Michael Anthony's vocals add so much to Van Halen's sound. His bass playing is of course the best, but he truly rounded out the vocals of both David Lee Roth and later Sammy Hagar.
Can't forget that synergy between Michael Anthony's Bass, Eddie's Guitar, and of course Alex Van Halen's drum prowess. Crazy that Eddie started off playing Drums and Alex playing Guitar, what a world....
The spotlight has always been on Eddie and DLR but Michael and Alex are an incredible rythym section. The one voice that always stands out as the Van Halen sound is bassist Michael Anthony
So. This is the first song on side one of the Van Halen first album. Back in 77'-78', this was the first thing everybody heard. Jaws dropped everywhere. Nobody had ever heard anything like it. In particular, that sound changed rock guitar forever.
Blown away? Not me. HUGE disappointment. What does it matter if the guitar playing is good, when the songs are sooooooooo boring? Lipstick on a pig. And guitar never interested me anyway.
I was 14 in 1978. Some friends and I were sitting in a car in the parking lot at the local grocery store on a Friday night. A carload of friends pulled up and asked us if we'd heard this new band Van Halen. They passed over the eight track and we plugged it in . This song started playing and rock music changed for us all. 🤯
Van Halen are rock gods and David Lee Roth had that deep soulful, perfect voice for hard rock music. Not to forget, was one of the most memorable front man, lead vocals ever. He peacocked around the stage, like Mick Jagger and had the hip action of Elvis, the gymnastics of a pro cheerleader and that solid voice, screeches and growls, like Janis Joplin almost, paired with the guitar...ahh, takes you back 👍👍🔥
The greatest guitarist and the greatest lead singer, made for the greatest band ever! Like you said, David Lee Roth was way more than just a singer...he was a true showman that brought the party!
The drummer is Eddie's brother Alex. The Bass player is Michael Anthony. He also does much of the backing vocals. He and Sammy Hagar are tight and still tour together as The Circle.
As I "mature" I have come to realize just how good these guys were. David Lee Roth is an extremely good & powerful singer, combined with that beat & riffs, it's really cool!
My first concert without my parents was Van Halen and I remember when they played this song everyone went wild in the stadium. I was about 14. David Lee Roth had so much charisma it was unreal. I’ve been a fan for 40 years and this still gives me goosebumps!
This is the first VH song that most of us heard back when the album first came out. Side 1 track 1. It was a great intro to what was to come, which was Eruption!
Yeah that opening siren leading into that thumping bass line then Eddie comes in. Our ears weren't prepared for that back then. Then Eruption came and just shattered everything I had known about guitar up until that point. Fair Warning is still my favorite Van Halen album but this is where it all started.
That was the world's introduction to Van Halen. RIP Eddie, you are greatly missed. Many more great ones to choose from, try "Unchained". For the softer side "Little Guitars" with the intro included.
..you said it Brother, GREATLY missed...I always thought "Hang em High "was overlooked....Enough can never be said about Eddie and his contributions and impact... never be another EVH...I still miss him
Still remember the first time I heard this!!!! Neighbour was having a house party - he had just bought itt, put it on the turntable - everyone went insane!! That night we were all introduced, to what would become one the best LP''s ever recorded.
I remember back in the seventies I was in a radio shack and a guy came in looking at stereos. He gave a salesman this song on eight track, the salesman put it in a good stereo and cranked it! The guy bought the whole system right there! LOL boy life was fun back then!
I like to hear stories like that. I'm remember playing this song for a girlfriend of mine at the time back in the early 80s. And all I remember is her singing the part Running With the Devil with a big smile and her dimples on the face while I cranked it up on my 6 by 9s in my 72 Vega hatchback.
Was never a fan of disco, so when this came out in 1979 it was like salvation from the long long years of tv dance shows , sequins, disco beat. It touched my soul
Back in 78 when this came out sitting around the gathering of friends taking bong hits partying in our daily routine this comes on the radio and everyone stops and looks at each other and asking Who is this??? Yeah buddy they were kicking ass from day one man. The 70's was such a great time to be a teenager living life. Outside tossing the Buzz bee back and fourth catching one at night with the glow in the dark frisbee/buzz bee we had. Burned up a lot of weed man but it was what we did then...✌️ The music was so good then nothing can compare with today's music if you want to call it music... ☮️
I love watching you two react to songs i grew up with! When you’ve heard them 15,000 times, you’re not really hearing them anymore. You always point out things i never consciously paid attention to. Very fun!
