As brutal and inhumane as Emmett's murder was, he is far from the thousands of black men, women and children who were brutally murdered and we NEVER heard about it!! White people in Money, Mississippi and the surrounding area, joked that the Tallahatchie river was "full" of black bodies!! Emmett's mother was incredibly brave to demand that his body be brought back to Chicago and his casket be open!! The majority of black people who lost loved ones to lynchings and murders quietly buried their dead and didn't talk about it. Even though Emmett's case was nationally reported on, his family said they almost never talked about it. One of Emmett's cousins who was with him in bed when he was kidnapped, said that he didn't even tell his wife for like 8 years that he was cousins with Emmett. Willie Reed, the young man who heard Emmett's screaming said he didn't tell his wife about it for several years!! That was the only way these people could deal was by not talking about it. I'm sure all of them suffered from PTSD

He DID NOT WHISTLE. This CHILD had a SPEECH IMPEDIMENT. I read MRS. TILLS STORY. In her writings ,she would tell Emmett when he gets nervous or anxious, SLOW, down and take your time to speak. Take a deep breath and WHISTLE, getting his words together.

Emmett Till did not die in vain. Since this heinous crime was committed four months before Rosa Parks' act of defiance, Till's murder may be considered the first event that galvanized the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes a tragedy to get people to rise up and demand that things change.

@@summertimejay3157 I will respectfully disagree. A lot has changed. We now have civil rights laws against any kind of racial discrimination. Yes racism still exists but American society is now for the most part fully desegregated. Let's not forget that just 16 years ago, we elected our first African-American president. Yes there have been incidents where police shoot and sometimes kill young black men and those are indeed tragedies but I attended an integrated school where many of my teachers were African-Americans and other minorities and I now work at a company where minorities of all types are my supervisors and trainers so no, we are by no means perfect but not to acknowledge the progress we have made since the 1950s would be disingenuous. My grandfather born in 1900 in a farm house in Idaho traveled to Louisiana to visit his brother in the 1930's. It was the first time he traveled outside his state, let alone his hometown. Once he got into the South he said things changed. Blacks sat at the back of the bus, whites in the front. He never heard of segregation. He had never seen a black person in his life until he got into the Southern region of the United States. When they got into Louisiana the bus picked up new passengers, and let old ones off at the one of many bus stops in towns and cities back then. An older black men got onto the bus, but there were no empty available seats. My grandpa had a seat all to himself, so he stood up and offered the black man a seat, and a white man behind him stood up, tapped him on the shoulder, and said, "We don't do that down here."

In a 2008 interview with a Yale historian, she recanted the claim, reportedly saying: "That part's not true." Murdering a child in the way Emmett was murdered isn’t something God overlooks. No way! The woman who lied about Emmett didn’t escape judgement either. I believe these three cretins are burning in hell and rightfully so. Emmett was tortured most likely for hours. I don’t think he was dead when they threw him into the river. It’s one of the reasoned they tied a fan to his neck. They didn’t want him to scream or be seen. That, and weighing him down would mean he wouldn’t be found. These people are not anywhere near Emmett in Heaven.

I wish they had also reported that these villains also made Till look cocky about his white conquests at the beginning of their beating of him. They probably lied through their teeth with their quotes of what Till said and that sadly remains on the record. I wish that dubious testimony had been called out in the same way they did Timothy Tyson's lie that Carolyn Bryant confessed to him in the book "The Blood of Emmett Till."

Emmett Till was such a handsome boy. He did not deserve what happened to him. I have seen so many documentaries on him and some say he whistled and some say he didn't. It doesnt matter which one is the truth because the fact that two grown men (regardless of the situation) came and took a child in the middle of the night to torture, beat and kill this young man is just pure evil. His mother was so brave to want an opened casket. Just the thought of Carolyn Bryant just living her long good life while Emmetts family live with pain and hurt of losing their loved one.

A long life, but a good life? Not so sure about that. Bryant's Grocery and Meat Market went out of business when locals boycotted the store. And then because she obviously lied, Carolyn received hate and was mailed death threats up to her death, to the point that her daughter staunchly defended and tried to protect her. She basically had to cower in fear for the rest of her life, and honestly I think that's a fitting punishment in and of itself for her lies: never knowing if one day she'd walk out her door and be met with a gun or knife from the black community. Also, that dollop of being diagnosed with cancer on top which led to her death. I won't deny the unfairness of it though; she at least got to live, while Emmett didn't.
