@@sjs2j305 I suppose "viewable" is a subjective thing, but I would hate to see what that head/face looked like before being "fixed up"!!! Maybe you are only referring to his body because that did look somewhat normal while of course shrouded in a suit. But the photos I have seen of his poor head and face are horrific. I admit I wept and I wager you all did or would as well. He made the elephant man look like Brad Pitt. It never fails to astound me when I see the violence and cruelty a human can inflict on another. Most of us, probably 99.99% thankfully, would not even treat an animal in such a way (what I mean is even if they considered him less than human, an animal...ffs how could anyone do this to any living thing!!!!????)

This was hard to watch but at least he is relaxing in heaven (this is a edit) but the irony was they told the grandfather that he would not live to see 65 if he told anyone but the killers did not live to see 62. Also Emmett's death made America and the world change forever. Out of sacrifice and desperation can come new opportunities and victory. This inspired Rosa Parks to not give up her seat on the bus. And for MLK to be more active in the Civil Rights Movement. Emmett's pain must have been excruciating and unbearable but now that has passed and he is in peace R.I.P Emmett Till. they will never forget because they lived it. Most people remember where they were and what they were doing when they first heard about the Emmett Till's Slaying.
Those people, and the Civil Rights Movement from the 60s will never forget it. Because they lived it.
However, were it not for the continuous documentaries, books, Social Media, newspaper and magazine exposure of the Emmett Till murder over the last 65 years, this tragic story could be lost from time. It was a bygone era where a mother or father sat their children down to teach them the trial and tribulations of living under Jim Crow.
Unfortunately, this, and many other important parental duties, have been relegated to the class room. Where the Emmett Till account has been taught in every high school in the US for 50 years.
      ____________________
My point was that, unfortunately, these books, documentaries, and print media have been written and produced by whites. And very little has been produced by Blacks.

I remember learning about this incident as a kid (history channel maybe?) about 25 years ago and again in school. Those people were pure evil, I can’t imagine treating someone much less a child/teen with an absolute disregard of life. I felt the same way when I was a kid before I was taught about racial history and it hasn’t changed afterward. Did she have any nightmares about it? Did it ever haunt her in any way? Did she ever stop to think "This could have been my child, what have I done?" Or did she just simply think the memories of Emmett's death would just fade away over time...that no one would even think about it anymore giving the passing of time. Well guess what, it didn't go away, we do still think about it, the memories didn't fade, because Emmett Till made history and that HISTORY will NEVER be FORGOTTEN. R.I.Peace Emmett R.I.Hell Carolyn

I can't even imagine how much worse Emmett must have looked before the mortician tried his best to repair what he could of his face. Until I read the comment Kittynakafima made about Mamie's interviews, I had only heard that the mortician didn't do any work on Emmett. All of the other videos I have watched said that his mother didn't allow the mortician to do any work at all on him. It is really disgusting that two grown men could do this to another human being let alone a child. The fact that they cut off one of his ears, pulled out all of his teeth, gouged one of his eyes out, fractured his wrist and caused skull and leg fractures according to the 2005 autopsy all before shooting him in the head, tells me that these men were monsters. They obviously tortured this poor child for hours. They obviously left a lot out of their story after already being found innocent of the crime. What they did tell was bad enough but I guess they didn't want to look even worse than they already did. I think that the Mayor at that time should have been prosecuted for trying to conceal evidence for trying to bury him the day he was found and the funeral home for getting his uncle to sign an agreement not to open the casket. Man am I glad that I live in a time that something like this isn't socially accepted.

Point is that the over arching theme is a lesson about how treacherous the Jim Crow era was and the Civil Rights Movement born out of this teaching moment. I like the focus on the killers common cruelly racist Mississippi mentality. However precious lessons were lost in the details unfolding between Emmett and Mrs. Bryant. No whistling seen inside the store. It’s like teaching the Gospel’s but leaving out the Christmas part.

I love the framing device in this film.
The story being told through collecting the testimony of the murderers reflects how the details of what happened were and still are a mystery, because it was being gatekept by unreliable narrators.
They believed what they did was right, and so did the system that acquitted them. Yet they are also terrified of revealing details that would hold them accountable.
It's almost like they knew what they did and what they believed was evil, and decided (consciously or not) to suppress that knowledge.

Emmett's mother Mamie was a teenager when she got knocked up by Emmett's father Louis. Emmett was born after they married. Mamie caught Louis cheating on her, and he strangled her nearly to death. The judge gave Louis the choice of jail or military, and he chose the military. Louis raped numerous women and murdered at least one in Italy. Louis was tried and convicted for his crimes, and subsequently executed by hanging on July 2 1945 at age 23.