My brother found an 8-track of this on the side of the highway in Barstow, CA, in 1978. I was 16. He said "Check out this guitar player." I had never heard of the band before that, and it was life-changing...
You guys gotta come up with some kind of little desk toy like the flowers that wiggle if you put 'em next to a speaker. The Amber Chair Dance moving dancing thingy! She's so adorable, like watching a small child experience it for the first time. It's a compliment! So sweet and playful. Plus she has great reactions and intelligent feedback. Love how she expresses herself. So cool you love Van Halen! And Zep! It's good to see younger generation dig it like I did when it first came out (I'm 62). Lucky Man, Jay! You two are so fun! Thank You. God Bless You Both. And thank you for the smile I get with each video.

Like a lot of bands Michael Anthony's bassist & backing vocals are just more than holding down the bottom end Check out Everybody wants some & Women in love Michael is very underrated
Love Van Halen! Seen them twice ( '84 and '07) so happy to have seen Eddie(he was perfect!!) Michael Anthony was great on the bass and his background vocals are too and Alex Van Halen can play the heck out of the drums and then you have David Lee Roth, talk about not only an Awesome singer but an Amazing entertainer! He was always moving and connecting with the audience! Please do more from the early Van Halen..Keep On Rockin'
Now you're cooking, that song ripped out of our speakers when we first got the record Van Halen, in 1978. Had just seen them open for Black Sabbath, a volcanic introduction to this new, white Hendrix and his killer band. Iommi had to pull out the riffs of all time after Eddy blew us away! Try the Atomic Punk from the same album, it too is a killer track. Enjoy! 🎸
One of the best debut albums of all time. When this came out it was literally jaw dropping, starting with this and then rolling right into Eruption and once your brain has been adequately melted and your chin is on your chest - You Really Got Me, Aint Talkin Bout Love, Im the One.... I wont list them all but some albums are worth listening to beginning to end and this is definitely one of them. Cheers!
Their 1st song off their very first album. What a beginning. Can you see why they exploded in popularity in the late 70s? Every song off their first 2 albums was great!
This was the VERY FIRST Van Halen song I ever heard -- late at night, on our local college radio station. The opening riff was a revelation. When they were still an obscure unsigned band from Pasadena, Roth insisted on printing up flyers with their name on them -- even when they had no gigs booked. The others though he was crazy. But he was insistent -- wanting to keep their name out there. When they did start getting gigs, people recognized their name from the flyers -- so bigger crowds showed up. David Lee Roth's solo stuff is worth checking out... Just A Gigolo Sensible Shoes
In May of '78, while I was visiting the UK, I saw Black Sabbath play a concert in Sheffield. This "unknown" band from CA was the warm-up act - Van Halen. Ozzie Osborn went on to say that the new group had upstaged them! Eddie Van Halen was a gifted pianist, one of those natural talents who played by ear. He and his brother, Alex, were actually born in the Netherlands and went to the US when about 10 yrs old. The band played on until Eddie died a couple of years ago.
First song I ever heard from them; stopped my in my tracks. Called WRIF radio station, sat on hold for 20 minutes; they picked up said, “Van Halen” and hung up! Ahhh, the good ole days.
So glad I got to see them three times in concert; two with David Lee Roth, once with Sammy Hagar. I've met people from LA who said they saw them play at a backyard birthday party. The cool thing about growing up in a big city is sometimes you get introduced to great bands before they become famous--you discover them before the rest of the world.
Brings back great memories. Aside from Van Halen being my first concert, I first heard this on a friends car stereo in a Ford Courier pickup truck with just about the best car stereo of the day a Pioneer Super Tuner up at Lake Hollywood just below the Hollywood sign. About the same time as listening to Journey Wheel In the Sky and Styx Grand Illusion albums. What great times. So many great bands at one time and now very few and far between.
I was in high school when this album came out. I bought it instantly and played in the school parking lot. I can still remember everyone coming up asking who it was...absolutely loving it. A short time later I saw them up in Seattle at the Paramount theater for a buck! Yes one(1) dollar. They did not disappoint!. After the show, we stopped to get some Pizza down south on I-5. To our amazement the band was doing the same thing. We talked with them and had Pizza and beer...we were under age. but no one asked. :-) Such a great memory...such a great band. BTW, Eruption starts right after this song on the album...almost a sin to not play to two of them together...like Led Zeppelin...Heartbreaker and Living Loving maid...side two off LZ II.
