seriously. Being vampire is likely to be more beneficial than being chaos warrior... instantly immortal, society integration, possibility of living fancily, accessing to various facilities, able to making treaty with humans (trading blood?).
a war hammer game where a vampire tries to fight his bloodlust and keep his humanity would be vary dramatic and interesting, I would love to see that. also it would be even better if the vampire was a monster hunter, you know what they say, fight fire with fire! :)
Super late reply, but in Warhammer Roleplay the vampire sourcebook Night's Dark Masters has rules for playing a vampire if you are so inclined. Definitely not what the game was built around, but it is doable and can make for an interesting campaign. That being said I also have to recommend Vampire the Masquerade, it is a fantastic game and what got me to roleplay beyond kicking down doors and stabbing bad guys.
Regarding the feeding of Vampires. The novel 'The Red Duke' sees the main character, a Vampire Bretonnian Lord locked away for I think centuries. He was buried impaled. But not wanting to dessecrate his body (he used ot be a noble man) he was not burned. In short, he revitalized and was forced to endure an eternity of hunger. When he escaped from the tomb/monument he had become delusional and stuck in the past, seeing things as they once were.

Seeing as you clearly know a far bit about this could answer a few questions for me about war hammer vampires. Does it have to be human blood and if so does the person who's blood it is actually have to die like in some vampire legends where the vampire is mainly feeding off the life sources and the blood is just how the life force is transfered. Oh and how would a vampire living in human society not get burnt by sunlight even if it doesn't kill them walking around and doing normal stuff must be hard. I take it seeing as they go in churches to learn they don't have a problem with the whole can't go in churches and look at crosses or what ever the common religious symbols are in war hammer.

I've been liking Warhammer for quite some time now, and even had a kind of general knowledge of the universe, though in the end I thought it basically was only a "melting pot" of almost every fantasy setting existing. Now with the new Warhammer Total War getting me quite hyped and interested in the universe again , finding this channel (with your to me pleasant way of speaking, soothing background music and nice choice of artworks) has really been a great discovery and shown me the great lore that actually stands behind the Warhammer universe. So thank you very much for these awesome videos, and please keep them coming. P.S. I like your humour ;D
One thing I would like to mention Sir Arch is that, Bran Stoker's Dracula, could survive in sunlight. In fact there is no evidence that it is even painful for him to be in sunlight. According to the book itself Dracula is simply weaker in sunlight than in darkness. He also needs to rest on occasion to restore his abilities, but sunlight is not a problem for the Bran Stoker variety vampire. Although garlic and a stake through the heart do work on him, as well as a good old fashion crucifix, Dracula and the three female vampires that accompanied him were fairly powerful beasties.

Wait.. could you turn a High Elf into a vampire? Because if you need to feed on a dragon to cure the blood curse, High Elves could get you relatively easy access to dragons if you turn the right pointy-eared SOB. Or if you turn one who turns another until you've got the right people. That would have made an interesting story.
Yes I'm sure it's possible. Kinda like chaos corruption. Vampirism had to come from somewhere. Meaning chaos gods. I'd imagine Tzeentch since he's a deceiver. Or slannesh because of the stereotype of vampires being able to charm others, and hypnosis. Sounds really tzeentchy but slannesh to due to needing to drink blood to outlive an endless life of debauchery. And I'd say vampires debauched themselves very much. It had to come from a chaos god.
@Beau Vampirism doesn’t actually come from chaos at all. It’s distantly a bastardized version of Nagesh’s ritual of immortality if I’m remembering correctly. Iirc one of his followers made a flawed elixir of immortality and in much like the Chinese and gunpowder they didn’t exactly get immortality but what they did would change the world forever.
@@cameronjames3499 Khorne would heavily disapprove of the fact vampirism and vampiric life revolves heavily around magic and necromancy. Not blood magic, but all schools of magic and that would infuriate Khorne so bad he'd sooner see his creations destroyed - so it feels pretty much impossibly for it to be Khorne. You have to remember that even their more brutal and savage vampire forms are essentially buff necromancers. Strigoi. They still use necromancy.
abhorash, the blood dragon is basically the vampire version of chuck norris. I looked him up on the war hammer wiki and the dragons fire did not even burn him. I would love a game where you can play as him.
4:30 Funny enough, the whole "weak to sunlight" thing was a more modern thing with the dracula rip-off known as Count Orlok in the movie Nosferatu. The real Dracula (not the crap rip-off one) doesn't die or even gets injured in sunlight, he just loses his powers and becomes akin to a mortal man. Quite interesting how a knock-off managed to influence mythology that much.
Also the whole thing about new vampires are weaker than older ones may be negligible as it's been said in the lore that the older a vampire gets, the stronger gets as opposed to a human who gets weaker the older they get.
Yeah but a first generation vampire would still be stronger than even the oldest of later generations that's what he's getting at. Also it's more about keeping the bloodline going that's why most of the vampires don't turn anybody and everybody

