Great video, I’m a You Tube certified mechanic and you just gave me another certificate. Keeping my 2006 Pilot with 298000 miles alive one part after another. Did water pump timing belt and tensioner last year. This looks easy compared to that job.
Changed the alternator on my 06 today using your video as a guide. Very helpful instruction. No more battery light and the system is charging. Now I just need help convincing my wife that I get to spend the money we saved on tools!
Great job, better than i seen with other videos... I'm about to do the exact same thing with my son's 2007 Pilot. He paid 270 for the alternator.. and I'm doing the labor... You right... Family matters!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for showing this approach! My mechanic was saying that the radiator must be removed to access the alternator on my 03 Pilot. If he refuses to try this method, Im finding another mechanic.
I just did my 2011. The cable harness was an ABSOLUTE BEAST ... hardest part of the job. My harness bundled three cables together, and they were very difficult to disconnect and reconnect. Use a hook tool to deal with the boots. Another thing I had to do was disconnect the power steering hose to get at the serpentine belt. That was also pretty tough, detensioning the belt. I used a breaker bar exactly like in the video, but it took FAR more force than it looks like in the video. It took all my weight, leaning on that bar, and I am 250 pounds. Finally, there is a bushing on the lower clevis that has to be reseated in some cases, before the new alternator will fit. That process is described elsewhere in these comments.
My alternator just failed on my 06 pilot, your video was extremely informative. Details about the important things and no unnecessary talking about things that have nothing to do with the repair. Thanks for a great video!!
Thank you for this video. My pilot was stuck at my family's cabin in a remote area and I watched this video and replaced the alternator saving me tons in towing and repair. I have just now completed it doing your step by step. Again, thank you very much, we really appreciate it.
Thank you for the detailed but no-fluff explanation. I can see you took effort to provide shots from different angles and to zoom in as needed to help people to see things that are difficult to see on other repair videos. This is extremely helpful. It gives me enough confidence to tackle the alternator on my Pilot. You are a great asset to this community.
My Pilot is an '05, only difference (if anyone is curious) is the tension pulley bolt head to take off the belt is 14mm, and the small bracket on top where the harnesses sit...still 12mm, but the bracket is smaller. Other than that, everything else is exact! Great video! Straight and to the point with no fluff. A very easy step by step guide to help you save some big $$!! Thanks, Boss!!!
I have a 2005 and had the exact same belt removal issue. 14mm to the tension pulley! I almost gave up on this project until experimenting. Besides that, spot on. Also, the bottom bolt is tough and I needed a 14mm deep socket to loosen it up. Extender was too long, regular socket was too short.
Also have 2005 Pilot EX-L (J35A6 engine) and agree with above differences from video. Want to add that smaller bracket where wire harness sits (and 12mm upper alternator bolt inserts into) does not need to be removed because when you loosen this12mm bolt (closest to firewall of two bolts) it will swing up and down, giving more room to take out old alt and put new one in. Discovered this after much time and aggravation trying to get new alt in, after much work removing old alt with bracket bolt not loosened. Had even tried loosening the bolt next to it closer to radiator which did nothing, before discovering and finally loosening somewhat hidden other magic bracket bolt ! Loosening it makes getting new alt into place much easier....and did not have to deal with any bushings on bottom bracket mount being pushed out blocking install. Original alternator, was Denso, lasted 193K miles, 19 years...AutoZone replacement was rebuild, $140 after core return ($40), and $40 discount. Thanks so much, Jo Daddy...great video instruction and calm demeanor inspired me to save dough and take on this job.
What a great opportunity to share that how to on how to replace an alternator on a vehicle. Nice job as always 👍I'm sure somebody out there will benefit from it!
Excellent video! I completed the replacement in under 1.5 hours, and I am a hobbyist mechanic at best. The biggest challenge is seating the bottom of the alternator as the bottom of the alternator must fit between two mounts on the engine block. You can see from others' comments that some remanufactured alternators don't easily slide between the mounts. We used an angle grinder to take off 1mm of the end of the bushing sleeve on the alternator. We could have easily used a metal file. Once the bushing was smoothed over, the alternator slid easily into place.
Video is well done. I experienced the same problem on a 2005 with the lower bolt and the protruding bushing sleeve. Once original alternator was removed, I wrapped 6 cotter pins around the lower bolt shaft then tightened to pop the bushing sleeve out (this technique was discussed in another TH-cam video). I swapped the bushing sleeve to the other side then installed the new alternator.
My son has a 2006 Acura MDX, basically same as the Pilot. Like you, it carries around my precious ones. Last fall I did the timing belt, water pump, engine mount, rear window motor, etc. Had no time to video it though. Love the videos, and your being a stand up family guy. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent video! This gives me the confidence to replace the alternator on my daughter's 2006 Honda Pilot. This used to be our family car, then I upgraded it to something else and I was going to sell the Pilot and my youngest daughter did not let me. She wanted it! According to her, this SUV has so much sentimental value as this is the vehicle she and her sister grew up riding in. With proper care, these SUVs last for a long time.
