    In all of my year studying music theory, I would say that japanese artists are breaking the music standards in terms of the western music industry. The amount of unexpected routes they use to compose is just honestly intriguing, it's like they purposefully use reverse psychology.
    It would be amazing if you would react to japanese artists, they mostly advertise themselves through anime openings or anime endings. It would not dissapoint you in the least, and I think it would be a good reaction video since it would be interesting to see your analysis in their compositions in the song creation process.

    I think you said this in the last video, but he doesn't improv his pieces, you can tell by the way they're structured and the very difficult, specific techniques that he uses, definitely pre-arranged. Still incredible and the reason I love his videos; so well thought out and beautifully voiced always!

    • @MilAS829
      @MilAS829 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Nope I'm pretty sure he does improvise, I believe he's said it somewhere in a video, cant remember which though. In order to make these arrangements you kind of do have to improvise first because it wouldn't make sense to just listen to a song and then immediately write a whole arrangement, it's probably a lot easier to improvise the song first by ear and then write, opposed to writing first. I believe he said something like he improvises on the original song until he makes a satisfying finished product. And if i had to guess then after all of that he would probably write it on sheet music. Regardless, improvisation is pretty much always going to be used, I believe the main purpose of arranging is kind of based around improvising of an original song and making it as creative and original as you can. I'm not saying this as like a gotcha though im just saying maybe you were a little misinformed as to what goes on. An easy example would be his Yoasobi- Idol. The beginning of that arrangement includes a pretty difficult improvised element, as well as the chorus and many other parts. As original as it may sound it really is basically one big by ear- improvisation.

    • @nobleplatter7650
      @nobleplatter7650 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@MilAS829 that makes sense, I just meant he probably doesn't sit down and improv the whole thing in one take, there's obviously written revisions. My fault though!

    • @MilAS829
      @MilAS829 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@nobleplatter7650 Yup no problem. Just wanted to clarify just in case. I also used to think that he literally just created them and didnt use any improvisational elements but now I know because I started learning some piano myself and figured out some of the terminology

    • @erckupazo
      @erckupazo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MilAS829he doesn’t improvise, at least fully… he makes the arrangement and gets a team of transcribers to transcribe his music afterward to make the sheet. He used to completely make the sheet before playing but he found it too exhausting.

    • @MilAS829
      @MilAS829 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@erckupazo Like i said it's not really an argument it's just a fact. Lots of his arrangements use improvisational elements. You can argue that the melody and chord progressions aren't improvised as they are given by the original song, but whatever animenz does with those is mostly improvised. If he were to take a chord and arpeggiate it or turn it into fast runs, as he does with a good bit of his arrangements, that would be an improvised element. Again I'll use Idol as an example, the beginning is very obviously an improvised element and includes a very quick right hand arpeggio run up and down the keys. Yes there are original elements in his arrangements but Animenz knows how to make a really good balance of improv-classical- and original elements. Even if he were to write and then play, he would still have to experiment with how it would sound and would probably improvise and touch up certain parts to make it better. In fact there's another good arranger who goes by Akmigone who made a video on how he improvised and arranged his awesome How To Train Your Dragon arrangement.

    There's a lot I'd recommend from Animenz. But an interesting one is his "Grand Escape" cover. Overall, it wouldn't count as one of his top pieces. However, the madness in his mind at the start always blows me away. Any sane person would hear the 2 instruments at the start and spilt em between the 2 hands. Animenz? Naah... man kept both instrumental melodies (2 different melodies on 2 different instruments, both somewhat fast paced) in the right hand and then goes onto play the vocal melody and it's chord accompaniment on the left hand at the same time (functionally playing 3 melodies and 1 accompaniment all at once). It's not impossible or anything just... man heard that and said "I want it all" and so he did.
    I would also probably recommend "Guren no Yumiya". I'll stop here for now before I recommend half his catalogue.

    Speaking of unintelligible music waffle, here goes. Personally, he's a very good pianist no denying that and he has some very good arranging techniques but it's very boring. After the first climax it was fairly predictable and too many times I was thinking especially in the first piece, end the piece already. As a composer/ arranger myself too much for a listener to be truly dragged in and take it all in. I am not coming away from that performance going wow that performance touched me, I am thinking, great pianist wonder if he could tone it back a bit because my head will be saw after two songs. Chopin for example had great ability to show what he was capable of without being too much. It's hard stuff to play, but after his runs or outbursts of emotion I like to call them, he scales back and makes it far less predictable. The double arpeggio for example he did for one of the variations near the end, after the first two I was bored and it was predictable there wasn't any fluidity to it, it just was one bar of melody then flashy arpeggios then back to the melody and then back to the arpeggios, what am I going to say next? This verbal outline should tell you if you're getting bored of what I am saying good, that's his music. Theory, absolutely fine, technique great, dynamics great as well, just his arranging skills are a bit over the top and show off too much. Where is the beauty in simplicity. Where you don't show off and it is more accessible to say intermediate pianists, you can still be effective without putting them through a twirling rollercoaster where you get tipped upside down, Sprayed water at, do the loop the loop all while listening to heavy metal. I'm sure you get the point. So I disagree, he's decent. Nothing amazing and wouldn't choose to spend anytime studying him.

      Also the impressive thing about his arrangements has always been how well they capture the sound and feel of the original song on just a single instrument. The texture, rhythms and dynamics are always on point and it really feels special to listen to knowing every detail of the original song.

      I guess maybe you're a pianist first and foremost, and an anime fan second. Or maybe you don't even watch anime at all. I get your point that piano purists may find them over-arranged but for the rest of us anime fans, his arrangements never fail to capture the souls of the original OSTs. And most of us would've heard the OST first, and use that as the benchmark for comparison. We don't care that much for musical theory to be honest 😂

      I like most of it but i think the first section with the tremolo octaves is a bit too much, if you know what i mean. It loses musicality and seems more to be for showing off.

    Beeing guest at Your channel I'd say that I couldn't agree more. I know Animenz's arrangements for more than 10 years, and I've learned from him a lot. His arrangements are by default some of the finest pieces of art I've ever stumbled on the Internet (period; I don't want to come into music theory gibberish here). That definitely made me a better pianist. Before I practice a piece I always analyze it - and it helps me a lot to understand what I'm playing, it makes lerning piece by heart so much easier (there is a lot happening in those arrangements). 'My dearest' is one of my favourites (still, close 2nd to 'Kimi no shiranai monogatari'). Tbh I find it one of (if not the most) musically challenging of his arrangements (but also technically not an easy one).
    / I love Chopin's pieces so the part where he used Chopin's facture is my favourite fragment.
    / Everything sounds better on Stainway. ;)