Having been away from Warhammer for so long and coming back to find storm of chaos and end times and whatever the clusterfuck they have going on in this age of sigmar shite just made me forgot that Warhammer used to be cool.

I've never been terribly familiar with the Vampire Counts, but this video left me with one lingering question: if the Necrarchs' (pardon my spelling) ultimate goal is to unleash a spell that eradicates all life... what would they feed on?

how do khorne worshippers view vampires, do they not care or do they not like them more than others because they think blood is for spilling not drinking
Now when i think of a vampire i think of victorian era vampire, like a well groomed, long straight hair, higher up in society seducing women type vampire very skilled in combat. Are there vampires like that in warhammer? Not just the bald headed nosferatu looking vampires that are terribly ugly. I see a lot of artwork of the bald ones but i do occasionally see a long haired badass armored looking vampire with a beastly looking sword but im still trying to grasp this rich lore.

Wicked Vampire I do hope that they do them justice, but if you like this lore, I suggest you start reading up on 40k. I know, I know, fantasy in space? But it's really great and a lot more fleshed out in many ways. There is an excellent board-game that promises tons of fun called Relic. It really gives you an incentive to explore the lore of the titanous chaos space hulks, the endless swarm of the tyranids who enter the galaxy at many points (indicating they've already taken out the rest of the surrounding galaxies), the Orks and their gigantic kill kroozas, etc. (Not to mention Kairos the fateweaver making an appearance, the garden of nurgle, maze of Tzeentch, the palace of Slaanesh and the Hall of Khorne making an appearance.) Also it's got the cooler version of the vampires, the Nekrons. If you like Warhammer lore, and you like sci-fi, you'll love Warhammer 40k. Just saying.

Wicked Vampire I used to share that view for a long time, collected Warhammer as a kid and was way into the lore. It's only in the last couple of years that I discovered how intense and deep the 40k universe is. Really, give it a shot. Me and every one of my close friends have recently begun to think of it as the best fantasy/sci-fi universe in existence.
+ArmorDonio Most other races have long lifespans compared to Humans. This makes them less inclined to attempt to achieve immortality through Vampirisim than short lived humans
Well Dwarves are... dwarves, they are kind of resistant to Magic, and raising them is more trouble than its worth. And Orcs... welll Silvania and the Orc wastes are so far away from each other. Getting your hand on a dead ord is to much work when there area always plenty of dead Humans around.
So, Blood Lines gets weaker the more people are made vampires, but the Blood Dragons are far more liberal than most bloodlines when it comes to recruiting... but then how can they remain such powerful fighters? Also, if Blood Lines are doomed to get weaker as they proliferate, does that mean that the Blood Lines will eventually become so weak over time(even if it might take millenias) that they will just disappear? I imagine that even immortal creatures as vampires will suffer losses over time, especially in such a violent world as warhammer.
SinerAthin well think of it this way. gen 1 gen 2 gen 3. if a gen 1 sire a vamp its a gen 2. if a gen 3 sires a vamp its a gen 4. if the gen 4 sires its will be a gen 5. but if the gen 1 keeps producting gen 2 the bloodline will remain strong.
SinerAthin its also presumable that those who are "recruited" by the blood dragons are already powerful fighters in their own right. war is all around and an ample recruiting ground to those that show their worth and being vampires would allow them mobility within the shadows. a soldier who fought valiantly might consider vampirism if they've been mortally wounded.

