Would like some info from young man who is active in voodoo religion. Many years ago while in new Orleans my family and I encountered someone we later saw online called "the chicken man".Has anyone ever heard of him.we had an interesting experience involving him.
Thanks for watching more of our videos, Liz! If you know of anyone else who might also enjoy these videos, please do share us with them. We would really appreciate that! Thank you.
I think if more people talked about history the way these 2 do, we as a nation would be better off. It’s accurate, honest, it can make you uncomfortable, but it also shows that we can all be united in moving forward. Slavery isn’t unique to the US, the vast majority of human kind comes from people who were slaves at some point in history. Slavery exists today as well, in 2024. We all would be better off having a full understanding of how it affects the minds of people today.
This is so interesting. Plantations are often romanticized so Robi's perspective is an incredibly important cultural aspect of history that is usually glossed over or hidden. Thank you both.
The “focus on the furniture” shaaaaade. So very necessary though! I visited Oak Alley yesterday (escorting friends who have never been exposed to plantations) and we couldn’t believe all the carousing going on while people were touring through the slavery exhibit. Abominable. Thank you, Robi and Andrew for keeping it real.
Unbelievable that some people first think, "Wow, such beautiful trees and plantations" and to me, I can only think of the pain and suffering that is entombed within those grounds. The horror that those trees have experienced 😩 Robi, thank you and your family for always teaching the true history of these locations. 🙏
WE see your virtue signaling. Trees, fields, and brick and mortar structures are inanimate objects and are not guilty of the sin of slavery. That would be humans. Those people have been long gone. So stop attacking the innocent. You would not say the same thing about the White House. It was built with slave labor.
The plantations are still beautiful, though. Sure, there was pain and suffering, but that does't exist there now. We should be able to appreciate the beauty that it there today as well as learn from the past.
I agree. Be awesome to have a NEW TRADITION.A yellow and black tie affair to raise funds for educating the public on slavery - like Seattle has a SUGAR TAX so they can educate people on the harm of sugar. Seriously, we should educate people on the HARM OF HATE. Many blessings
@@Kay2be2mr those weirdos exchanged marriage vows on the freakin cotton docks. Blake also ran a blog that romanticised the shit out of the antebellum south.
I imagine they hold weddings, events, etc to raise money to run these places. Admissions and gift shop revenues probably are not enough revenue each year. Like it or not, they are historical sites. Much history there, much of it sad. They should all be upfront about the lives of the slaves there. I went to Oak Alley in 2003 and enjoyed it because I like historic sites, birthplaces, cemetaries etc.
Whitney Plantation refuses to do events/weddings. I read that Laura did them in the past but was making an effort to phase them out. Our tour guide from Laura did talk about the architecture and the family but she also talked about how each family member abused or interacted with the slaves. She also split it in half between the house and the slave quarters so it was well rounded but Whitney was still my favorite. They are the only two I could find that aren't advertising weddings. I would like to go to more of these plantations but I'm not spending my money on a business that allows people to celebrate on grounds that enslaved people were tortured on, when their masters also danced and celebrated as they were being tortured. It's tone deaf.
I loved this video and I loved that you guys actually focused on telling real history. I went to a planation tour the first time I went to NOLA and the guide never mentioned enslaved people. She talked about the furniture and the rooms and the how happy the family was when they lived there. I asked about the daily duties of an enslaved person and the guide got mad. She didn't want to acknowledge them at all. I was upset and frustrated at that, so thank you for this I feel my anger was validated and I am not the only one who feels that way. Thank you for this wonderful video
It’s insane to me that this is still the case. But it’s only been 160 years since the Civil War and that’s really a tiny amount of time in historical terms, so I guess it makes sense that there is still so much racism and denial.
Isn't it ironic that a lot of this nonsense is still happening today. Just look at what the Republican Party is doing, trying to whitewash history by banning books and forbidding teachers to tell the truth about the ugly history of this country. It's the same script different cast. If you ask Republicans or some white people about slavery, or how black people were treated in this country, they get mad and deflect and tend to want to change the subject. But the voices of the past will not be silenced. They will continue to speak even if some refuse to hear.
Yayyyyyyy!!! I love Robi and I am so grateful he shared his history of Myrtles Plantation with me when I went on his Voodoo tour on 4-15-2018 (my birthday). He taught ne sooooo much and he is such a super nice person. Thank you Robi 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for watching, Aprille! If you know of anyone else who might also enjoy Robi's videos, please do share us with them. We would really appreciate that! Thank you.
I've been to this area and toured many times.... I am FASCINATED by these two presenters and their INCREDIBLE talent for telling the history. I have learned more from these video presentations than I ever did by in-person tours. You guys are treasures! Robi and Andrew need to be hosting T.V. documentaries for PBS! You present things in a way that is beyond fascinating. THANK YOU!