This song is one of my all-time favorite screamers. DLR shrieking over the chorus sections is just the goddamn best; I love how much energy he just pours into it. It was the first song of their first album, and I feel like you can tell how hard they were working to sell their music at this point. Just going all out on every part of every song.
If you like heavy and tough listen to Kings X !!! Very underrated 3 man band with a very soulful singer! Listen to Dogman to start down there rabbit hole ! Goldiloxs love when the whole crowd sings it will give you Goosebumps!
You should listen to Van Halen's Dance the Night Away. It's from their next album and is more upbeat. Everything great about Van Halen is at its best in that song.
Michael Anthony was always the glue & the reason for much of their vocal integrity. Yes Dave was always the front man but as far as those memorable choruses, Michael held it all down when the chaos ensued.
This is the song that got it rollin for Van Halen .. The FM Album Rock station in my Town of Seattle threw this on and everyone was floored... No doubt my 8 track tape of this album got played into the ground...A classic!!
For most kids growing up in the 70’s this was our first introduction to VH and it blew our minds. Here in Oklahoma they were probably most boys favorite band up to 1985, and for some even later.
Alex Van Halen never gets much love for being a top drummer ever. This song really has a great rhythm section between Alex and bassist Michael Anthony.
This was one of those albums that for some reason I just bought when it was new, without ever having heard any of it or knowing anything about this band. It was a pretty cool experience to have this be the first song on there...
For lots of people, this was their intro to Van Halen, 1st song, 1st album. Kind of funny, since it's one of the calmer guitar songs on that first album, but still great playing and at the time totally unique tone. I first heard them on the radio, and it was the Eruption solo followed by You Really Got, someone just let the 2 tracks play on the radio. Unreal. My jaw hit the floor, and I wondered who the hell could even do this? Frank Marino was only name I could think of that maybe possibly could play like that. But of course it was Eddie and dawn of a new age.
First album I bought as a kid was Diver Down. Then I bought VH I and II etc. And I was 14 when 1984 came out. Just a fun top notch band. After Eddie died I spent time listening to the isolated guitar tracks. I appreciated him even more.
The great thing about that first album is that Eddie didn't feel the need to put a solo on every song. He was playing for the song and in this one he had a small guitar melody part, but no crazy solo where it isn't needed. VH also had the best background vocals.
Why is it that when 70s bands rocked harder in the 70s then they did in the 80s ,, Aerosmith ,, Queen Boston ,,Toto Van Helen Kiss You name em ,, The 70s were THE BOMB
David Lee Roth vocals EVH lead guitar Michael Anthony Bass guitar Alex VanHalen drums This was one of the first songs. In it you can hear the hunger Fun fact the band was originally called mammoth and EVH played drums while AVH played guitar.
Michael tragically never got the love that he most assuredly deserved. He was the secret weapon in Van Halen.
Michael is still with Sammy today playing that bass.
Their harmonies created an unmistakable sound.
Let's not forget that the backing vocals were both Michael AND Eddie, not just Mike alone. Eddie never gets props for his bk vocals.
Imagine getting the first Van Halen album in 1978, throwing it on, and this INTRO is the first thing you hear!!!!!!
Wife here..Van Halan are ROCK GODS!! NO DOUBT!!...The ad lib is Amazing Amber..Well said!!
The spotlight has always been on Eddie and DLR but Michael and Alex are an incredible rythym section. The one voice that always stands out as the Van Halen sound is bassist Michael Anthony
yes! Michael Anthony is the boss of that crew. He keeps them together.
Let’s also remember the Michael Anthony was/is a great background singer too.
That and Eddie/Michael were amazing harmonizers. Very underrated for their singing.
@@alexo5861 Oops, didn't see your comment when I posted a similar one. Totally agreed on Michael Anthony.

One of the often forgotten parts of Van Halen, Michael Anthony on bass. He does shine in this song.
His background vocals are pretty great too.

Eddie Van Halen’s legendary sound was dubbed the “brown sound”.
The "brown sound" was dubbed as Alex`s snare drum sound not, Eddie`s guitar sound.
Their 1st song off their very first album. What a beginning. Can you see why they exploded in popularity in the late 70s? Every song off their first 2 albums was great!