Tuedon when I went to pick up my vampire the masquerade book from the local game shop, back when it was first released and I was in that dark/edgy teenage phase, there was a Warhammer game being played, elves vs dwarfs I think. But one of the player's buddies was reading the vamp codex.
Arch, i love your videos and i think some of them are masterpieces, covering the whole history and "feeling" of the race/faction. But i found this video lacking much of the politics of the vampire counts, having focused maninly on the vampire aspect. How do the counts organize themselves, by blood lineage? who they fight and why? how do they relate with other races. I have seen many of your other videos, and some of them covered all of these aspects. Anyway, great job!

Like the progenitor is the purest blooded (meh) then all people he gives the blood kiss to are more weakened but still very powerfull and then once these vampires gives the blood kiss the blood line is weakened again and so on...

Objection! Sunlight does kill warhammer vampires. It's a matter of willpower. Those strong enough can't be killed and some can't even be harmed at all by sunlight though most do burn up from the inside out
From the dragon blood, I am curious if it is the physical blood or if it is the life-force or soul that they are consuming. Or if it is the natural magic that blood contains. I am also curious as to what would happen if a vampire was to be dropped into one of Khorne's rivers.

holsson85 Many vampires do cultivate humans as cattle but they very rarely drink directly from the human due precisely to the risk of killing the relatively valuable cattle.

You mentioned that vampires arent necessarily "malevolent" yet all drawings of them depict them looking less then...friendly to be around. Is that just a fashion of vampires in WH? Also can vampires survive off of blood of animals instead of ppl?

If say Vlad von Carsten created a new vampire would that new vampire weaken the Carsten blood line, or does it work by generations so as it goes Vlad, Manfrid, random chuckle fuck #8... the levels of vampire become weaker. Vlad is stronger than every other Carsten and Manfrid is stronger than most.

These are now foremost & forever my favorite faction, I have been vampire aficionado since I saw the late Sir Christopher Lee portrait of Dracula but the crown of the vampire king still belongs to Bela Lugosi, that & I'm Romanian, and Vladislav Ţepeş is my childhood hero! :D But I like how they decided to take there origins back to the original which was Egyptians, as the oldest scriptures date back to ancient Egypt with regards to the "undead", in particularly vampires, they are often described as rising from there graves to feed of the life force, of Ka's(spiritual strength) of there victims, sunlight can kill them in that part of myth, since Ra was the Sun God in the Egyptian pantheon & its leader, and did not tolerate there existence, in most case these souls were the most heinous among people that or individuals who dabbled in dark sorcery & other things like. Now we also get a bit of Greek mythologies int here origins mixed with some Persian in the form of the Lahmians, Lamia was woman in Greek mythology who was a priestess that seduced Zeus & Hera cursed her to kill her own children & bring ruin to any & all men she encounters, usually by destroying there lives before feeding on them, she appears in a Persian form by the same name & same story, but she mostly is remembered in modern day Christianity as Lilith. The Strigoi is obviously taken from my country, love them :), but there origins are some what similar to Draugr from Norse myths, a Strigoi is made when a Dacian/Thracian dies on the battle but is denied access in the kingdom of Zalmoxis, there king among the gods & god of earth, they are then condemn to feed, other usually are made from acts of sins, such a suicide, murder, fratricide, etc. or sorcery, the name roughly translated mean to scream, there more historically realistic origin might be tied to certain species of now extinct nocturnal fauna, bats & owls, perhaps barn owls, there screech is quite terrifying, while the Blood Dragons are reference to the Order of the Dragon, of which both Vlad & his father were member & along with the other von Carsteins are a tribute to the classic Dracula style vampires, while the Necrachs are the Egyptian ones I mentioned above,. I most cases killing vampires usually requires destroying the grave, stake tough the heart does but it has right though the spine & out the other end from the back, like fully piercing the chest, silver burn & beheading, some of these are also adopted in the case of Asian vampires, burning the body & scattering the ashes at either a crossroad or holy ground, religion is irrelevant as long as strongly frequented as the spiritual strength of that place can remove that of the vampire, well unless he is older then grounds them selves, holy water, not unless its spring water, deep rock, volcanic passing through a silver vein. Holy Symbols are useless, unless they have implanted with a spiritual & or psychic output, think of it like lets say G.R.Martin or Tolkien giving a first edition copy of there books & you passing them on to there kids. I've been liking Warhammer for quite some time now, and even had a kind of general knowledge of the universe, though in the end I thought it basically was only a "melting pot" of almost every fantasy setting existing. Now with the new Warhammer Total War getting me quite hyped and interested in the universe again , finding this channel (with your to me pleasant way of speaking, soothing background music and nice choice of artworks) has really been a great discovery and shown me the great lore that actually stands behind the Warhammer universe.
So thank you very much for these awesome videos, and please keep them coming.