Robi!!! You have me over here yelling at my phone 😂. I swear! Like in your family, the same in mine! Lots of old Gaelic/Irish/Scottish/Welsh names in our families. Product of tri-racial peoples (African/European/Native). Thank you, Andrew for this series so much ❤️.
A couple of years back we visited Whitney Plantation. Having family who came to the Edgard area after the Grand Derangement (1757) I was particularly interested in the history of the area. Our guide was extraordinary - he was brutally honest about slavery which made some of our group uncomfortable; one couple denounced it all as fake news and left the tour. I think they probably would have been happier at Oak Alley. This place is the real deal - throw away your preconceptions of the life at Tara and be ready for your heart to be, well, broken.
I’m white and my partner of 23 years is black and even after being with him for all these wonderful years I will NEVER know what it’s like being black in America. Robi, thank you so much for enlightening us on the live oaks that are in a circle. You and Andrew are so knowledgeable that it’s stunning and incredible at the same time, thank you both. I will say that we travel to a lot of cities and New Orleans is where my partner is most comfortable and said he feels most connected. We are so thankful to you guys.
This is my first video of yours that I’ve watched, and I’m absolutely impressed with the knowledge you both have. Oh man!! I’d love a sit down with you guys. People need to learn more about the real stuff that went on.

Would like a video where Robi and Andrew trace their roots ... All researched in advance. I'm sure your families have most of it done. Many questions, though, were never asked. You two could ask & get answers to those questions.

Robi I don't know you but you are one heck of a super guy. I am 75 and my family was farmers. I grew up picking cotton along side my parents, siblings and many that had family that came from slaves. I loved listening to their stories and got me hooked on history. My parents taught me as a young child that we are all God's children and we came from the same "Father". Andrew thank you too. You both are awesome. I am glad NOLADEEJ mentioned you'll. Thank you'll.
I greatly appreciate this. I'm planning a trip to New Orleans and specifically wanted to go visit a plantation to pay my respects. So I'm very glad that y'all have included the kind of focus that each place has so I can determine where I want to visit and not be expecting different content

We visited both Laura and Oak Alley last week on a tour bus from New Orleans... we enjoyed the Laura tour much more... but next visit we plan on going to the Whitney. Btw, we have been watching your videos for a year and while we were strolling through Louis Armstrong Park last Thursday, we spotted Robi giving a tour. I wanted to say hello because i am such a fan but you were busy with your tour group. I was excited, seeing a local celebrity! Love your videos and New Orleans!

Doing the Laura tour while there, I was struck by how much the Laura family longed for the old world of France. If I remember correctly that was a huge driving force in the Laura narrative
I loved this, I've been back in the UK for a whole week now after visiting New Orleans me and my Wife visited Oak Alley, what a beautiful place it was, this just added to my knowledge that I picked up there from the tour guide, thank you both, wonderful video.

Ty Andrew and Robi, great info! I visited New Orleans and was not at all interested in a tour where they gave a romanticized version of plantation life. Thanks to this video I now know Whitney Plantation is the only one I want to visit

Loved your review of the plantations and giving us the real scoop on what they talk about. The furniture talk would infuriateme. I went to a re- enactment one place and needed a box of tissues. I did not know about the ring of oak trees. I learn so much from your channel.
Iived down the road from oak alley, in hahnville, louisiana, always wanted to see the inside of it. Its beautiful! If you went from new orleans to there, you drove toght by my apartment i lived in. .i would love to go back and visit those places !! When i was in higjt school, my dad , sister aand i went to oak alley one day. He parked, and he stepped over that little wrougjt iron frnce, it wasnt long until a guard came out and said we couldnt wonder atound the property. So, i never got to go back. This happened back in 73.