Thank you for this video, it was very helpful. I will say that there was one important part you may have left out for this process, and that is how to push the grommet out where the bottom bolt goes into. Without doing this it is nearly impossible to get the alternator in there, or at least in my 2008 Pilot it was. Other than that, this is one of the better videos I've used to replace parts.
Absolutely right! I was extremely frustrated until I learned about the need to reseat that bushing. Reseating the bushing was easy. Just make sure you use a socket that fits over the flange of the bushing ... something like 19 mm or 3/4 inch. Then snug it down with a bolt and washers to push the bushing maybe 3/32 inch to the left. It takes like 30 seconds once you round up the hardware.
Hi Jo Daddy, I just finished installing a new alternator on my 06 Honda Pilot. Your video was right on the money, step by step!!! Save myself easily $500. You do a great service to all of us who like to tinker with their vehicle. Thank you!!!!!
I've done dozens of alternators over the years, but need to do one to my 04 Pilot. Anytime I do something to a different vehicle I like to look it up to see what little things I need to know. Most videos are garbage. I watched three on this subject that were terrible. THIS video was great! It was clear, detailed and you explained everything. I hate when someone does a video and just plays music and says nothing. Nice job! I'm subscribing to your channel.
Great video, just a little detail. The new alternator won't fit if you don't clamp back the lower mount. This is a very important step. I used pliers, but a 2'' clamp might work better
Bruh. Thanks. My radio code reset kept coming on. Then a few days ago the car just died while driving. Figured it was the alt. This video helped me with the steps to remove the alt. Great instruction.
It worked for us. We had a hard time putting the belt back. The way we end up doing it is we put some grey tape to hold the belt in place and and put it last in the tension one. We needed to do it between two people to get it done. Thanks to your video it helped a lot.
Great job I have the exact same car the only difference is that the bottom bolt of the alternator was 14mm in my case and the final test with the multimeter read 14 volts while the engine was running and 12.6 volts when it was off. Thank you very much
Great video, very thorough! My alternator just went this morning while I was headed north for ice fishing, so I'll be doing a swap later today, thanks for posting!
hi Joe, I really like your instructions how to replace the honda pilot alternator and now I am about to put it into my practice on my honda pilot. Please keep up with your good work and I will follow up on you.
The video is straight forward remove and replace took me about 2 hours total time. Only difficult part I had is the putting the new alternator in place. Thanks so much.
thanks for this! I bought a rebuilt Honda/Denso unit from a very reputable local shop and will be installing soon. You have demonstrated that this is doable. Also I spotted that Amsoil sticker on your wall near the end of the video!!
muchas grcias por este excelente video mr Jo gracias muy maravillosa informacion y de aprendizaje para los que empezamos la mecanica, un millon de gracias por su paciencia.
Great video! Well done and especially in areas that are not always easy to video. Thanks for putting this out; the alternator in my son‘s Pilot just went out today. Going to order a new alternator and probably replace the serpentine belt at the same time while I’m doing it
Nice job! Very good explanation and visuals. Going to be doing my 08 soon so this comes in handy to see it once before I do it myself. Thanks for posting!
My man!! This really helped out tremendously on replacing mine on my 2008 Pilot! Quick straight to the point, and detailed!! Thank you so much for sharing!!
Amazingly well done video dude, thank you! I knew this was gonna be a great video when I saw your oil quantity placard on the odyssey 😂, You're a man after my own heart,I knew there was going to be great attention to detail. BTW, A great father-in-law always polishes out his daughter-in-law's headlights for safety 😂🤣. Good luck to you all, and congratulations!!!
This is the best with regard to detail. Here’s my two cents: the lower bolt on the alternator is a real bear. Loctite on it. You will absolutely need a long breaker bar or cheater pipe to break it! Also when both bolts are out the alternator still needs a couple of taps with a hammer near the top bolt hole to get it free. Also if available use 12 point 12 and 14 mm sockets to make it easier to get the breaker bar handle in the right spot to get the bolts started. I used 6 point and it was a pain and cost me a lot of time and curse words.
$568 ....cost from my local repair shop $980 from the dealer both reman alternators ....this video and the cost of a new Denso Alternator from O'reilly auto parts (not remanfactured) $320!!! Thank you for the assistance and savings
follow up....i found that if you unhook the power steering line at the upper pump (spring clamp) it gives much more room as well but be sure not to spill fluid on the serpentine belt and secure it up over the wheel well with a zip tie so it doesn't pop down and dump steering fluid all over the engine compartment. Also found that a 2 foot piece of iron gas pipe works really well as a leverage adapter for the 14mm lower bolt breaker and belt tension system release. slip it over the breaker bar or ratchet and it makes short work of both.
there is a slave that pushes in and out and helps tight the bottom bolt if u can get that out just a hair it will make it a lot easyer to get the bottom end of the alernator in so u can start the bolt easy other then that it will take a while to wigleing it back in like u had to taking it out and then the few mins taking out of the maze with the ps hose and ac line but other then that it was pretty stright forward
I wouldn't disconnect the battery of a newer car when it's running because it could cause a power surge and damage something, that's something people did on old school stuff that doesnt have computers. Even if you did that your alternator could still be putting out 12 volts and keep the car running but not be charging the battery so a meter is the best way to diagnose it.