One thing I would like to mention Sir Arch is that, Bran Stoker's Dracula, could survive in sunlight. In fact there is no evidence that it is even painful for him to be in sunlight. According to the book itself Dracula is simply weaker in sunlight than in darkness. He also needs to rest on occasion to restore his abilities, but sunlight is not a problem for the Bran Stoker variety vampire. Although garlic and a stake through the heart do work on him, as well as a good old fashion crucifix, Dracula and the three female vampires that accompanied him were fairly powerful beasties.

Wait.. could you turn a High Elf into a vampire? Because if you need to feed on a dragon to cure the blood curse, High Elves could get you relatively easy access to dragons if you turn the right pointy-eared SOB. Or if you turn one who turns another until you've got the right people. That would have made an interesting story.

Vampirism doesn’t actually come from chaos at all. It’s distantly a bastardized version of Nagesh’s ritual of immortality if I’m remembering correctly. Iirc one of his followers made a flawed elixir of immortality and in much like the Chinese and gunpowder they didn’t exactly get immortality but what they did would change the world forever.
@@cameronjames3499 Khorne would heavily disapprove of the fact vampirism and vampiric life revolves heavily around magic and necromancy. Not blood magic, but all schools of magic and that would infuriate Khorne so bad he'd sooner see his creations destroyed - so it feels pretty much impossibly for it to be Khorne. You have to remember that even their more brutal and savage vampire forms are essentially buff necromancers. Strigoi. They still use necromancy.
abhorash, the blood dragon is basically the vampire version of chuck norris. I looked him up on the war hammer wiki and the dragons fire did not even burn him. I would love a game where you can play as him.

4:30 Funny enough, the whole "weak to sunlight" thing was a more modern thing with the dracula rip-off known as Count Orlok in the movie Nosferatu. The real Dracula (not the crap rip-off one) doesn't die or even gets injured in sunlight, he just loses his powers and becomes akin to a mortal man. Quite interesting how a knock-off managed to influence mythology that much.
Also the whole thing about new vampires are weaker than older ones may be negligible as it's been said in the lore that the older a vampire gets, the stronger gets as opposed to a human who gets weaker the older they get.
Yeah but a first generation vampire would still be stronger than even the oldest of later generations that's what he's getting at. Also it's more about keeping the bloodline going that's why most of the vampires don't turn anybody and everybody

I'd forgotten that Warhammer Vampires are essentially Anne Rice style ones. Having been away from Warhammer for so long and coming back to find storm of chaos and end times and whatever the clusterfuck they have going on in this age of sigmar shite just made me forgot that Warhammer used to be cool.

ok storywise he just fought a big red one and won and drank his blood, and then he never had to drink blood again from anyone. so he send his line out to train and test their martial prowess so they can get rid for the need of blood. When they have done so he will call them back and they will go to war. I just want to know WHICH MOUNTAIN he lives!!!
actually garlic should still hurt vampires because it will act like poison or gas to them because of its properties, and people tend to forget that

how do khorne worshippers view vampires, do they not care or do they not like them more than others because they think blood is for spilling not drinking
Now when i think of a vampire i think of victorian era vampire, like a well groomed, long straight hair, higher up in society seducing women type vampire very skilled in combat. Are there vampires like that in warhammer? Not just the bald headed nosferatu looking vampires that are terribly ugly. I see a lot of artwork of the bald ones but i do occasionally see a long haired badass armored looking vampire with a beastly looking sword but im still trying to grasp this rich lore.

