      I'm glad you mentioned Seven Pairates ^^; it is very "special" indeed. I have it in my collection and played it for a while, but for some season, didn't complete it..
      Still I'd argue it is a JRPG that just MUST exist. It insists on existing in our timeline.

    I got 7th Dragon and Stella Glow when they were doing an RPG sale on 3DS. Loved it and kept going and going. Even through the hidden bosses. Difficult but well worth the challenge. Also funny that two of the characters look like Beat from Jet Set Radio and Camilla from Fire Emblem Fates if you give them the right class/color combination.

    I've played a few games on this one and the previous list! Here are two of the most obscure ones I own that I didn't see on either list:
    Unchained Blades for the PSP and 3(?)DS eshop, with the latter one having great QoL improvements like a map. First person dungeon crawler where everyone is a monster of some kind (dragon, phoenix, golem, etc.). The difficulty can get pretty high, but it has some really unique systems in capturing minions from enemies you run across, and those minions are used for special battles, as well as for powering up your main party's spells.
    Avalon Code for the DS. Aside from standard action RPG attacks, your main method of interacting with the world is a book. You can use the book to open Code Scan on a person, monster, or object, and that gives you a puzzle grid that you can use to manipulate the target's condition. For example, you can add in the Sickly block to a really strong monster to make it easier to beat, or change a sick girl's fate by gathering Healthy blocks from other places and using it to cure her disease.

    I also seconded the recommendation for 7th Dragon Code VFD. I mean, what other JRPG allowed you to cosplay as Yami Yugi from Yu-Gi-Oh and take down real monstrosities with your trusty Deck and your Heart of Cards? None except this one!
    "My grandfather's deck has no pathetic cards, VFD! DRAW!!"

    Thank you for shouting out Dragon Star Varnir, I played it a couple years ago and it quickly became one of my favorite JRPGs, if not games in general. It's a masterpiece that deserves to be played. The battle system is unique, the worldbuilding is incredible, the story is insane but compelling, the characters are all well written, and the other systems the game introduces add a lot to subsequent playthroughs. There are so few games with this atmosphere, the only real analog I can think of in tone is Mary Skelter, and while I also adore those games, I think I like DSV even better and would feel better about recommending it to more people. Still searching for anything that can compare

    The MetalMax series is the one I really wanna dive into! As you know, out of any jrpg gamer, your word and suggestions are the ones I trust the most. You know how I love my Mechs! Dragon Star Vanir looks right up my alley! Sort of Arpg meets turnbase with even some tactical elements in there. Interesting! This is exactly why I love your lists! Thanks for making these brother!

    A JRPG video with DRPGs as recommendations? Instant sub for my absolute favorite genre. And the Undernaut devs, EXPERIENCE, have a decades long catalog of amazing DRPGs including the Demon Gaze and Stranger of Sword City. They rarely miss.

    Lost dimensions is also on available on steam. Its quite a good game tho, I do recomend it for sure.
    I think you should keep going with these videos, some really solid suggestions in comments here, many of the 3ds rpgs were really good but cant really get any attention today from newer gamers so giving them some time and saying they are playable on emulators would likely help. Id also like to give Ar Tonelico series a shout.

    Only played Metal Max/Grim Grimoire/Undernauts on this list and I’d 100% refer Undernauts if you like dungeon crawling at all. Good sense of progression and difficulty of the dungeon navigation scales perfectly. Lots of secrets as well if you’re willing to backtrack, very fun!

    7th Dragon III Code VFD... Me and my friend Vic played that over Skype together and it was hours and hours of fun I think I have to pick it up again for old time sake
    That said I think games we like would line up pretty well so I will definitely be trying at least a few of these! Particularly Lost Dimension, Marenian, and Ray Gigant!
    Excellent list, clean editing, great video

    A pretty quirky, sorta obscure JRPG that lives basically rent free in my head to this day is Okage: Shadow King on the PS2, It ended up coming to the ps4 emulator lineup and it's not particularly inspired gameplay wise but man do I love the art style and characters, The script (from memory) is pretty funny, It's overall a pretty pleasant experience albeit flawed, Luckily it doesn't overstay its welcome from what I remember. Overall a pleasant but obscure title.

