I’ve been a bluegrass banjo player for decades and I can say your assessment of the bass player is spot on! I’ve often said the bass is the most important instrument as not only is it the “bottom” we need but as I improvised licks and experimented with runs it was extremely important to “lean” against the bass. Good call on your part!
