You prolly dont give a shit but if you're bored like me during the covid times then you can watch all the latest movies on instaflixxer. I've been binge watching with my girlfriend lately =)
I haven't seen a better training video, except maybe your CV Joint tear down. But you had help there. ;-) Couldn't have found this at a better time - working on a Toyota axle this weekend for a leaking CV boot - and now, will likely just go through both ends rather than just snap a new boot on while on the vehicle - thanks to this video. Great work!
Good job. My problem is it's not locking in at the opposite side of the hub. It will lock in place but when I drive it slides out. Nothing is damaged everything still looks good.
Big THX for showing all this work, helped me a lot. To me it seems (not that I am an expert) you did put bit to small amount of grease. I would put more, just to be sure when tripod is working grease would not stick on the outer edges, leaving tripod bearings bit dry.
Hi andy! I just saw your video. At 24:40 thats how i moved mine. And the knocking noise was on inner cv joint. When you moved your axle there was no sound at all.
hey Andy, I'm doing lower control arms on a 2005 camry and pulled a bit hard on the knuckle so had the drivers inner cv clamp(small one) slip up toward the engine and start leaking grease. I pulled the clamp back into the proper spot and the leaking stopped. Is this an indicator that the clamp is loose and should be replaced? also, the grease dripped out more like lube than grease- definitely not as viscous as your red grease, although it looked quite clean. is this an indication that I should regrease the joint? finally, not much grease leaked out, maybe 2 tablespoons. should I add grease? so, should I replace the clamp? should I regrease the boot due to the consistency of the grease? should I add grease because some leaked? thank you so much for these videos and your time!
hi Evan, sorry for the late reply. The clamps should be reasonably tight but not too tight as to deform the rubber boot. The amount of grease that leaked out isn't anything to worry about & it does thin over time. I think you'll be just fine. Check if it's leaking after a drive & if it is then you'll have to replace the clamps but this can be done in situ. hope this is of help. Cheers Andy
You made sure you marked the outside surface of the 3 bearings and reinstalled them the same way they came off, but I was wondering if it matters which slot they go back into when you put the outer joint back on?
As the three needle Roller bearings have a bearing outer race then it does not matter which groove they run in on the outer. Hope this helps. Cheers Andy
I have a Honda cv axle that I’m re building. I marked the orientation for the tripod on the splines. But they all got removed after I cleaned it with brake cleaner 🤦♂️. I’m worried that if I install the tripod one spline over it will align in the tranny but not in the wheel hub since it’s one spline over? Help :/
Great video. I'm working on an 05' Toyota Highlander. The passenger side tripod joint is different than the drivers side....at least I think so. The drivers side has 3 swiveling wheels that all look good. However, the passenger side only has 2 swiveling wheels and the other is perfectly vertical, similar to those in this video. It spins just fine, just doesn't swivel and doesn't look like it ever did. Is this normal? I haven't found any info on this and need to get the vehicle fixed. It's a friend's SUV and she has 5 kids to haul around...lol. Thanks in advance for any info!
Thanks the video was very informative .The left back wheel on my 1985 nissan laurel is vibrating when the car is jacked up put in drive .When i am driving and it reaches about 30 to 40 mile per hour the car vibrates badly could a tripod cause that may be if it starts to wear ?
Yes, but more likely that the tyre is out of round. Swap the wheels front to rear to eliminate that as an issue. Also check Wheel bearing & shock condition too.. Cheers Andy
Can I ask you a question please Andy? I have a knocking noise (NOT dependent on speed) mainly at a few mph when going over bumps/rough surfaces on my Renault trafic off side front. Could this be Tripod joint/ Tripod joint housing? Many Thanks! Brian (Dover UK)
Hi, sounds more like the top mount on the strut suspension or possibly the anti-roll bar bush/joint. Best check for movement. Hope this helps Cheers Andy
Hello, great video! Question: ¿The boot is the only thing that keeps the tripod from coming out of the cup axially? I mean if you pull with enough strength as to break the rubber of the boot, you can take out the tripod out of the cup. ¿Right? There's nothing holding it in.
A soft faced hammer would be plastic, rubber, wood, as copper would be work hardened, or in this instant, a brass drift against the spider collar , oil everything to stop galling.
Hi Carl, unfortunately you can't buy the parts individually - it's a bearing, with an inner & outer race & ball bearings. They all wear together & need to be replaced as a set. Sorry Andy
