Hi! I’m Charlotte and this is Milk & Honey Life…your home for all things beauty, nesting, planning, and lifestyle! This channel is 100% sponsorship-free, positive and upbeat, and welcoming to all. Thank you for joining us, and please feel free to subscribe for new videos every week!
For the past two months I've been following as close to my Grandmother's skincare routine as I could piece together from my memories and research from the era. Grandma Charlotte was a beautiful 1950s dame from West Virginia and as a little girl I was so fascinated by all the "exotic" skincare and makeup products she pulled out of her mint green hard-sided suitcase every time she came to visit. It's been so fun for me to relive my memories of her with this routine, and it's been fun for my skin too! It's the happiest and softest it has ever been, despite the stressfulness of these times (and despite the giant zit I unabashedly share with you in this video -- lol). I hope you enjoy watching and feel inspired to ramp up your own feel-good bedtime skincare routine! Don't forget to tune in next time for my vanity tour :)

Let's not forget marketing and over consumerism nowdays. Our grandmas had great skin with just a few products and were beautiful with just a few makeup products. They had class. Over consumerism and marketing is something that is negative nowdays. Less is more and we don't need a bunch of products to be beautiful and have great skin. Taking advice from grandma's is the best

What was your grandmas diet ? Maybe you can replicate it and do a full day of eating 1950s grandmas style? Knowing what she ate all the way into her 90s would be fascinating 💝Thanks in advance.

Diet and water and not smoking make lots of difference in the skin

@@user-wz9yy4ek2hyes agreed. But sad truth is a lot of women in the 50’s smoked very heavily. And sometimes ate a lot of heavy foods. Here in Britain we’re I am from we didn’t eat a lot of heavy foods. As our culture and Britain at the time couldn’t afford it. But I think America had more available than we did. So they kind of needed to diet. I will say I do not have a sweet tooth and I think it’s thanks to being British. All the roast dinners and also Guyanese food from my dads side haha. But ever now and then I will have a bit too much cake or a few too many biccies so I am taking a leaf out of ur book on that note.
I had the privilege of getting my hands on the westmore beauty guide to vintage 1950’s hair makeup and beauty techniques thanks to abe books. Some of the tips are out dated and a bit rude. But they have so much cool advice in their that I do follow like doing the right makeup and hair for ur face shape. And using cold cream. And taking care of yourself. Taking time for yourself and making sure you look the best of your abilities. Manicured. Best outfit. Keep comfies for the house only. And I do a mini workout not to be toned or anything but just as an add on to keep my body fit aside from a 15-20 minute walk.
And I’m only 16 just turned and I am so much happier following a vintage lifestyle as I dress 50’s and 60’s and keep my makeup hair and outfits as authentic as possible. I do wet sets on my hair. Though I do wear it naturally curly most of the time as that’s it’s natural state 3a curls. ❤

I am 65 and have used all these products for years and my skin is awesome. People cannot believe I am 65. I never understood how "health conscious" people use so many face products with tons of ingredients on the bodies & face, yet basically eat rabbit food to stay healthy. The skin takes in all those chemicals....think about it! This was so refreshing to see a healthy skin care routine. Ponds Cold Cream is the best. Also, Ponds Dry Skin Cream is excellent for dry skin as a moisturizer with the blue top right near the cold cream. I use it all winter here in northern NY State.

@@normakarina5123 I use the Pond's Cold Cream to wash my face AM & PM. I use Oil of Olay lotion or cream in warmer weather after I clean my face with Pond's in the AM. I use Pond's Dry Skin Cream with the light blue top at night after cleansing with Pond's Cold Cream. I also will use the Pond's Dry Skin in the colder weather in the AM instead of Oil of Olay. I use Dove Soap and Dove Body Wash or Oil of Olay body wash for body cleansing. In the colder months, I will use baby oil all over my skin after my shower at night and pat it into my skin, maybe once a week . I use old fashioned noxzema in the blue jar and vaseline. It just works for me. I don't know my granny actual skin care regimen but I can see her dresser with the lace runner, the mirrored tray, bottles if Jean Nate and the power puff with the black bow on it, Benandre bath crystal ( the smell was crazy good, it could scent the whole house), Cotillion by Avon and Amino Pon Soap. My mom told me that Amino Pon soap was the only soap she used to bathe me in for the first 7 years of my life until they quit making it. Amazing the things you remember. Please do the cold cream comparison. That would be a great. What a fun video. Was grandma Charlotte maternal or paternal side? Have you tried silk face mask? I ordered mine from Lily Silk. I find them gentle on the skin and no break outs. Just some food for thought darling💞💕💗