As usual you guys do not disappoint! Thank you Andrew, Robi and James for your enlightenment on plantation life. I will cringe every time I see a pic of a plantation wedding and never look at a oak tree the same. Please keep the videos coming boys!
Thank you for bringing us part two of the Magical Mystery Tour! I love it. I am so excited that there are so many incredible things to see within driving distance of NOLA. Last year I learned that the Laura Plantation was also the site where an author came to record the folk tales that the enslaved people were telling, and that's where the Brer Rabbit stories came from. They were Senegalese, I think. (Didn't mean to open up a whole other can of peas.) I am very interested in the plantation that focuses on slavery and the stories those people had to tell. I knew about Anne Rice and Oak Alley. So very much more than that to see. And now we will look for random oak trees. xoxo
Just got back from first ever visit to NOLA. What a great place. So much history and things to do. Visited the Oak Alley Plantation. Amazing place. The house was Louis’ house in Interview from a Vampire. Got to stand in the doorway where Brad Pitt carry’s out the slave woman before the house is burned. That however pales I’m comparison to what you feel when you hear the accounts of the slaves who lived on the property. Such a moving place.

I've got a vacation coming up and I really want to tour my city with either or both Andrew and Robi. You both do an awesome job and have ignited and interest in my city. Great job, as always.
Please do! Robi's tours are usually marked with his name on our public calendar. Andrew isn't offering as many tours as Robi at the moment but that might change. You'll need to reach out to us about him when you are here.
I just came across your video by chance. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and thank you Robi for sharing for family history and story. When I have visited some one these plantations in the passed I also noticed how they skimmed over the history of the slaves or sugar coated things. So again, thank for that!

We’re going to New Orleans at the end of the month. On Sunday we plan to go to the plantations down River Road. Wish I had Robi for our personal guide when we go out on Sunday I lived there but don’t have the knowledge that he has.
Very good video. Great to mention the National Writers Project. I actually found a book from it at the Metropolis Public Library, Metropolis, Il. It was very interesting and enlightening.

Another great installment and so important to share these stories on a medium that has the opportunity to reach people that otherwise might not have knowledge of the stories that shaped our past and now more than ever are influencing our present and future! Please continue to share these kinds of stories so that more and more people might understand more about our world.
Thanks again for watching, Shannon! If you know of anyone else who might also enjoy these videos, please share us with them. We would really appreciate that! Thank you.
It’s interesting to know that some of the plantations “focus on the families that lived there” while shying away from the subject of slavery knowing that those families did not flourish without slavery.

I worked in Jackson La for 9 months as a travel nurse and stayed at saint Francisville. I visited myrtles, rose down, Afton garden, Oakley, and a place with a lot of peacocks lol (forgot the name). I love saint Francisville. I’ve noticed a lot in people in Saint Francis and Jackson rarely visit New Orleans or even know a lot about it and vice versa so this is interesting. I love all your videos. Wish I had watched them before I came down. Thanks for Sharing all your knowledge.
Super new to this channel and I was glued to your lips. It's an important insight and talking and learning about it is essential for understanding and communication! I would love to see and hear more about Robi's take on history. Much love from over the pond.
I have been binging this channel all day since we will be in NOLA after Memorial Day and I'm scared to keep watching them because I want to book a tour and I don't want to spoil anything but it is all SO INTERESTING!! I love your and Robi's hosting style.
You guys are amazing. I have lived here in the New Orleans area for over 12 years, been visiting for 25 years prior to that. I have learned so much from your videos.
Thanks again for watching and subscribing! If you know of anyone else who might also enjoy these videos, please share us with them. We would really appreciate that! Thank you.
A lot of non-Black people always love the romanticism of slavery, but NOT the actual atrocious behaviors that our grandparents and parents told us about. They speak about the grounds/plantations as if the slave owner built the buildings or worked the grounds. The slaves did ALL the work. And if it hadn't been for them nothing would have been made or done. Thank you Robi for your insight.
Thanks for watching, Otter! If you know of anyone else who might also enjoy these videos, please share us with them. We would really appreciate that! Thank you.
This video was very important and informative for me. I appreciate your detailed information regarding the differences in the past & present knowledge to be gained between the locations. That is what’s extremely important to me. Learning who my ancestors were, how they successfully endured daily in this state of American bondage & what can be gained personally within me so that this can never be repeated is worth more than gold to me. Thank you so much for sharing your time and knowledge unto us all! Cease not for it is impacting many! Peace and blessings unto you! 💯❤️💪🏽🙏🏽✌🏽
Theres a couple of the houses on the plantations that ive seen on tv shows. They look so familiar 😯 I love Robi hoodie and every shade of blue is my favorite color😊

Very impressive video! It must be really shocking to be in these places where slavery took place. Thank you for showing us the real story behind the plantation tour.