Great video helped me out a lot on my 2008 Honda pilot. Sadly I can’t get the belt on cause the tension bolt is stripped and no matter what I do I can’t grip it enough to release the pressure. Wonder if you have any ideas that could help. Much appreciated.
This is one of the best, and perhaps THE best instructional video I've ever seen on TH-cam. And I've watched scores of videos on lots of subjects.
Thanks! Tips are welcomed. 😁

My goodness this guy makes this look easy. It's like an $800 repair. Sweet video! Keep them coming.
Saved me 650 cause I still had to buy an alternator but I’m this guys new biggest fan.
You know what would be cool in the summary above is a list of tools to have ready. 10mm, 12mm, 14mm and 19mm sockets, etc.
Good idea.

I would add to turn on the AC and check to make sure you still get a charge. Good step by step video. Thanks
Thanks Joe! I was able to take the plunge and make this repair myself last week following your very clear and direct suggestions and comments.
Great video, just a little detail. The new alternator won't fit if you don't clamp back the lower mount. This is a very important step. I used pliers, but a 2'' clamp might work better
This video is very specific and accurate for my 2007 Honda Pilot alternator removal. I’m sure I saved lots of money going DIY. Thanks for posting!
Best video I've found so far, changed my alternator yesterday thanks to it. Thanks a lot sir!

This was the go to video for me. Really appreciate your method and presentation. Subscribed!
Great work! I have the same truck with a good alternator but I’m watching your video in case it goes bad one day
Excellent job. Made my work painless.
Great video. I've always performed MOST of my own repairs, but I like to refer to "TH-cam University" to pick up any tricks or shortcuts. Well done.
Good video instructor very patient and thorough
Thank you so much for taking your time to help us out!!, Cheers, Alberta Canada!.
muchas grcias por este excelente video mr Jo gracias muy maravillosa informacion y de aprendizaje para los que empezamos la mecanica, un millon de gracias por su paciencia.

THANK YOU...for sharing. Fantastic repair. #1 Father-in-law.
Great work, great camera angles. I know that took a while, so thank you-very helpful!
the best and the better video than another
Good job Barry. Pleasant video to watch. Thanks.
Brother Thank You !! Will Be doing this as everything closes down Louisiana CoronaVirus LockDown 2020
Felicidades excelente trabajo,

Loved the video, man! You were very detailed. This was the best one I watched and I watched about 6 of them. 🤘
Ty for this i would of paid prob $200 to get it done instead doing it myself. So proud thanks to u.

Awesome work, if you want to add Apple Car Play to your factory radio Thank you for the content
You are AWESOME!! Thank you SO much. Your walk through was perfect
Nice work very professionally thanks
Great video. It helped me out perfectly for my alternator replacement on my pilot as well. Also, was that iron man sitting in the hood at the end lol
Iron man is always hanging out in my shop.
VERY COOL FLASHLIGHT , AND GREAT JOB .
Broke down away from home. Saved my butt
phenomenal!!!! about to work on mine right now! thank you so much
It was very helpful and you did it very detail and thank you for your video, great job and well done. 👍♥️
Great video, Barry.
Good info video Barry on this thumbs up.
Great video and highly informative! Thank You very much!!
Thanks for the detailed video!
Very informative. Thank you
Great Video. Excellent walk through!
This will help me a lot … A BIG THANK YOU
Very well done video. Thank you.
Thank you! Solid video. Very helpful.
Awesome video the only thing I would have changed is I would add some antifreeze 22:36 🤔🤣
Thanks, you save me a bunch.
Thanks a bunch....
This reman alternator has a 1.9 star rating on Oreilly's lol. The "lifetime" warranty doesn't cover labor of replacement, so they bank you returning maybe once or twice before realizing that.
That may be the case. It’s still operating on the same one today.
Thank you for the video really helped me to replace My alternator
Family first,, God bless you!
The original OEM alternator is much better quality than the after market one. I always just replace the carbon contacts and it is good to go for another 80K miles.
Very good vary i'm love the mecanic job thanks for shomy
Great video! Thank you.
Great video helped me out a lot on my 2008 Honda pilot. Sadly I can’t get the belt on cause the tension bolt is stripped and no matter what I do I can’t grip it enough to release the pressure. Wonder if you have any ideas that could help. Much appreciated.
Sorry to hear that. Are you using a regular socket or wrench?