    I got a physical copy of Undernauts on the Switch when it first came out... Still haven't played it, but hearing you praise it I think I might bump it up in my current backlog and give it a go... I am a massive Etrian Odyssey fan so it seemed like it'd be up my alley.

  • @ophidianmind333

    I'm a huge fan of Undernauts and it immediately became one of my favorite dungeon crawlers when I played it. The visual aesthetic, gameplay, atmosphere, music, and story are all great and it was a very pleasant surprise to discover that game. Metal Max Xeno Reborn is a game that I have on the Switch, but I haven't yet played it because it is part of my gigantic backlog. GrimGrimoire is excellent, as is everything that Vanillaware creates. I haven't played any of the others in the video, but they all look interesting and I even want to play Seven Pirates H out of curiosity. I have no shame. 😆

    • @HallowedBeThyGame
      @HallowedBeThyGame  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Man Undernauts is just that good! It deserves so much more love from the JRPG fanbase. But yeah I'm beyond stoked for Unicorn Overlord as Vanillaware just is always operating on all cylinders it seems lol. But if ya ever get a chance to try Metal Max I would really like your opinion on it. I know it isn't for everyone but yeah it just hit right for me.

    I was kind of surprised that Ar Tonelico franchise didn't end up on your list. This is a franchise dating back to the PS1 era with the 3rd and last in the series coming out on PS3. It is a peculiar JRPG that has a sort of mixed in date sim aspect to it. Combat dealt with physical attack/defender type and singing support/damage type turn based content. Required you to sync with your singer to increase their damage/support for you and unlock higher tiers when in battle. Outside of battle and via story progress you would build relationship with the singer to unlock their higher tier support/damage potential. Part of it was to dive into their mind space and help them overcome mental barriers and issues and it was just a very unique JRPG series that I haven't really seen replicated since or before.

    • @Kitkat5335
      @Kitkat5335 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@q306005 Yeah, I won't lie the dialogue got pretty cringe at times, but over all the concept of the games were different and actually worked well together. Heard the 3rd game kind messed that up a bit, but the first 2 I enjoyed.

    Lost Dimension and 7th Dragon Code are legit. I can vouch that both these games are so worth it. As for the others, I've heard good things about Grim Grimoire (and, yes, they all say the beginning is a bit of a slog but your investment is worth it). Xeno was more mixed so I might have to pick that up and judge for myself.

    I played Lost Dimension on PS Vita and loved it. Due to the traitors being randomized every playthrough, I was lucky to get the true ending on my second playthrough and was able to keep my best girl (Himeno) and best bro (Agito) on both playthroughs.
    I found out later that if you have PS Plus you can cloud save before the trial and if you mess up, you can re-download (save scumming) your save from the cloud as long as you have the cloud saves on manual upload and download until you get the traitor since it always auto saves.

    Not really obscure, since it was a bit famous back then, but an amazing jrpg that no one seems to be talking anymore is Eternal Sonata. That game needs to be ported to Switch, and maybe Steam, and maybe overdue for a new sequel/spiritual successor to the game.

    I don't know how forgotten or obscure it is, but if you're a Tenchu fan, Kamiwaza: Way of the Thief on Switch and PS4 is an oddly charming jank fest that channels it's PS2 roots hard, and I enjoy it a lot. So many odd games on the NSW, Cotton Fantasy is a fantastic cute-em-up, Kill La Kill iF, even if you don't know the anime, is an awesome arena brawler style fighting game, and just shmups in general are getting a ton of love lately too. Raycrisis/Rayersis Collection, Dodonpachi, Deathsmiles etc. And the Switch still has the best game of all time...

    So glad you mentioned Undernauts. I love 1st person dungeon crawlers, however it took a while for Undernauts to click with me since i been spoiled on higher budget 1st person crawlers and it felt like just playing a glorified spreadsheet simulator when it comes to combat. I eventually finished the game but it took a very long time since i could only play in 1 hour bursts before i went to play something else. Enemies barely react to damage they just flash and numbers appear and there are no animations for attacks its either a slash, or a brief slpash of light for a magic attack and since most of the game is like 80-90% combat. Having the combat feel lackluster is bad
    like i think if Dungeon Crawlers want to get more recognition, some more work needs to be done on the combat front. It doesn't have to be much, just little stuff i.e. smt 4 enemies had more reactions and movement they feel real. each one has slight variations on how their body moves when they breathe, some are in different stances etc makes it feel more lived in versus low budget games where it feels like a png set to gyrate back and forth on 2 anchor points, attacks good effects combined with variety of sounds all convey a sense of impact. Just crazy to me how a 3ds game released back in 2013 had a better feeling of combat (production wise) then new modern dungeon crawlers and it doesn't feel right.

