Hair Shaving Ceremony | Journey to Becoming a Monk

  • The hair shaving ceremony is one of the most touching ceremonies. It's emotional simply because this is when it gets real. Once you shave your head, there is no turning back. You are one step closer in the process of becoming a Buddhist monk. This moment is so surreal. I remember there being so many people around. They came to show their support and be part of our transition; however, in the midst of the chaos, I remember having a moment where my life flashed before my eyes. It hits you that you are making a big sacrifice and letting go of your old life. And to be witnessed by our friends and family is truly magical. Words cannot describe this feeling. In Buddhism, ordaining to become a monk is one of the noblest acts. This brings a lot of merit to the person ordaining and to their family. With that said, I wanted to give you a glimpse into this beautiful ceremony. If possible, try to put yourself in our shoes. What feelings would come up for you to have your friends, family, and complete strangers shave your head? What would it feel like to let go of your old life? Watch this with an open heart and I hope you enjoy :)

I have had a beard most of my adult life. The one time that I shaved it off my kids said that I looked like a turtle! Needless to say I grew it out again immediately! It would be quite humbling to have it all shaved off and quite unsettling but would really signify my willingness to change. It would be quite challenging but I am moved by all of the love and support offered by all who participated in this rite. For your info: in the Eastern Orthodox tradition that I am from monks never cut their hair or beard after their ordination. Differing traditions but similar purposes. Love your videos- very beautiful and well done! ❤️

To understand why getting shaved is so emotional . . . We have so much of our identity wrapped up in our appearance. A lot of our appearance, we have no way to change (unless we have access to plastic surgery). For most of us, the thing that is the most malleable, that has a big effect on our appearance is our hairstyle. We can look younger, more hip or more conservative, or even more radical, simply by changing our hair style. When we surrender ourselves to the shaving process, we are giving up something very key to our sense of ourselves-we are giving up a piece of our identity. If we’ve struggled with identity issues in the past (“who am I?”), this will be especially challenging and emotional. Shaving my head would not be such a deal for me-I am pretty bald. But I have had a beard since I was 19,-and I am 64 now. I wouldn’t even recognize myself without my beard and luxuriant mustache! Big deal? You bet. Tears? Almost certainly.

Growing up I chose to go bald for around 2 years. My hair was always in the way, always itchy dry scalp, always growing too fast. I never thought of it having an emotional impact. I never imagined that it would make life easier on myself. I am not Buddhist or Hindu. I'm a Norse Pagan man, but this year, I made the conscious decision to shave my head bald once more. To incorporate the Monks' meaning of it. I have been rediscovering myself and my place in the world and I believe that no matter the religion you can incorporate another religions teachings into your own practice to create not only a better you but a more welcoming place for others too.

Hello! I apologize if you've been asked this numerous times- but after reading the FAQ of the IDOP program's website, I found that it forbids a monk from ordaining who is not heterosexual. How strict is this really? Because monks must be celibate anyway, would this be something that someone who is interested in this program really need to admit? Not lie about it exactly, but not necessarily share it with the application staff? The Vinaya is somewhat ambiguous about this anyway according to many Buddhist scholars, so I am just curious about your opinion as someone who has undergone this process. Thank you!

@@eyusleer5379 I'm not too sure. I'm new to thailand also but you would have to do some research. Maybe different budhists countries also is an option.

I suspect that this is not a judgment of homosexuality but just a concern with so many people of the same sex bunking together during the experience. At least I hope this is the case. Regardless- blessings to you!

@@mrchips96 Yeah, I imagine they had issues in the past with this. After doing some research, there are certainly monasteries (at least in the US) who don't care about your sexual orientation as long as living next to individuals of the same sex would not be an issue for you. I guess you know deep down if it would be an issue for you or not.

What if being free means to not identify with anything or anyone, starting with the person you see in the mirror? Rather than putting race, gender and sexuality at the crux of your identity (and everyone else’s). None of those things are even that interesting. What if this is what it means to “get over yourself”?

Hair is antenna to the universe, one can better let hair grow like yogis. Why buddist choose to shave? If it is about energy. One shave is enough after you chose the path of enlightment?

In Buddha’s times there were no camera and UTubes and Netflix etc., etc, and there weren’t such publicity when anyone becomes a monk. Nowadays, at least in the recent years, all this has become a big show. Women hugging the men who just had their heads shaved to join the path of priesthood. Cameras on little monks. As much as I like to see how lay people give up everything to become monks, I disagree the fuss everyone makes. It should be a low key affair. Calm and peaceful, less drama. Buddha was in a forest in India, slept in caves, on rocks and no electric, HE didn’t have a luxury life style, cars and vans to get around. Too much fuss corrupts the mind. Did Buddha cut HIS hair in a celebration? No. He cut HIS hair using his sword I believe and there were no cameras and had no other help. It defeats the object when people make such a fuss.

Yes the buddha time was different. The world is a bit different now and we need to adapt also. It's important to both understand and know the context.