Your grandmother looks lovely, and I love the relative simplicity of vintage routines! (I add some necessary modern touches for skincare like antioxidants and retinol, but otherwise it's so good and relaxing to keep it as minimal as possible.)
A word of caution about witch hazel: it can be quite the skin irritant and there are far better options now, especially for long-term use (although it's helpful that you have alcohol-free Thayer's, since I've read that even in low concentrations alcohol triggers skin cell death!--but it's still not advised because witch hazel is said to cause inflammation in the deep layers of skin, even if not visible on the surface). Today they say it should really only be used for things like insect bites and bruises short-term, not for skincare.
Instead, I use Cerave's Foaming Facial Cleanser, which is effective at removing the cold cream but gentle enough not to dry out skin (so great, since many cleansers are far too harsh and I think are a large part of our skin woes--I cringe at some of the ones I used in the past!).
The baby oil is simply mineral oil and like the Vaseline is a good occlusive moisturizer. And the calamine (zinc oxide + ferric oxide) I just learned about recently from a vintage beauty guide--and the zinc oxide is still in skin products today, because it works well! Ahhh, effectiveness without the expense! 😊

I never understood why my Nanny Bell (my maternal grandma) used calamine lotion on her face. After I watched your video, the memory came to mind, and I just had an ugly zit pop when I carelessly scratched it. I was breaking out like crazy, which is unusual for me. So, that night I took out the calamine lotion from my medicine cabinet and added it to my routine. By the 3rd night, I noticed a huge difference in those breakouts, and the sore from the nose sit finally healed. Also, the smell brought back sweet memories of Nanny. She was a practical, simple woman who raised 6 kids as a single parent working as a seamstress.

I watched this video and made a list for myself of the products. I used my target Circle earnings to purchase what I needed. My skin is not only soft, but it looks better an the dry patches are almost gone! I think the baby oil is the key. It really seems to help my skin drink up the lotions when I mix them together. Also, the hair brushing really works! I don’t do 100 strokes, but I make sure I brush in all directions. Thank you ever so much for sharing your beautiful Grandma’s secrets! 💕💕💕

I had dry skin prone to flakyness. I used to have this expensive Hyaluronic acid cream which was supposed to help. It didn't help long-term and I had to reapply. I tried my grandma's cream, the classic old Nivea. By my third use my skin balance went to normal. No more flakey skin. I am shocked a simple cream like Nivea that my grandma used to use healed my skin dryness more than the expensive creams. The craziest part is that Nivea has very simple ingredients, mostly just oils. A simple magic in a tin jar. 3 uses and my skin balance was back to normal. I had baby skin. I'm still shocked with this. It's the best cream for dry skin hands down.

Oh my goodness Charlotte, this might be my favourite video you have done yet ❤
As you know I have been developing my skincare line and had to put it on hold. It's absolutely amazing how much sense this all makes. I have had such a great love for beauty, skincare and skin correction. After all the study I have done, I learnt that they really did know what they were doing way back then. Modern technology definitely has its place but can definitely do more harm than good if not used correctly. More often then not a simple paired down routine is best and it certainly doesn't need to break the bank.
I love watching you as I find it so difficult to come across anyone as passionate and detail oriented as I am about beauty. Thank you for sharing and I cannot wait to see next weeks video xx
I would love to know what you have learned about vintage body care?? What have you been using?

I have just started doing a little night time skin care routine, I'm a mom of 2 young children and I don't really do anything for myself but I feel I need and should do at least this small thing for myself. Thank you for sharing this it gave me some ideas on what I might pickup at the store next time I go shopping.

I remember my grandma too. She used rose-scented products. The same powder as your grandma. Love Love this concept. When my sons have grandbabies someday I will too carry on this tradition. Lovely video thoroughly enjoyed. Learned a few tips along the way.

Thankful so much for your lovely video. I am 66 and many things you showed I already do....especially the dab of scent. Your grandma was a wise and beautiful woman. Her little nighttime tricks....and I'm sure day as well...teach all of us. NOT a LOT of a little...but a LITTLE of a LOT. Bless you. Love from Ontario Canada. Joanne

My mom is Swedish and has a lot of old school habits , when me and my sister were younger we had to brush our hair 100 times on each side . You are the only person I’ve ever heard that has done that or family members do that 🥰🥰🥰

The Grace fragrance is a floral aldehyde perfume. That is it has a powdery floral fragrance. Very classic. I believe Channel no 5 is also a floral aldehyde.
