These gates are rather mechanically controlled. There is no barrier drive noise
I'm pretty sure there's an electric motor in there, everything seems to be driven off it.
I know these gates are electric, but this one is probably a mechanical case
I mean that they're electro-mechanical, that's what I think. The new ones seem to be that too. All of them can be hand-cranked, that's probably what the mechanical parts are for, along with the lockdown function.
I wonder what makes them stop and go.
This level crossing is not on the National Italian Network (Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, RFI) but it's on a private operator network, called Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE). This railroad crossing is Manually cranked by an operator, no electric systems. Only a crank and some cables and pulleys. This is not a FS64 crossing, but it seems to me a Grandi level crossing. Anyway it is one of the last working manually cranked crossings in Italy. On the national network all the railroad crossings are nowadays electric operated. In 2018 i guess this level crossing will not be there :(