"Ice Cream Man" is a must (same album)
This was the VERY FIRST Van Halen song I ever heard -- late at night, on our local college radio station. The opening riff was a revelation.
When they were still an obscure unsigned band from Pasadena, Roth insisted on printing up flyers with their name on them -- even when they had no gigs booked. The others though he was crazy. But he was insistent -- wanting to keep their name out there. When they did start getting gigs, people recognized their name from the flyers -- so bigger crowds showed up.
David Lee Roth's solo stuff is worth checking out...
Just A Gigolo
Sensible Shoes
This song is the benchmark for every Van Halen song that came after it. It was their first original song to be released as a single.
This was my intro as a kid to Van Halen. This was the music that parents were scared of back in the day.
BTW, Eruption starts right after this song on the album...almost a sin to not play to two of them together...like Led Zeppelin...Heartbreaker and Living Loving maid...side two off LZ II.
ok man ... 'fess up -- the meeting VH in a pizza parlor ... fictional , no ? 😉
Van Halen was my first concert ever back in 1981. Rock on! Pretty sure this is my favorite Van Halen song.
I remember the first time I heard this. I was 22 when this came out and I was in a nightclub and this came on the P.A. extremely loud and I LOVED it!
HELL YEAH BABY !! VH is my childhood ! as a Teen I saw The MIGHTY VAN HALEN IN '78 '79 '80 '81 '82 "84
This song is one of my all-time favorite screamers. DLR shrieking over the chorus sections is just the goddamn best; I love how much energy he just pours into it. It was the first song of their first album, and I feel like you can tell how hard they were working to sell their music at this point. Just going all out on every part of every song.
I remember the first time my buddies and me heard this. Revolutionary! Back in the day it was a new sound.
Alex Van Halen is one of my all time favorite drummers.
First song on there 1st album. Love it. This is one of the finest rock albums of all times !!!!!!
Without question. The no. 1 VH song.
This sonog was the opening track on their debut album. It was the first thing you heard from Van Halen. Sets the tone for the entire album.
If you like heavy and tough listen to Kings X !!! Very underrated 3 man band with a very soulful singer! Listen to Dogman to start down there rabbit hole ! Goldiloxs love when the whole crowd sings it will give you Goosebumps!
Michael Anthony is the bass player and Alex Van Halen is the drummer.
Eddie and Michael have the most distinct harmonizing vocals ever. Dynamic duo!!
You should listen to Van Halen's Dance the Night Away. It's from their next album and is more upbeat. Everything great about Van Halen is at its best in that song.
Dance the night away is from Van Halen 2, released in 1979.
@@keithroberts4952 Yep. You're right. I corrected my comment. Thanks.
@@mst3ktemple421 no probs.
"Dance The Night Away" is a cool Van Halen song that doesn't have a big solo from Eddie but you will love it. It's a classic.
1981. Washington DC. 12TH row on the floor. My first concert! Blown away! Up close and personal! The video is a must see!❤
Love VH! Always my favorite in concert! Yes, true Alex Van Halen in drums and Michael Anthony’s bass and background vocals make the band what it is!
Way to get pumped up for a night of driving, hope everyone is having a good weekend
Drive safe Amigo.
For most kids growing up in the 70’s this was our first introduction to VH and it blew our minds. Here in Oklahoma they were probably most boys favorite band up to 1985, and for some even later.
Jay N Amber You would have CRAVED the 70s as much as i did ,, THE BEST Ten Years EVER
My fav Van Halen song, and for me it's all about the guitar. Close second, for it's equally awesome guitar riff is Ain't Talkin Bout Love.🎶💜
The solo on Ain’t Talking About Love is more simple as well, but man is it cool
This song and Ice Cream Man are my two favorite vocals by Dave.
Why is it that when 70s bands rocked harder in the 70s then they did in the 80s ,, Aerosmith ,, Queen Boston ,,Toto Van Helen Kiss You name em ,, The 70s were THE BOMB
David Lee Roth vocals
EVH lead guitar
Michael Anthony Bass guitar
Alex VanHalen drums
This was one of the first songs. In it you can hear the hunger
Fun fact the band was originally called mammoth and EVH played drums while AVH played guitar.
Remember a good friend calling me over to his truck after track practice and sticking in the first Van Halen album - was a mind-blowing experience!