Wicked Vampire I do hope that they do them justice, but if you like this lore, I suggest you start reading up on 40k. I know, I know, fantasy in space? But it's really great and a lot more fleshed out in many ways.
There is an excellent board-game that promises tons of fun called Relic. It really gives you an incentive to explore the lore of the titanous chaos space hulks, the endless swarm of the tyranids who enter the galaxy at many points (indicating they've already taken out the rest of the surrounding galaxies), the Orks and their gigantic kill kroozas, etc. (Not to mention Kairos the fateweaver making an appearance, the garden of nurgle, maze of Tzeentch, the palace of Slaanesh and the Hall of Khorne making an appearance.)
Also it's got the cooler version of the vampires, the Nekrons.
If you like Warhammer lore, and you like sci-fi, you'll love Warhammer 40k. Just saying.

Wicked Vampire I used to share that view for a long time, collected Warhammer as a kid and was way into the lore. It's only in the last couple of years that I discovered how intense and deep the 40k universe is.
Really, give it a shot. Me and every one of my close friends have recently begun to think of it as the best fantasy/sci-fi universe in existence.

Well Dwarves are... dwarves, they are kind of resistant to Magic, and raising them is more trouble than its worth.
And Orcs... welll Silvania and the Orc wastes are so far away from each other. Getting your hand on a dead ord is to much work when there area always plenty of dead Humans around.

Also I'm going to assume Orcs fungal nature could either cause them to bot be able to be raised in death, or at least makes them incredibly difficult.

So, Blood Lines gets weaker the more people are made vampires, but the Blood Dragons are far more liberal than most bloodlines when it comes to recruiting... but then how can they remain such powerful fighters?
Also, if Blood Lines are doomed to get weaker as they proliferate, does that mean that the Blood Lines will eventually become so weak over time(even if it might take millenias) that they will just disappear?
I imagine that even immortal creatures as vampires will suffer losses over time, especially in such a violent world as warhammer.
SinerAthin well think of it this way. gen 1 gen 2 gen 3. if a gen 1 sire a vamp its a gen 2. if a gen 3 sires a vamp its a gen 4. if the gen 4 sires its will be a gen 5. but if the gen 1 keeps producting gen 2 the bloodline will remain strong.

SinerAthin its also presumable that those who are "recruited" by the blood dragons are already powerful fighters in their own right. war is all around and an ample recruiting ground to those that show their worth and being vampires would allow them mobility within the shadows. a soldier who fought valiantly might consider vampirism if they've been mortally wounded.

You talk about the one group of vampires (the ancient looking sorcerer ones, I cant spell any of the names) who want to make a spell to turn everything into undead servants. Do they have a plan on surviving after they do this? You say they are resistant to the blood thirst but still have to feed, will they keep a few living things as slaves to feed from? Thanks.
They can use dark magic to sustain their bodies, but not the same way as blood, hence the withered appearance.

Tuedon when I went to pick up my vampire the masquerade book from the local game shop, back when it was first released and I was in that dark/edgy teenage phase, there was a Warhammer game being played, elves vs dwarfs I think. But one of the player's buddies was reading the vamp codex.

Arch, i love your videos and i think some of them are masterpieces, covering the whole history and "feeling" of the race/faction. But i found this video lacking much of the politics of the vampire counts, having focused maninly on the vampire aspect. How do the counts organize themselves, by blood lineage? who they fight and why? how do they relate with other races. I have seen many of your other videos, and some of them covered all of these aspects. Anyway, great job!

P.S: The bloodline weakening don't work on a Generation patern? Like the progenitor is the purest blooded (meh) then all people he gives the blood kiss to are more weakened but still very powerfull and then once these vampires gives the blood kiss the blood line is weakened again and so on...

