l take a look at the Mi Wi-Fi repeater/extender and test it to see how it fares in real world use.
Is this bargain repeater any good or does it have any issues? Also included instructions on how to fix the repeater not connecting, and tests comparing it to another repeater

also i never used one of these repeaters/extender
so do they all work the same as in they have a separate SSID and password?
i have some devices that would be a pain to have to change the login credentials
App should be the same global, but I didn't try all regions it doesn't make any difference just Europe and some don't have all Mi products, so Xiaomi need to fix that one. All extenders I've used have their own SSID they have to you can't share the same one this just by default adds the _plus you can change it. Login is identical to the main router the exact same password is used

ALWAYS select China. ... and make sure your phone location is on! If not it will not locate the unit!!!

Thanks Mr Baz I was facing the same problem with discovering my device due to the region. Though I have owned this for more than a year now but one fine day the repeater suddenly decided to reset it self on its own and since I had forgotten the process I was having a hard time setting it up again. But your detailed video came to my rescue and after changing my location it took less than a minute to get my repeater up and running again . Thanks a lot.

I still have the Lumia 950 it's working alright not many apps tho that's the problem. Think I might be due an update soon, thing is the camera is still excellent, and it's hard to find wireless charging, removable battery, NFC in a phone not that expensive!
hi, may i know will this suffer from any reduced network bandwidth? which means e.g. let's say when we are close to the actual router, we get 200Mbps, and would this wifi repeater able to get us 200Mbps too? or the speed is being halved or lesser? Please reply to me as I really need to know the answer.
You can get up to 300mbps. Actual speeds will of course vary on the router and connection it can get pretty good speeds

What you didn't address is where to connect it to. You plug it into your computer near to your modem router to set it up. Then you plug it your laptop to boost the internal wifi receiver of it? Or you plug it into your upstairs smart TV? In another test you plugged it into a power bank.
I did address it it's a stand alone unit you don't plug it into a router or laptop, you set it up via the app (which I also show). USB power requirements are also shown 4:52
It's not a USB Wi-Fi dongle which is I think what you are looking for it's a range extender - it works purely on it's own repeating the Wi-Fi signal
What is usually the range of this device? Up to how many feet or meters?
It's impossible to say as there are so many variables, anything in the path of the repeater will cut it's range such as wall, doors, even outside trees etc. I'd say around 100ft real world is still giving a signal in open air, indoors less due to obstacles.

sir all of a sudden the wifi repeater isnt working properly i mean the signals are full but the connection is not stable and the speed is much worse my router is perfectly fine on tits own btw the firmaware isnt also updating to latest version what should i do?

No the app is for set up connect devices to the repeater in the wifi settings that is it
For anyone coming back here to find out how to connect their Xiaomi Mi WiFi extender Repeater 2, here is the issue that we forget in order to FIND IT in the app. YOU MUST identify your location as HONG CONG in order for the app to find that device. THEN, you can connect to it again. Why Xiaomi never did fix that location thing is beyond me. I can't imagine how many frustrated users there are because of this and the distrust of the product line having left this mess so long. This extender, repeater, is NOT shown using the USA as a location, only Hong Cong.

i can find the wifi repeater in the list of products but the app won't' locate my device, i turned Bluetooth/location on, selected china, honk kong, india etc as region, tried reseting but... the led remains orange blinking... any ideas?

As of todays date, this will No longer connect to unsecured networks. It will not even try. Just spent the better part of an hour trying every possible way to connect and it will still not let me.
I've not tried it recently connecting to unsecured networks, unless something changed with the app. Did you do a reset on it?

I've got problem on it. It connects and turned blue but I'm not able to edit the name and the password in the MiHome App. Hope you may help me.
I don't write the app it's got it's issues try re-installing it or resetting the repeater the option is there and it works for me
I bought this to work with my drone, but can't use because my drone has no password.
I don't know which drone you have most do have a password to prevent others taking control of it

most people dont know about that wifi but its super good, But when xiaomi did its last update in 2020 year end, it was taken out of the xioami home app for some reason i just dont No??

Hi there, I m staying in dormitory, I got access to common Wi-Fi but I need to go out of my room everytime. Bcoz inside never connects or sometimes connect but with 1 point not enough to send text and watch TH-cam.. Router is in ground-floor I m in first floor

It should work for that pretty well, just remember the app is a bit iffy select China/Hong Kong to get it working!

It will work with hotspot, it extends the range it won't make the speed faster as such. But it should improve speed when the signal might be low
Why does the Mi Home app need access to my 'Identify' , 'Calendar', 'Contacts', 'Location', 'SMS', 'Phone' (see 1:32 of video)? Isn't this raising security question with others? I refuse to install the app because of this!!!
It's never version of Android have more permissions it's not going to collect any data off you ie contacts etc

Does Xiaomi Mi Wifi Repeater 2 increase the signal range in expense of speed or does it have the same speed and increased range?
It increases the range, the speed you get varies depending on how far away you put it from the router. You'll never get as fast as the router, but it can be a lot faster than poor signal at the edge of it's range, that's the idea behind it
Hi, sorry to sound like a chump. My friend doesnt have broadband and uses the hotspot on her phone to let her son watch stuff on his tablet. Problem is when he's in his room, the signal sometimes drops. Would a device like this boost her hotspot signal?? Thanks.
It should work though I've not tried it on a hotspot perhaps some of the forums might have more information on it

