Opening up the Tunnel Access on my Scenic Ridge N-Scale Layout--modifying the foam supports

- I've returned to finish out my earlier Scenic Ridge layout by making it easier to access the internal parts of the tunnels. In my planned move to attach this and my other small layout (the Conejos Valley RR) together, it was impossible to reach into the entire tunnel area. Thus, I hollowed out the mountain extensively and covered up the large voids inside. Objectives for This Video were
1) Demonstrate how easy it is to modify layout's internal foam structure
2) Show recent work on the Scenic Ridge and what more has to be done
3) Get the trains running again
Good job!! Keep the videos coming.
Thanks, I plan to keep the videos coming!
I get why you did everything you did to get a better access. The only thing I didn’t agree with was taking that little foam support section underneath the track. I would’ve left it. Other than that nice job.
I don't think it was enough of a structural support as long as the base stays steady. Trains are very light and shouldn't be a problem. But I thought the extra 1/4" opening there was worth it. If I have problems, I'll solder all the joints on both sides. thanks for the comment.
I find the gradients on the Scenic Ridge are far too steep. Causes slipping and really reduces the amount of wagons you can pull.
My fix was to rework the entire front rail to reduce the gradient. Even then I can only pull 2 coaches without slipping.
Yes, you are correct the grades are high at 4% and many people suggest you keep them to 2%. Is it possible to weight your engines a bit more? I don't run passenger cars--too big for a layout like this. I haven't tried to estimate the number of cars I can pull, but have had 6 or so in the past. Something I should look into.

Tear it all down and start a new smaller, more manageable layout.