You guys are the best!! Thank you for this video. I almost cried. We're going to New Orleans for the first time next week and there's so much to see! I told my hubby we need to dissect the trip into sections; food, music, history and architecture; and stick to one area per day. We're there for four days. Thank you so much! I'm so glad I subscribed to your channel. I'm learning so much of stuff I never knew. ❤️

Enslaved people instead of slaves! A right usage of the words in my opinion...loved the information! Never been in the US but feels like I have been on several tours now😎Much love from Amsterdam❤
These are fantastic tours. You guys have done an excellent job! I have wanted to visit these plantations and always wondered about how "sugar coated/sanitized" the tours were, since unfortunately many parts of American history are hard to hear and accept for some. I have family history in Louisiana that I have recently discovered and it has blown my head off of my shoulders. I want to know more. I don't want to be lied to. I want the full, raw account of how things went down when I go to visit historic sites, not revisionist accounts. I am surprised there's not a more organized road trip around visiting all of these plantations. There's no collective approach to delivering this history to the public. How unfortunate. America needs to see and hear this part of our history. It would make us better as a country. Understanding and compassion would be the byproducts of a visit to these plantations.
We love these videos.. It's like watching our virtual family now...keep them coming and thanks so much for your dedication to putting out quality tours..
Thank you guys so much, I love you guys so much!!! my father was from New Orleans, Sicilian, I am going to come, go there for sure.. it is interesting beutiful historical, I don't know why I feel kind of sad? Oh well I love you so much again thank you I!!🌻💛😇🥑🌲🌻🦮🐕🔥🐞* my great grandfather and grandmother came on the vessel, ship boat whatever that's why I am here
Excellent info. Louisiana Digital Library and American Building Survey online have historical interior pics of many of these plantations and their exterior buildings from the 1920’s and 1930’s too.
Thank you to both of you gentlemen for taking time to really educate the world 🌍 I am just now watching this video mean while listening to history being taught breathing was rough but pushed through to hear everything to things that I never taught in school.

If you are ever in Northwestern Louisiana check out Cane River Creole National Historic Park. Hopefully the interpretation staff have keep up the balance of the history.
I in my premarried life living on the Westbank of New Orleans being interested in the fairs and festivals along the River Road I visited several of the Plantations and took the tours. When I married my wonderful Wife that was African American and dark complexion was did not want to visit the Plantations for obvious reasons. When Hurricane Katrina caused the Mandatory evacuation of the Metropolitan New Orleans area we went to the North Central Texas area. My daughter being in the forth grade was asked her what Plantations were like. Well when she said her Mom did not want go . Well when we went were able to go back a year later my daughter asked me and my wife to go on a Plantation tour and we did go but my wife stayed in our car.
I visited San Francisco Plantation in 1989 as part of a college course trip. Unfortunately it's no longer open; the oil company that owned it stopped it's support. I'm planning a road trip to visit several properties (Whitney and St. Joseph are already on my list). Unfortunately, Evergreen is no longer open for tours and that was one of the top sites I wanted to visit. They're still dedicated to research on enslaved people and have an excellent web site with lots of resources.

Also, thanks for mentioning the restaurants in Vacherie. Check out B&C seafood, the food is great and it is owned by a local family. It is very authentic cajun food that I frequently enjoy.
Ya'll are so so amazing!!! I have learned so much while im doing my research to prepare for our trip to NOLA. Super appreciate ya'll! Any chance ya'll book private tours for small groups where ya'll bring around to some of these places. Your analysis is super invaluable and would love to have that experience.

