In this Curling Balance video, Competition Coach Matt Bean, Club Coach Josh Levy and Club Coach Marcelo Bassani de Freitas demonstrate a balance and line of delivery exercise called "No C."
In this drill, we set up two brooms beside the hack which aid in discovering the dreaded "C" that curlers tend to have in order to compensate for poor balance.
After a long summer it's good to work on your balance and line of delivery in order to get your "ice legs" back and reinforce your muscle memory. This "No C" drill helps in reinforcing the muscle memory of not bringing your slider foot behind the hack. As you will see in the video, it's easier said than done!
Matt Bean was Competition Coach trained in Ontario and later Certified as a Competition Coach in Québec. He currently curls out of the Royal Montreal Curling Club in Québec. Josh Levy is Club Coach trained and Marcelo BF is a 2nd year curler and soon to be Club Coach, both out of RMCC.

Nice drill and use of visual aids! I'm going to use this for my students/trainees; thanks for sharing!
One variation of this for your more experienced curlers is to do the same drill - except the thrower slides with their eyes closed. Helps to eliminate the natural "cheating" adjustments we all do.
Only one hack? I've never seen that before. Where is this? Definitely makes sliding down the centre line much easier.
These are Marco hacks with pins and the hacks can be removed. They obviously just removed the left-hand curlers hack for this drill.
Looks like an effective drill, but it still creates a “C” motion as the foot comes forward around the broom on the side of the hack. Perhaps a better placement would be to line up the broom head directly behind the hack on the edge, which would prevent the movement behind the hack, but would result in a straighter slide forward? Just a thought, but otherwise I plan to try this drill out!
I like your variation!
When I was taught we use to put a rock behind the hack to stop the foot from going back too far and you can't swing it in behind the hack. 40+ lbs keeps your foot from going anywhere
Would be interested to hear some thoughts about what was happening with some of the slides.
Was it just the broom being there messing with their usual slide? Kind of emphasising that they had the "C" in their regular deliveries?
Yes, the broom there can be quite distracting and affect the slide, but it's a good exercise to help make the athlete conscious of their sliding foot's position. Don't judge the overall slide during this drill, it's only to help address the "c."
Timing is key on the slide. Need to get the sliding foot underneath the centre line (below chin) before kicking out of the hack. Landing gear needs to be in place before take off.
Ronald should wear loose-fitting pants so he can get his centre of balance lower. Congrats on not giving up!
You and Marcelo need to square those shoulders up. Keep the rock in this case hand in line with your shoulder that will help you stay more balanced and over your sliding foot. With the rock in line with your shoulder you need to off set your slider by the width of the middle of your head to your shoulder.
When is my turn ?
