he sang for Floor!
    and the last piece as others said again there is one gritty phantom out there that perfectly captures what phantom is really like if the story wasn't a musical... yes Marko Hietala... by far my favorite phantom of all!! he really nails the soul of phantom you better go watch the nightwish cover!

    I'm sorry to put it as stronly as this but you HAVE TO react to Nightwish "Phantom of the Opera" version, Helsinki 2005. Tarja's operatic voice is very good for this song and Marko steels the show. Great chemistry between those too, great actig too.
    Elizabeth Zaroff a prominent opera singer, vocal coach and YT reactor listened to the Nightwish version to hear Tarja for the 1st time but was blown away by Marko's vocals. She loved Tarja too of course. I've been told that Andrew Loyd Webber himself liked the Nightwish rock version.

      I feel that Julia and Elizabeth Zharoff's approachs to review/react are two of the head and shoulders to watch ( next best is Rebecca Vocal coach) because of their ability to both deconstruct the detail AND react to the feeling of the work as a WHOLE. Something that took me a very long time to be able to do. Having played music for a while ( not that well) I was able to deconstruct everything, but missed the totality of the work. This is very common with trained ( overtrained???) musicans. Julia and Elizabeth give us truely informed comments , show their love of the music AND have a great twist of sense of humour. I watch both of them , even when reacting to music I don't particularly fancy, and gain a new appreciation. With Julia you get the best quality of larrikan Aussie humour as well ( I'll show myself out...).

    First of all, thanks for mentioning Sierra Boggess!!! I adore Floor with all my heart but Sierra's Christine is on another level! :) It has Nightwish vibes because this is the arrangement that Nightwish did for their 2002 album Century Child. That's why she starts an octave higher and with a classical tone and ends with a D6 instead of starting with a low musical theater tone and ending with an E6 like in the musical. And that's why Henk does that part of the song with distortion, because that's what Marko does.

    Came here to drop the oblitatory chess reference:
    Queen to D6. Check mate.
    Aanyway, as others have pointed out Nightwish recorded this cover in the Tarja era, with Marko as the Phantom. The best version is live from End of an Era and it's amazing. No need to compare to this one which is also stunning. They are different, Nightwish's is of course in more metal style, Marko's Phantom goes absolutely crazy. The arrengement is similar though, they took some off Nightiwsh's for this version.
    As for this show, it contains some of the most versatile singing from Floor, different genres, different languages, all are great. This was the last performance to close out the season. I suggest also Shallow (Lady Gaga's cover) either solo or in duet with Tim Akkerman, and Vilja Lied.