Excellent as always! I suppose if people didn't think of them as cotton or tobacco plantations and thought of them as slave plantations instead they might be less keen to have a fancy-dress wedding in these places. I'm speaking from a level of almost zero prior knowledge on the subject but after watching this I think it's my duty to learn more , thank you for the inspiration!

Embarrassed to admit that I'm one of those people that fly right into and right out of New Orleans...you guys got me thinking though....🤔...my job related travel ban has been lifted so I'm toying with a Halloween long weekend visit...can't wait as I haven't seen New Orleans and been with THE GREAT PEOPLE OF NEW ORLEANS since Jan 2019....way too long!!!!🙈

History isn't meant to be comfortable. It's meant to be learned from, the good, the bad and the ugly. Well done guys.
Thanks for watching more of our videos, Liz! If you know of anyone else who might also enjoy these videos, please do share us with them. We would really appreciate that! Thank you.
@@FreeToursbyFootHQ ... I will definitely share
Absolutely!
@@imaginefaraway I'm Native and enrolled in the my Lakota tribe in South Dakota. You're preaching to the choir.
Isn’t it sad that this is still so unusual?
Robie you crack me up with
"unless you want to focus on the furniture" 🤣
Trees don't experience horror they are in fact just plants.
Yes, those oak trees have seen a dark time in US history. They also saw how humans have changed, evolved and tried to do better.
That’s what I think.. if you feel so bad.. go help someone today.. oh naaaww you are just one who wants to keep division. Sit down and shut up
It's unreal to think that events, celebrations are booked at these plantations. But thank you to all three for bringing us along! 🤗
We agree, Eva. Our pleasure.
I think Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively issued and apology for having had their wedding in one.
We are glad you found value in it.

I've been to this area and toured many times.... I am FASCINATED by these two presenters and their INCREDIBLE talent for telling the history. I
have learned more from these video presentations than I ever did by in-person tours. You guys are treasures! Robi and Andrew need to be hosting T.V.
documentaries for PBS! You present things in a way that is beyond fascinating. THANK YOU!
We would love to see them on PBS.
All good tours. Oak Alley gift shop has the BEST pralines! Whitney Planation was an eye opener from the slaves’ prospective. A must go place.

Robi!!! You have me over here yelling at my phone 😂. I swear! Like in your family, the same in mine! Lots of old Gaelic/Irish/Scottish/Welsh names in our families. Product of tri-racial peoples (African/European/Native). Thank you, Andrew for this series so much ❤️.
Same here! Watkins
I visited the Whitney Plantation 4 years ago. It was a sobering, serious experience that I highly recommend.
Thank you for sharing this.
Love love love your efficient and historically accurate tours! I’m so happy y’all don’t shy away from the dark parts of our collective past.

Doing the Laura tour while there, I was struck by how much the Laura family longed for the old world of France. If I remember correctly that was a huge driving force in the Laura narrative

Oh, Mr. Robi, I love you dearly. So thankful for you.

(Didn't mean to open up a whole other can of peas.)
I am very interested in the plantation that focuses on slavery and the stories those people had to tell.

Thanks for a well rounded view of the Other side
I visited San Francisco Plantation in 1989 as part of a college course trip. Unfortunately it's no longer open; the oil company that owned it stopped it's support. I'm planning a road trip to visit several properties (Whitney and St. Joseph are already on my list). Unfortunately, Evergreen is no longer open for tours and that was one of the top sites I wanted to visit. They're still dedicated to research on enslaved people and have an excellent web site with lots of resources.

Vacherie is my home town. It is interesting to see it from a tourist’s perspective. Thank you for featuring it. 😊
Also, thanks for mentioning the restaurants in Vacherie. Check out B&C seafood, the food is great and it is owned by a local family. It is very authentic cajun food that I frequently enjoy.
Glad you enjoyed it!
We are glad you enjoyed the video Amber. We will be extremely happy to show you around New Orleans when you get here. You can browse our tour selection here freetoursbyfoot.com/new-orleans-tours.

OMG! You are so right. I went to a plantation this summer in South Carolina, and I was so annoyed because they talked about the furniture excessively! I left.

That’s a good point.
I love all of your videos!
You guys are great!
You are so kind, Maya. Thank you.
awe.... that's my friend from Mr Gregories coffee shop! Love, Amy and Tangie
Cool! Some of the places I haven't visited yet.