      Here is a warning though if you aim to grind at all be prepared to see the bad ending there is a very strict time limit and if you miss it you will be locked to the bad ending, i suggest you make peace with getting the bad first and then use the levels you gained to reach the better ones, because after some point the time limit will disappear.

  • @shadowmaksim
    @shadowmaksim 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Huh, I've played five of these myself. I guess that checks out. I usually joke that I tend to play the more obscure stuff so I probably shouldn't be surprised.
    Let's see:
    "Genkai Tokki: Seven Pirates"
    Funnily, I played this through importing the JP-exclusive PSVita version. I agree with most people that it wasn't that good but I still have a particular fondness for it, probably due to playing it at just the right time. I was getting really burnt out from playing multiple long, in-depth RPGs back-to-back so it being relatively simple was just a nice refresher. It also being in Japanese, I couldn't read any of the dialogue or understand the story but I feel like that ultimately was a positive since whatever I came up with in my head likely was better than what was actually there. Well, that and already liking the artist who worked on the game, Mota, probably helped a bit.
    "GrimGrimoire"
    I never had the chance to play the original PS2 release but I did finally play it through the "OnceMore" re-release this past year. I didn't quite know what to expect since it was an RTS, a genre I don't really have much experience with, so it was interesting to go through to say the least. Was nice to finally experience one of Vanillaware's earliest games, even if it was rebalanced. Not to mention see what that one cameo in NIS's "Soul Nomad" was all about.
    "Dragon Star Vanir"
    I'm in a unique situation where I'm someone who doesn't absolutely loathe Compile Heart so I actually do like a decent amount of their offerings. Though unlike "Seven Pirates" above, "Varnir" I liked more for being a proper game. It's not perfect obviously and the soft time-limit still was something that stressed me out more than it should but I genuinely liked what was there. If anything, I found myself liking it more than its spiritual predecessor, "Death End re;Quest". CH also did this thing where they had all their mainstay character designers each contribute one or two characters so recognizing which character was designed by which artist was oddly fun for me.
    "Lost Dimensions"
    I think this might actually be one of, if not the, first games by Furyu I've ever played. It had a spiritual successor of sorts through "Monark" not too long ago. Pretty much had the same gameplay, with one particular ability getting the main focus and expended a lot more. Still find myself preferring "Lost Dimensions" over it though simply cause I find the setting more intriguing and the gameplay loop has less fluff surrounding it.
    "Ray Gigant"
    Geez, this takes me back. This was my first LimitedRunGames purchase, something I woke up early for to order since this was back when they did hard pre-set amount of copies instead of making copies based on preorder amounts. Sold out in like 20 minutes.

    I always appreciate seeing Metal Max Xeno and Reborn, as someone who loved both and enjoyed them, even reborn and its flaws, but as far as I know they won't bother making more because, there was a sequel in the works called "Metal Max: Wild West", which would utilize the combat of Reborn - and the whole reason of the remake, as far as I remembe - but was cancelled before Reborn was ever released, essentially killing any potential sequel. On top of that, when Reborn was released, they delisted the original Xeno from consoles (at least on ps4 it was delisted, unsure elsewhere) and now the only way to play it is to have a physical copy. Xeno is definitely the better version, but Reborn did fix a few issues...but also added a ton more. I wished we had more, but I doubt it will ever happen considering what they did.
    As for a small recommendation, I'd recommend Märchen Forest. It's a cute jrpg with a very simple combat, with the first chapter basically being a small walking simulator, then from it's from chapter 2 that the game actually starts out, and chapter 3 is even bigger and adds more mechanics. I really enjoyed that one, wish more people would try it.
    Also the Caligula Effect games are pretty good imho, but I can see people being turned off from some of the aspects.
