    the fact that these guys were probably 18-19 when they recorded this version is incredible

    If you even come back to this song, the album version is different, the mix sounds different, drum sounds, some lyrics and the vocals are more of an anguish singing than spoken word.

    Never heard of these guys, but this was pretty rad. I can definitely hear the post-punk element, especially in the vocals, but the music sounds pretty damn original. It has hints of Slint that we heard earlier in the week, but with more avant-garde touches that vaguely remind me of King Crimson. I also think this is a masterclass on how to build tension and drama over an ostinato, and that key change is like a gut punch because it's so unexpected and because it comes within the context of that repetition. It's certainly true it's not the most pleasant listen musically, but I think it makes up for that in nailing a tone of uneasiness, anxiety, tension, etc. Definitely very artsy, and has me very interested to hear more from them.

      The Slint comparison is definitely apt; in one of their other songs, they sarcastically refer to themselves as the "second-best Slint tribute act"

    The “stability” you’re looking for is on the album version. Kinda surprised you’d analyze this one over the album version. It’s definitely an attempt at making a musical version of anxiety in my opinion - based on Issac’s cryptic but always emotionally heavy lyrics.

      And I do believe it was intentional, as the lyrics are all about adequacy (or rather the frustration at the lack of it) and putting up fronts (sunglasses) as a source of false confidence. And yes, the lyrical themes shift with the music. As it transitions, that’s when the sunglasses are put on and the protagonist becomes more comfortable with himself. As the second passage becomes more and more chaotic, so too the protagonist’s front unravels and he loses it.

    I will suggest track called Plague of Butterflies by Swallow the Sun. It's a melodic doom metal epic and imo one of their most underrated tracks because it was released as an EP (like Dream Theater's A Change of Seasons for example) and that's why many have missed it.

    Is this post punk? Didn't post punk start in the late 70s? This is from, I think from research, 2019. It may have post punk ideas, but it doesn't belong to the zeitgeist. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
    BTW, I posted some links to informative articles about post punk in the Talking Heads reaction, but the post appears to have disappeared. (I must have offended the TH-cam bot.)
    And I'm coming back to say I checked out your blocked video reaction to King Crimson's "Fracture". I love everything KC, but wish your random number generator had picked "Starless". Iconic. One of the first bands I saw live, sitting up in the gods, with Robert at the mellotron. I was blown away. I also saw them play live with Jamie Muir on percussion. That was some experience!

      @jonathanhenderson9422 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's certainly true that post-punk started in the 80s, but I would definitely say that post-punk is still going, basically that lineage of bands originally influenced by punk but who are experimenting with other genres, sounds, styles, etc. Though unrelated, I agree with you about King Crimson. My pick actually would've been Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part 1, though Starless is fantastic too. Fracture is mostly just terrifying if you're a guitarist trying to play it.