No it won't work for that if you're at a college it should be enough on campus unless you're trying to get the signal from the perimeter ;-)
You might could if you connect with your phone or labtop first. Then copy your MAC address from the connected device to the extender. That way the public router thinks the extender is your phone or labtop that has already connected. Then you connect thru the extender and so it is all your devices are packaged within the extenders packets which all have the already accepted MAC address

Can this device extend my Wi-Fi range signal? I mean from my isp router to this device and from this device to my smartphone? How far is this device range? I need to connect to my router from 300m
It varies so much problem is objects/walls in the way, 100m clear line of sight maybe, 300m is a big ask might be better to look at a more powerful repeater
@@MrBazReviews I bought the exact product and use some android app to analyze Wi-Fi signal ..it's approximately 50-55 meter on clear sight (no wall or building getting 100% signal) more than that the signal is dropped.. Since this repeater is cheap I'm thinking to buy another one (or two) just to play around just to see how the connection quality at my barn ( approximately 200-250 meter away from host router)

I can find the repeater when I change to hongkong, but I can't connect my router to it. I can connect my phone to it and receive a message, but not my router :( Don't know what to do
Try doing a reset as shown in the video the app is dodgy it's often showing not connected yet it does connect fine

I've used this daily now and never seen it not let me connect directly to the router or this so I can't see the repeater being the problem. Just do a reset then use the app as shown to connect again should work fine unless you have a dud repeater

this device is pure trash. it's not even compatible with the Mi Home app so it's impossible to configure. it's the worst wifi repeater that i ever tested.

Most open Wi-Fi will have encryption, so won't work unless it's been turned off
I would like to ask if is it ok if i let it plugged like the way i do with my router (i have never unplugged it for a very long time)? Will I over heat it? Or is there a certain range of time that i need to follow? Thanks in advance 😊
At the end I show the power draw it's very low so never seen it heat up at all. You can leave it plugged in or just turn it off/on when needed

Software is weak it seems to work pretty well prefer re-boot at times though so yes room for improvement

I have been using one of these offshore (oil rigs) the accommodation has wifi and i managed to boost it to the workshop, but now the system has changed,
let me explain, before we could log onto the system call it "Oil Rig" then extended wifi was "Oil Rig Plus" and we just logged on with same password for both "Oil Rig" (the original wifi) and "Oil Rig Plus" (the boosted signal) but now it has changed
We have to log on every time we want to use it (like in a hotel) and it drops us out after a period of time. so in effect the wifi booster would have to be able to log onto the system too.
I don't see any way around this, can you suggest another method of boosting such a set up as this.

Why not try a reset on the booster and set it up again. Do you have to log into the main Wi-Fi every time? Or just the extender or both?
@@MrBazReviews The wifi is set up so that, your connection drops out after a period of time so you have to log in again.
The first time you log in you have to enter the password, after that you just click on two log in buttons.
I log onto main wifi with my phone ok, the repeater (Xiaomi (Mi) used to log on automatically with the old system but no longer works

trying to imagine a repeater that your phone can communicate with to accept log in info (same as i do for just the phone)

I found it gets warm but not super hot, I'd keep an eye on it if it's getting really hot something isn't right

It just repeats the signal it's a repeater not an access point. USB is just for power nothing else

In the meanwhile, in another video, I saw a guy connecting it to his drone, then later he was able to connect with his smartphone, through this "repeater", to the drone. Wouldn't that mean this device actually CAN work as AP? I guess I'll have to google it little deeper before purchasing.

You could get a hundred metres or so in perfect conditions with nothing blocking it, soon as you put walls and trees there it cuts the range down significantly. Remember it's only a USB powered repeater, there are much larger ones which are mains powered to push a signal a lot further. It's really mean for around the house or as shown I got it to push the signal to a shed and that was about 80ft away from the main Wi-Fi box with walls cutting the signal down

You can change those in the settings try Hong Kong worked for me but the app is buggy, if no joy a reset as shown

It's a repeater so it needs the original signal to repeat it. It can't pick up Wi-Fi like a phone/cell sim unit it just repeats the signal that is in range

Does it really amplify with 300 metters?
300m is a very long distance there are too many variables ie what's in the way of the signal
In clear line of sight range is good ie if you want to use it for drones as some have

Power off router and the Mi Repeater reset the Mi and try it again also power off phone/restart it and do the app again it should work
dont help restart phone router or mi repeater...
If it's not working try it on someone else's Wi-Fi if it's not 100% then it's faulty get a refund/replacement. Make sure you have changed the location so it shows up that's the app problem as shown in the video
So is the transmitting power equal from both flat surfaces or there is one "forward" direction to use?
Doesn't seem to make much difference but you can angle it around there is no one direction on this both sides work
Thanks for answer I will try it. However I suspect the signal lobe from the short sides (4-5 mm thick) is probably the shortest I assume.

Impossible question being honest so many variables, objects buildings in the way, weather etc all play a part.

have to tried the "roaming" option, basically from what I read it will have the same SSID name from your main router so current hardware will not need to re-log in, but my question is will it conflict with the main router? I mean devices trying to connevt

Hi. So I was trying to connect this to my router but said it failed. But after scanning available wifi, it showed the same name as my router with _plus at the end. Does this mean it's connected? It's showing a blue led on the repeater
The app is iffy to say the least, but if it's showing the router with the _plus that's the repeater, and the blue means connects, so it should work