Objection! Sunlight does kill warhammer vampires. It's a matter of willpower. Those strong enough can't be killed and some can't even be harmed at all by sunlight though most do burn up from the inside out
From the dragon blood, I am curious if it is the physical blood or if it is the life-force or soul that they are consuming. Or if it is the natural magic that blood contains.
I am also curious as to what would happen if a vampire was to be dropped into one of Khorne's rivers.

holsson85 Many vampires do cultivate humans as cattle but they very rarely drink directly from the human due precisely to the risk of killing the relatively valuable cattle.

If say Vlad von Carsten created a new vampire would that new vampire weaken the Carsten blood line, or does it work by generations so as it goes Vlad, Manfrid, random chuckle fuck #8... the levels of vampire become weaker. Vlad is stronger than every other Carsten and Manfrid is stronger than most.
Do you think there is a way for a normal vampire to obtain the same innate power as the founder of their bloodline? Like a 4th generation von Carstein finding a way to gain the same power Vlad got when he was turned with the cursed elixir of life.

Jakob Schöning they can feed on them just fine but in the case of beastmen and orcs the taste is akin to drinking rotten maggots.... and no, only humans can be turned into vampires.

These are now foremost & forever my favorite faction, I have been vampire aficionado since I saw the late Sir Christopher Lee portrait of Dracula but the crown of the vampire king still belongs to Bela Lugosi, that & I'm Romanian, and Vladislav Ţepeş is my childhood hero! :D
But I like how they decided to take there origins back to the original which was Egyptians, as the oldest scriptures date back to ancient Egypt with regards to the "undead", in particularly vampires, they are often described as rising from there graves to feed of the life force, of Ka's(spiritual strength) of there victims, sunlight can kill them in that part of myth, since Ra was the Sun God in the Egyptian pantheon & its leader, and did not tolerate there existence, in most case these souls were the most heinous among people that or individuals who dabbled in dark sorcery & other things like. Now we also get a bit of Greek mythologies int here origins mixed with some Persian in the form of the Lahmians, Lamia was woman in Greek mythology who was a priestess that seduced Zeus & Hera cursed her to kill her own children & bring ruin to any & all men she encounters, usually by destroying there lives before feeding on them, she appears in a Persian form by the same name & same story, but she mostly is remembered in modern day Christianity as Lilith. The Strigoi is obviously taken from my country, love them :), but there origins are some what similar to Draugr from Norse myths, a Strigoi is made when a Dacian/Thracian dies on the battle but is denied access in the kingdom of Zalmoxis, there king among the gods & god of earth, they are then condemn to feed, other usually are made from acts of sins, such a suicide, murder, fratricide, etc. or sorcery, the name roughly translated mean to scream, there more historically realistic origin might be tied to certain species of now extinct nocturnal fauna, bats & owls, perhaps barn owls, there screech is quite terrifying, while the Blood Dragons are reference to the Order of the Dragon, of which both Vlad & his father were member & along with the other von Carsteins are a tribute to the classic Dracula style vampires, while the Necrachs are the Egyptian ones I mentioned above,.
I most cases killing vampires usually requires destroying the grave, stake tough the heart does but it has right though the spine & out the other end from the back, like fully piercing the chest, silver burn & beheading, some of these are also adopted in the case of Asian vampires, burning the body & scattering the ashes at either a crossroad or holy ground, religion is irrelevant as long as strongly frequented as the spiritual strength of that place can remove that of the vampire, well unless he is older then grounds them selves, holy water, not unless its spring water, deep rock, volcanic passing through a silver vein. Holy Symbols are useless, unless they have implanted with a spiritual & or psychic output, think of it like lets say G.R.Martin or Tolkien giving a first edition copy of there books & you passing them on to there kids.
Btw. in the Dracula novel & some of the books, particularly the Francis Ford Coppola it has been showed that sunlight does dot hamper a vampire or is anything of weakness nor do it hurt him or her, but in the Vampire the Masquerade its the true death. But then again Dracula chose to become a vampire in most cases of the books & movie, etc. so that tend to explain his immunity o it,
