      @@2869may - Yeah, I always blamed the great Sammy Hagar for the demise of VH... Sorry Sam, Eddie was already selling out. One of the top rock guitarists in history, and he's faking his way through some basic 1980's keyboards. Makes perfect sense to me. 😉

    • @2869may

      @@_Common_Logic_ Come on man... they just grew up... Van Hagar made some great music, weather you like it or not... Numbers don't lie... I was HARD rocker myself DIO was one of my fav's. Old VH was GREAT
      "Drop Dead Legs", "Everybody Wants Some", And The Cradle Will Rock".....
      But some new VH was good too..

    • @_Common_Logic_
      @_Common_Logic_ ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@2869may - Listen to the arrangements in songs like Everybody Wants Some, The Cradle Will Rock, Mean Street, etc., and then listen to the keys, bass and DRUMMING on the bubblegum, Talylor Swift love songs VH regurgitated when they "grew up". "Is this Love?" WTH?😄
      Music went mindless, fun, and "easy" to listen to in the late '80s, never recovering from the MTV effect. Not always bad, but it is what it is. Van Halen and bands like ZZ Top who's "top sellers" were arguably backed by a drum machine followed the trend.
      I'm Not blaming the 'logical' business decisions, but I'm also not letting the sonic results slide. Even fun songs in "jest" like "Ice Cream Man" back in the day had more flair and technicality then MOST of the later releases. Some of the better songs allowed to sneek through in the later years were actually written by Eddie Pre-1983.
      As record sales are concerned, you can't use the number with any real accuracy. Sales coincidentally SKYROCKETED across the industry in the the late 80's and continued to rise at unprecedented levels until the mid 90's when CD prices had hit 20 bucks and people had the ability to record them with NO loss of quality...
      The internet put the nail in the coffin, as most sales figures are figured by DOLLARS and not numbers. Game over. Due to this, the spike in music sales across the board coincidentally mirrored Hagar's years with VH. EVERYONE had a chance at their "best selling album" coming out in those years.
      5150 sold 11 million units (by most accounts) Britney Spears slung 20 million copies of "Oops! I Did It Again". VH was following a demographic. The money. FEMALES had also, for the first time ever started buying more music than men.
      The funny thing is that Oops I did it again was more "edgy" than a number of VH songs of the time. Hahaha.
      More proof of sales not being a good measure... Johnny Cash enjoyed his HIGHEST (by far) grossing album in 2003. That was AFTER he died with no new material. ;-)
      As for anything and anyone POST Hagar, no-one cared... Those sales (despite streaming) would never reach the Hagar or DLR days. They could have returned to the roots, but losing Anthony's harmonies and putting up with the unqualified nepotism (being Eddie's son fumbling his way through the catalog) was "jumping the shark".
      We understood the youth of the band and the trash talking of Eddie vs DLR, as BOTH were insane in their own right... But when they threw M.A. under the bus AND publicly trashed him, most had either given up on the brother's nonsense, or just focused on the VH they had grown up with.
      They SHOULD have taken a lesson from AC/DC. It can be done. I still love classic rock, but I'm a (weekend) jazz musician. I understand "growing up" (getting old). I'm just looking from a musical standpoint. I would have welcomed a "refined" VH as I matured, but I just was NOT impressed.
      My laptop is out of ink... I'm done. 🙂

It was the second single released from the record and reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. Despite the song being a hit, no video was ever filmed for it. My boss at my new job is a Van Halen fanatic, even named his first born Halen lol Needless to say, the music he plays all day is🔥🔥
    It's so cool you chose this one. It was just playing my last shift & I was like "Omg, I almost forgot this one!" Hadn't heard it in a minute & all these great memories rushed back! Awesome choice❤✌️

    I'm bobbing my head to this song which I'm so used to and I stop and think, you two are hearing this for the first time. Sooo cool. Other than Eddie's great guitar work is Alex's signature snare drum sound. So distinctively Van Halen!

    Eddie Van Halen was trained at the London school of music and was a concert pianist! He played all the key boards in this song! And his brother Alex was amazing on the drums!

    • @markherring3513
      @markherring3513 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think he was trained (or even lived) in London and never learned to read music, nor was he concert pianist. He came to America (from the Netherlands) when he was a child at around 7yrs old and, yes, he did have classical piano training as a kid but never gave full blown concerts in the traditional sense but he did win a piano competition (while living in California) when he was around 12....Alex was also trained.

    I was in high school when this came out, and was one of my choices when I signed up for Columbia House. I got it and the others on 8-track...yes...8-track in the 80's. I played this every day after school while doing chores. I'll Wait was my favorite on the album...great memories!

    Rest in peace, Eddie !!! there’s a guitarist out there, named Nuno Bettencourt of extreme he recently, and his band made a single called RISE BY EXTREME. He basically dedicatess the solo to him. This guy is probably the greatest guitarist alive right now.

    This was the second single off of "1984", released in 1984 (duh) that (I think) was their biggest album of all time. It spawned "Jump", their only #1 hit, as well as "Panama", which also hit the Top 40. The fourth single off the album was "Hot For Teacher", which.... great song, but I'd recommend the lyric video (as parents, you might find the actual video a little too edgy). And this is your 14th Van Halen reaction. though if you want to get technical, it's your 10th with DL Roth as the lead singer (the other four were Sammy).

      The album was slated to be number #1 on the charts by the end of a certain week in 1984.....and that certain week was the weekof the MJ infamous pepsi commerical/hair on fire incident happened and it gave a sudden 11th hour sales surge to his Thriller album and knocked VH's "1984" out of what would have been the #1 album in the country position. (Source: Michael Anthony revealed this while being interviewed by Howard Stern)

    ABSOLUTE BANGER!! This song is so unabashedly 80's with the synth, but it still rocks SO hard! David Lee Roth wasn't too pleased that Eddie was dabbling more and more into the keys, but a composer and creator has to do what they want to do, and this was the result of that experimentation!! This has LONG been one of my top Van Halen tracks - it flows perfectly. For me, it's the unsung hero of the 1984 album. Everyone knows the Jump, Panama, Hot For Teacher, but I'll Wait & House Of Pain are heavy and dark and just awesome!
    Thanks for starting my Tuesday off great! Cheers.