Thats a wonderful video. Wish had seen before. I have put tripod joint upside down and can't fix retaining ring. Is there a way to fix. Tripod joint doesn't want to come out of spindle, tried hammering it a lot. :( Please advise. Thanks
+Ajay Jain oh damn....you will no doubt damage the retaining clip so you'll have to source a new one. Will probably have to use a puller to get it off now.
Hi Andy, I am the drivetrain lead for my school's Formula Society of Automotive Engineers racing team. We use tripod joints for our rear axles, and I was wondering what grease is recommended for tripod joints. I've read about tripod joints not liking moly or other EP additives, but i'm not sure why this is or what grease is recommended. Any input would be helpful, thanks
My kid managed to separate the tripod joint from the housing by hitting a huge pothole?? I can see where this is possible? Is it probable? Not much in vid about failure causes. Thanks
Can the joint be put on the spline upside down? I saw you marked the top but when I changed a cv boot on my car I didn't mark the top of the joint and I put everything back together now there's a little bit of play in the axle and wheel. I failed a wof at vtnz because of play in my wheel now Im thinking I may have put the joint on the spline the wrong way up. I also live in Auckland, any advice will be much appreciated.
Hmmm....the CV joint doesn't provide any support to the wheel. If you have movement at the wheel it can only be due to 5 things: 1. Strut top Mount/bearing play 2. Strut inner piston rod bush worn 3. Top &/or bottom ball joint play 4. Wheel bearing play 5. Wheel bearing outer or inner race is a loose fit in knuckle joint or on hub. It is possible on some CV joints to fit the inner race the wrong way around but often this becomes obvious when trying to refit the balls into the cage. Hope this helps Cheers Andy
My car drove absolutely fine before I changed the cv boot so I'm thinking I had put the cv joint on the spline the wrong way cause today I checked it out and I grabbed the axle and It would move only one way. It would move in towards the gearbox but it wouldn't move back the other way. On one end of the tripod bearing there's a 45 degree angle in it and then the other end is straight and flat just like the one in the video. So I think I have the angled side up and the circlip isn't sitting flat against the joint it's moving down the angled bit creating the play in the axle. I need to turn the joint bearing around to the otherside so the straight flat side is flush up against the circlip so it doesn't move. This problem only came about after I changed the inner cv boot. I can see you have the flat side up of the joint bearing right up against the circlip
And also I saw you didn't have to take out a retaining clip that usually sits inside the coupler to keep the joint from sliding out of the coupler. On my car it didn't have a retaining clip aswell so I guess I don't need one. I'm just 100% positive I put the cv joint on upside down cause that's pretty much the only thing I touched on my car before I took my car for a wof. I knew I should've done something to identify which side it had to go on lol
When I replaced the axle on the drive side but the passenger side don't move when the car is off the ground is this normal or do I need to replace the passenger side to
At a guess either a misalignment due to previous crash damage or bent drive shaft (if you only replaced the joint previously). You could also have a broken engine mounting so check those too. Hope this helps Andy
Really clear and concise. Great communication.
Thanks again Andy, I've never seen inside a CV joint before, fascinating.

A word of warning always make sure you put tape around the bearings to stop then coming off when your taping then on to the shaft or off.
I’m watching this video cos one of the bearings exploded when I removed my cv axle 🤣 good advice
Hi andy! I just saw your video. At 24:40 thats how i moved mine. And the knocking noise was on inner cv joint. When you moved your axle there was no sound at all.
I keep breaking the tripods... Start with the needles and then all goes with it.
Any sugestion to try to make them more durable?
what happens if you take the tripod joint out and forget which way it went on?
Thank you very much..

What do u suggest to remove CV grease? Brake Cleaner Spray liquid or gasoline?

Thanks Andy i wanted to ask do you need a spring inside the tripod bucket because i have seen one wiyh a spring inside

Molybdenum disulfide grease for both CV & Tripoid joints - that's what I use.

Which grease are you use for tripod?
Any grease that states it's suitable for tripod joints, most lubricant manufacturers list one. I use GKN.
Hope that helps. Cheers Andy
What kind of grease is that I've never seen red??????
Oh just standard lithium soap based grease - red is just the colour that manufacturer uses!

Nissan probably have their own 'special' grease but so long as you use Molybdenum disulfide grease you should be just fine :-)

Same in NZ & UK....
